Ketchup Mickey Heads- it is the little details that impress.:rotfl:
135_3596.jpg

We just returned from a wonderful first trip on the Disney Magic Western, and I like so many would have been lost with out all the wonderful information I learned on these boards.:thumbsup2

Last winter we went to Disney World, I realized that I need to find a vacation that I can take my girls on alone . I had done a lot of research on the DIS boards for that trip but I had never ventured onto the cruise section until I returned. I think after about an hour on the boards I realized that I had found a perfect vacation. :surfweb:

I booked the cruise through Fairy Tale Destinations and they were amazing, I made lots of changes and there was not a single thing done incorrectly, and they were all handled immediately. I wanted to book with a Canadian TA and I was very glad that I did.:yay:

I originally booked at CAT 9 for March 8 Western, a couple weeks after booking my oldest says we need to go to the Magic Kingdom if we are going to be in Orlando. Friday was a PD day for the kids so I decided to take them out of school on the Thursday and we would spend Friday at the Magic Kingdom. So to keep within my budget I downgraded to a Category 12 and booked the Polynesian. We had a good time at the Magic Kingdom, but I realized by kids much prefer the pools to the parks, so I think I will be making solo trips to the parks and taking the kids on cruises.

I have always wanted to stay at the Polynesian and it was beautiful. We got upgraded from garden view room to one with a perfect view of the Castle, which was :wizard: great as Friday night it started to rain and my kids did not want to stay in the park in the rain, so we headed back to the room and had a perfect view of the fireworks from our dry room while it poured out.

135_3571.jpg

Saturday arrived sunny ,cold and windy, but we were ready to get on the ship We spent the morning looking for Disney Crocs, none of the shoes I brought for the my girls were fitting them very well, :rolleyes1 we found one pair at the Polynesian but we had to go to the Grand Floridian and the then to the Contemporary to find the smaller pair. In the process my girls got to ride up front of the Monorail which was a big hit.

We took the DCL bus and it picked us up at noon and we were on the ship by 1:30. It all seems a blur to me now, I remember going up the escalators and the terminal was pretty much empty, we took a quick look at the model of the ships, and then checked in the kids for the kids club, I am sure that this took no longer than 10 minutes and then before you know it we were on the ship. Christiaan was the cruise director on this cruise and I think he was the first person we saw and we were always running into him, he was everywhere. We went to our room to drop things off.

We were very lucky with upgrades on this trip, about 2 weeks prior we got our room number and we were upgraded to that original category 9 I had booked. :wizard: It was a great room 2nd level midship starboard side and Air the room attendant was wonderful and did an amazing job of keeping the room clean. It was great having a window as we ended up spending more time in the room than I thought we would have. I don’t think I will be able to sail without a window, so who ever those mysterious room assigner up graders are your upgrading us has paid off .:rotfl2:

After dropping our things off we headed up to the Topsiders for lunch, it was not terribly busy and we were able to find a table. It was windy and cold up top but the girls wanted to go for a swim, so they headed into the kids pool right after lunch. My oldest loved the slide, but this was the only time during the whole cruise that they made it in the pool when the slide was open. We were having a DIS meet at 3:00 so it was short swim, luckily it was cold so it was not that much of a chore to get the kids out of the pool.

We did not have a very active pre cruise meet thread so I was expecting no one to show up for the meet, but there was about 10 people there, we just said a quick hello and then headed off to get ready for the life boat drill, that was another one of these things that is a blur and I am glad nothing serious every happened as I am sure I could not remember anything they told us.:scared1:

We headed up to deck 9 and we must have been late as the place was packed, so we headed up to deck 10 and were able to find a spot on some stacked lounge chairs at the back with a perfect view of the stage,
135_3593.jpg

the girls had a great time.

They have always gone to YMCA daycares so they were most excited when YMCA came on, I think they danced that dance before as they were pros at it.

