It's nearly time and I'm planning my escape! We're in Oakville so the options are the I75 or I79(the faster route).
We've done the drive before. We usually leave Thursday, right after the kids get home from school, and drive for 4 or 5 hours before stopping for the night. Depending on the weather, we've ended up just into Pennsylvania, or sometimes just north of Pittsburgh. The next morning we head out right after breakfast - on the road by 8 - and drive and drive and drive stopping for the night as soon as we're worn out. Waking up Saturday morning - stopping at IHOP along the way for brunch - and then arriving at our magical place early afternoon.
Anyone else do the drive? What route do you like? What time do you leave? How do you help pass the time and keep yourselves alert and rested along the way?

I have another thread going where people kindly suggested a route for us, but we too are leaving Thursday night. I'm about to book a hotel in Wilkes-Barre PA, then I think we are going to try and get to Walterboro SC on Friday, landing at our hotel near WDW late Saturday afternoon. dS2 already wants to check out the Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney, but I think it's just an excuse to play with Lego after a long car ride :)
Our plan for entertainment involves a few games (magnetic snakes and ladders, magnetic battleship, hangman), some story cubes we got for Christmas to make up stories along the way, and I think I'm going to set up some roadside bingo cards. Otherwise the iPad will be loaded with movies and the DS will be packed with games. If we get desperate, the boys take over the maps and gps ;)

You must be on the Dream right after us! We're doing the 4 night leaving on Sunday morning :0)
We're not booking our rooms enroute ahead of time. (not quite yet anyways) We've been stuck in bad weather before so I'm holding off until I see the weather reports.
I'm pulling out all the travel games I can find. My kids are old enough to keep themselves occupied with their video games and movies but - I like to keep myself busy with games we can all play. We played the license plate game on our last trip and found nearly all the states - I think we were only missing a couple and believe it or not - we found Hawaii!
I'm looking forward to the drive. It's a big part of the adventure for us!

Canuck traveller, Are you on the Dream march 7th? we are and I'm from Hull but now live just across the river from renfrew/Pembroke.

Hi,
we'll be driving:drive:, leaving March 1st, we only have a week so we will be going strait.
Since we are 3 drivers it will be OK, We'll be at the Pop Century early evening on March 2nd. We are getting married on the 1st, then it is our Disneymoon with the kids. Can't wait ;)
To pass time we mostly watch movies, the kids have their electronic stuff. I still prepare surprise bags, to give them trhought the ride, even if they are older now 16 and 19, it is always a succes!!!

Nope, I think we sail Mar 14. We decided to end the trip with the cruise :)
I know Renfrew, I cover Lanark county for work!

I hope I get the week off. I just got a job with the school board and am working with the full day kindergarten program. If we don't enough kids enrolled for March break then we will close ...we were closed for christmas break so it is looking good. we will most likely drive as it will be last minute. I think we will leave Friday night around 6pm...the plan is to drive straight through. My mom might come along so that would give us three drivers. If we get too tired and the kids are driving us crazy we will stop for a hotel. We drove last march break on the way home when Direct Air went bankrupt. The drive wasn't bad at all. We ended up staying in a gross hotel - so I rather just drive and get to Florida. The best part of the drive is watching the snow disappear....