We had main sitting and ended up with dinner at 5:30, our first night was in Lumiers. My daughters had been looking forward to meeting lots of kids and the look of disappointment when we arrived at our table with a small girl maybe 1 and 4 adults was very noticeable,:scared: and when they were both not able to sit on either side of me we had a recipe for disaster:sad2:

We lasted 2 nights at that table , and on the third day at lunch we had our waitress for lunch I mentioned that we would not be making it for dinner, we got to talking and she was most surprised that we were not with the other family, and I think she felt bad as they had been pretty much ignoring us, as they felt they were addressing the head of the family who they assumed to be speaking for the whole table.

I do not remember much from those first 2 dinners, except for the Ketchup Mickey heads. Ketchup is a must for just about all meals in our house so when ketchup was requested I could not figure out what the waitress was doing with it  and then she presented this very original Mickey Head. We are always on the lookout for Mickey Heads so the girls were impressed and I thought what attention to detail, to train your staff to do something so simply but so in line with your companies product.

It was actually the only quick dinner we had, I think we were done by 6:40, the kids were eager to check out the kids club, so were headed up there. I was under the impression that you needed to stay with the kids on the first night, but that was not so, DD 1 wanted to stay alone so she stayed, and DD2 and I headed out to do some exploring. I think Ratatouiee was playing in the theater and we watched that for a bit. We off course ran into some characters and it was the start of DD2 getting her picture taken:love: , I could not get her away from the Characters ,and DD1 never wanted to get her picture taken:rolleyes: .

We went to check on DD1 and she was getting her face painted so now DD2 wants to stay. I check her in and head off to explore on my own. I headed up to deck 9 to work my way done, it was cold and windy so it was pretty quiet on the top decks. It had been a long day so about 8:30 I went to get the girls and they were ready to go.

Towel animals,
136_3637.jpg

how can something so simple bring such joy and excitement to little kids, but returning in the evening to see what would be left become one of the many highlights. This evening there was a crab waiting for us.

I decided that the best sleeping arrangements would be for the girls to sleep on the bed split into twin beds and I would sleep on the couch.
136_3603.jpg

The beds are so comfortable it was tempting to put one of the girls on the couch but if I did that I would have to go to sleep when the girls did and I was looking forward to staying up and reading something I never get to do at home. :cool1:

Day 1 on the cruise had been great and I could not help wonder how people just book a vacation and go, after all the research I had done I felt like I was going somewhere I had been before and how overwhelming it must be to people who just go, the Disney Magic is just like a little town

Yeah! :yay: You're doing a report too! Can't wait to read more. Sounds great so far! :thumbsup2

Great trip repot so far -- waiting to read more. :)

Wendy,

I am sure I will not be as entertaining as yours or have as great of pictures.:lmao:

What type of camera do you have, my husband is looking for a new one?

Dweaver, Thanks for reading, I know I got so much from other reports that I really felt I needed to join the club.

Lisa

Day 2 we woke up to another cold and windy day.:goodvibes

We headed up to Topsiders for breakfast and then girls were heading to the club to make flubber. I was hoping to get some time in the adult pool but it was too cold, so I just took a walk around checking out the ship.

Getting their hair braided was the one thing the girls had to do on the cruise and they had appointments for 11:30.:cool1: They both wanted to get the full braids but I knew there was no way they would sit for 2 hours so they just got the top braided, it looks great, and they will be most sad to take it out. Lilo and Stitch were on stage while the girls got their hair braided.
136_3607.jpg

We had pizza for lunch and then we headed back to the room. I was hoping to get into Key West to look around, but the girls did not want to do that. We do not get the Disney Channel in Ontario and last trip to Disney World the girls made that transition from PlayHouse shows to the Disney Channel so it was a treat for them to watch back to back Disney shows. The girls watched TV for a while and I watched the coming and goings on the dock. We were on the starboard side of the ship and we had a great view of Key West. I am falling under the Disney upgrade gods spell and can tell that I will not be booking any inside rooms in the near future. It was really nice to have a window as my girls like to take a leisurely pace, so they could lounge around and I could watch the world go by.:cool2:

We did head up to the pool eventually , and this time the family pool was the destination. This was the one place I failed on the research,:sad1: I never realized that the family pool is 4 feet deep, not a problem for my older daughter as she is a good swimmer, but my youngest is not as confident in the water and she is only 4 feet tall, so that means I had to go in the pool with her. I am a warm weather swimmer , luckily nothing good was playing on the big screen or I would have had a battle getting them out. It was cold, and windy so it was a short swim.

DD1 was itching to get back into the clubs to make instruments. DD2 is a mommy’s girl and it did not take her long to figure out that her sister loved the clubs and that she could get mommy to herself by not going to the clubs, so DD2 and I headed off to look at some pictures and have a walk around Deck 4. I am not a big collector of things so I thought I would only buy 1 or 2 pictures the whole cruise, but they are so nice with all the boarders I ended up buying a lot more and I am glad I did, because mine are no where near as nice.:thumbsup2

Tonight was dinner in Animator’s Pallet, I was hoping to get to the table first so that the girls could at least sit on either side of me, but it did not work out and this dinner was worse than the first because of the table location I could not even move the girls chairs to be close to me.:scared: Once the girls finished eating we left, the room was just changing colors so we watched from the entrance of the restaurant, but I think I was too busy trying to keep the girls from bursting into tears that I missed something. I decided then that we would be better eating a large lunch and then having pizza or dinner at Topsiders.

Tonight was the PJ party in the kids club so it was back to the club. The girls had a great time, DD1 is a pretty serious child so it was fun to watch her have so much fun and get into the dancing. I headed up to Topsiders for dessert as I had missed mine, It was so peaceful walking up on the top deck. Some artwork but I am not sure from where, maybe the main staircase?
136_3620.jpg

When we returned to the room, there was another wonderful animal, with DD2's crownprincess: , I think it was a rabbit.

The girls claimed they were hungry so we ordered room service. I work in the hotel industry so we stay in hotels a lot, and they love to order room service, so it was a real treat, only having to pay a tip, and not the crazy hotel prices for room service It would became a nightly habit to order fruit bowls, milk and raisin cookies. Once again the girls are out like a light and I get to read, life is good.:cloud9:

Happy Easter

Lisa

Lisa

Lisa,

My mother-in-law bought us a new digital camera for Christmas. It's an Olympus 560UZ. It has an 18X zoom which came in very handy. I was very happy with the pictures. Not so happy with the prints, but that's another story.

Have your DH check out the photography DIS board, they have some good advice for shopping for cameras.

Sorry to hear about your dinner experience. We were very lucky with ours. Sounds like you made the most of it. I wish we had made time to order room service. We were never in our room long enough! ;)

Can't wait for more report.

This is the first time I've seen a picture with the bed rails / divided...

Can't wait to read more about your adventures!

I was expecting dinner to be a challenge, and it was not that terrible. I should have had dinner at Topsiders, but the girls always wanted to go to the restuarants.

This is the first time I've seen a picture with the bed rails / divided...

No way would anyone got sleep if they slept together. If I had been smart I would have moved one of the beds against the wall, and moved the end table to the middle, but I never thought of that till I got home.

Day 3 was a sea day. Before the trip I had prepared DD2 that she would have to go to the club alone so I could spend time alone with each of my daughters and this was the day.:scared1:

Every night we would eat our room service snack and pour over the next days’ navigator, so the plan for Day 3 was DD7 would go to the club in the morning and DD5 in the afternoon. I think we had breakfast in Lumieres, my kids are pretty picky eaters but they do enjoy going for breakfast so we had a nice breakfast. We drop DD7 off at the clubs and DD5 and I head to see Enchanted. I love this movie and have seen it 3 times but I was looking forward to seeing it again. We got out drinks up on deck 9 and then went to the theater. DD5 has talked non stop since she was 12 months old, so I try and get seats on the end away from everyone else, and she also loves to dance around to the Enchanted sound track. During that great scene in Central Park where they are dancing around DD5 goes into the stairs to dance around, Snow White appears and she stops to say hello, and DD5:cloud9: is in heaven, once again a little thing done that leaves a huge impression. After the movie we had lunch in Parrot Cay, I loved this restaurant and our server Leo ended up being our dinner server.

It is now the moment of truth where I have to drop off DD2 at the clubs alone,:scared1: she is not terrible thrilled with the idea and I explain the to staff that there may be a problem and to page if necessary, but I was really hoping to spend the afternoon with DD7. The club is doing a Lilo dance party so I leave with my fingers crossed. DD7and DD5 are opposites on just about everything, and when we went to Disney World last winter, we ran into problems with DD7 loving the live shows and DD5 being terrified which caused us to leave, so DD7 and I were looking forward to the Golden Mickeys without DD5. The show was great and DD7 really enjoyed it, she even got interviewed before we went in but she was too shy to say anything. We went to the afternoon show and it was not terribly busy, I can’t imagine my girls sitting through the shows at night so it was great to be able to go in the afternoon.

When the show was done we headed out to play shuffleboard, DD7 loved that also and could have played for hours.

We then went on a search to find the big port hole windows that everyone has pictures of, I had no idea where they were, but we found some down on the Beat street and this became the favorite hangout, in my daughters mind it was a great place to meet friends and play with their Webkinz.

It was getting close to dinner, and since we were moved to another table we decided to give it a try, we went to the club and picked up DD5, she had a great time, so we were all happy. We headed back to the room to change , and there is a package for DD5 on the fish extender ,the staff member who had checked DD5 into the club sent her an award, wow another small token that leaves a huge impression.

Dinner I am happy to say was a much better experience, we were at a large table with a family with 2 kids the same age, and best of all the girls were able to sit with me. I am so glad that I spoke up and once again DCL solved a problem. We were in Animator Pallet for dinner this evening.

Tonight we returned to the room and there was no towel animal on the bed, my daughters were in shock and could not believe their bad luck, I wish I had a camera to take a picture then and also a minute later when they discovered a monkey hanging on the divider curtain, they had to run and thank Air, as they were so excited about it.

Of course they are hungry again and the traditional room service is ordered. The girls fall asleep after another great day. DD2 wakes up at 7:30 everyday like clock work, so I am trying hard to get them to sleep close to normal bed time to avoid taking home 2 exhausted girls, which I know my husband will not appreciate.

I love your trip report!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is wonderful. I can't wait to read more. :goodvibes

What a great day! My DD was thrilled to see your DD1 being interviewed on the red carpet.

Glad to see that DCL got your dining arrangements changed so that you could sit with your kids. :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the rest of your trip report. :)

So glad you got to sit with your children at dinner!
I am a little confused as to how this actually happened? If I had been on your table, I would surely have suggested all move around a seat or two so that you could be together?
Great trip report, can't wait for more.
Reminded me of some happy experiences some year ago when me and DS (then 8yrs or so, now 27yrs :scared1: ) holidayed on our own:goodvibes

Thank you for reading, I enjoy reading everyone's reports, so I am glad to pass it on, and it is a great way to keep the Disney high going.:goodvibes

What a great day! My DD was thrilled to see your DD1 being interviewed on the red carpet.

I am sure she was pretty shell shocked, there were some teens who were too afraid to do it, and she could not figure out why, but then they started asking questions and she did not know what to say.

Glad to see that DCL got your dining arrangements changed so that you could sit with your kids. :thumbsup2 Looking forward to the rest of your trip report. :)

I found DCL to be very helpful, and the server truly felt bad when she realized we were not travelling with the other family. :thumbsup2

 I do not think the other family realized what was happening.

Travelling with the girls alone was a real treat. My husband stays home with the girls and I work full time so I get very little time with the girls alone, so it was fun, and something we will always remember.

Day 4

It is day 4  already and we wake up to the ship getting close to Grand Cayman.
136_3640.jpg

The last time we had been to the ocean, my girls got one mouth full of salt water and that was it, so I did not want to book any excursions, the plan was to have a leisurely breakfast and then take a taxi to Seven Mile beach to test out the ocean.

We had breakfast in Parrot Cay and we had a window seat and were able to watch all the people tender off the other ships. Parrot Cay was great for breakfast:lovestruc

We went up to deck 4 for some shuffleboard and then once they gave the announcement for open boarding on the tender we headed out.

We had no problem finding a taxi, like everyone says they do wait till the bus is full before heading out, but it was not too long. I guess there are 3 stops along the beach you can get out, we got out at the first one Royal Palms, and the cost was $4. per person.

The beach was beautiful and the girls liked the ocean:cheer2: We spent the morning swimming and playing in the sand. The washrooms are clean and there are even showeres to wash the sand off.

We had a nice lunch at the restaurant right there, what a great view. :thumbsup2

Around 2:00 we decided to head back, make sure you leave lots of time to get back, once again they wait for the bus to fill up, there were some people in the first bus that had only 15 minutes to get back and they were starting to panic. Another taxi came up and we all moved to that one. Traffic is crazy in the afternoon so it does take much longer to get back.

I heard the beach further up is nicer, but I wanted to be at the closer one in case the girls hated the beach. We spent some time shopping on the pier, and then we headed back to the room to shower off some of that sand and watch Lilo and Stitch. I think between the resort and ship the girls watched parts of this movie 5 times and not once did we get a picture with Lilo and Stitch.:sad1:

I really don’t remember this afternoon and wow, it must have been the only time we were moving fast, as DD7 must have gone to the kids club, as DD5and I went to see Twice Charmed. We ran into Disneyfaninaz and joined us for the show. It was another great show and DD5 who has never sat through a whole live show without getting terrified really enjoyed it.:thumbsup2

I admit dinners were the most stressful time of the cruise and I do not remember much I think DD7 stayed in the clubs for dinner this evening, I do know DD7 had the hamburger every evening and DD5 pretty much went for the pizza. The kids selections were not great in my opinion, and the meals were getting slower and slower, this evening I ended up going back to the room to finish dinner, as DD5 was finished:eek: (could not sit still any longer finshed) and I had not gotten dinner yet. Our server was great about sending the meal to the room, but this introduced another option to the evening room service ritual, DD5 had not had dessert so with my meal came DD5 Mickey bar, well when DD7 saw the remainders of a Mickey Bar she had to have one.

DD7 had become friends with Disneyfaninaz's DD and they got into the routine of meeting up at 7:30 in the porthole windows by The Backstreet to sit and chat. DD7 does not usually make friends quickly, so she really enjoyed this :cool1: , at one point the were penning the next best seller :goodvibes I think it so cute to watch little girls chat, they grow up so fast and the things they talk about.:rolleyes1

We then headed back to the room for the nightly room service snack of fruit and the new addition of Mickey bars. I guess there were some issues with the kids club dinner at Topsiders and DD7 claims she never got dessert because some of the kids had to go to the washroom, so they had to leave before she was finished. Unfortunately room service was not reliable this evening and did not show up, I had called once about an hour after ordering and they said they were very busy but it was on the way, but it did not show up,:sad1: luckily DD5 fell asleep, but DD7 was determined to wait for that Mickey bar, she did eventually fall asleep.

Great TR. Sounds like you and your girls are having an awesome time.

Sounds like another great day with your DDs. I wish we had gotten away from the port a little and seen some of the beautiful beaches of Grand Cayman. Oh well, there's always next time! :rolleyes1

Anyway, I agree. It was a lot of fun watching our DDs chat and play.

really enjoying your trip report. sorry the dining didn't work well in the beginning. glad you had it changed. nice to hear you had some quality alone time with DDs.:thumbsup2

Day 5, the days are getting nicer and nicer and we woke up to a beautiful warm day in Cozumel, we had a great view of the harbor and we could see all the people heading out on the pirate ships.
136_3652.jpg

We headed to Parrot Cay for another great breakfast, it was such a fun place and we always got great servers for breakfast.:lovestruc

Today was the only excursion that I booked. DD7 loved to read trip reports with me and look at all the pictures, prior to the trip and any time she saw the Dolphin pictures she got all excited, that is what she wanted to do. I will just cut and paste the review I posted on Dolpinairs., it was a great day and I wish I had waited for the pictures.

We just returned from the Western 03/08 and I wanted to post a review of the Dolphinaris excursion as there seems to be so little information on this Dolphin excursion. I was traveling alone with my 2 young daughters 5 and 7, and I was getting conflicting reports on if I would be able to take both children at Dolphin Discovery so I was glad when DCL added the Dolphinaris excursions. Dolphinaris has a kids excursion where they go alone without an adult, the adult does have to be an observer, I think the cost through DCL was $105 per child and $25 for the adult, so it was much cheaper than Dolphin Discovey, and I knew there would be no issue of getting there and being told I needed an adult for each child. :thumbsup2

We meet at 11:55 and where put in a taxi for a short maximum 5 minute cab ride to Dolphinaris. The facilities are brand new and very clean.

Once we got there, everyone was broken into groups and given life jackets. I overheard some of the parents say that the trainer was concerned that he had too many kids on this day, that he usually had 6 but on this day there was 18, I am not sure if I believe the 6, but 18 did seem high.

The kids were taken to the pool and what I really liked was that the area they were on in the pool was a cement platform with water about 2 ½ feet deep, that did not move., so I was not worried about my daughters being there by themselves. The observers were overlooking this area about 50 feet away.
136_3658.jpg

The kids spent 1 hour in the water with the Dolphins, there were 3 Dolphins in the pool and they did all kinds of tricks and races. All the kids who wanted to get a kiss and also to shake hands with the Dolphin got to do that, while the one training was taking each child to a Dolphin, another trainer on the other side was doing tricks with another Dolphin to entertain the kids.
136_3659.jpg

My oldest daughter loved it and did not want to get out, my 5 year old did not want to touch the Dolphins, but she stayed in the water the whole time and seemed to be having fun. All the other kids were having fun and I think only 1 got out about 45 minutes into the hour. When the kids left they were given a small plush Dolphin that is the favorite memento of the trip.

There was a small area that you could go in and swim after but we did not stop there. The change areas were clean and towel and locker rentals were available for $3.00. There is a restaurant bar area but we did not eat there.

When I booked through DCL, it said the excursion was 45 minutes in the pool and 1 hour total, but it ended up taking us almost 4 hours, so that was the one down side, luckily I had packed some snacks with us. The kids got in the pool from 1:30-2:30 and then by the time we got back to the port it was 3:30 and then we did some shopping at the mall outside the port.

When leaving we did have to ask for a taxi voucher for the return but there was no issue in them giving it to us. We never got the pictures as they said it was going to be another 15 minutes and there is no way the girls would wait patiently.

After getting back on the ship we ordered room service again, the girls had PB&J sandwiches, the fruit bowl and the missing Mickey bars from the previous evening. It would have been nice to have a 6:00 dinner seating as 5:30 we always seemed to be rushing to get to there in time. I was hoping to get a nap in today, as it was the Pirates night but no such luck which was not a good thing, as you will see later.

I had brought the girls pirate costumes, so they got dressed up and we headed to dinner.pirate: DD2 loved getting her picture taken so we stopped for some with Pirate Mickey and Pirate Chip and Dale pictures, we ran into disneyfaninaz, so the girls all got their picture taken, and a date was set to meet up to see College Road Trip, We were really late for dinner, which was not a problem as everyone seemed to be late this day, and dinner was really slow. I had brought some LittlePetshop toys today, so we made it through dinner.

After dinner we played some shuffleboard before going to the movie. I figured there was no way DD5 would sit through the movie, but she loved it and giggled through the whole thing, what a great family movie, we do not go to movies much at home, so they were a real treat.

We stopped by the room to change out of the costumes as the girls were too hot, and DD7 fell in love with the towel animal, an elephant.

I could go to DisneyWorld and never go to the parks as long as I could see the fireworks, I love Fireworks and it was the one thing I was looking forward to. Well combined with the late night for DD7 the previous night and no nap today I was doomed to miss the fireworks, we lasted about 15 minutes into the show and I knew there was no way we were going to make it, DD5 was pretty much asleep sitting up and DD7 about not being able to find disneyfaninaz DD, so I admitted defeat and we headed to the room. Being on the starboard side I was able to see the fireworks from the room, but it was not the same, but now I have to come back, and I will not miss them next time.

DD7 still talks about the Dolpins and it was one of the highlights for her, it was another great day.
