March 2012: The Year I Almost Survived Spring Break

The DH story... Nothing else to say really...that sucked!

I Popeye and Olive Oil!!! I probably would have made a complete fool of myself over them! I cannot tell you how many times my brother and I watched the Robin Williams Popeye movie when we were kids! That movie was so corny, and cheesy, and goofy, and EPIC!!!!!!

The Robin Williams Popeye movie came on a few weeks before we left. I recorded it and watched it several times (the kids couldn't stay focused). I loved that movie! DH said it was horrible, one of the worst movies ever made. He just doesn't have good taste.

I wish I could have gotten to interact with the characters. By that point, I was tired, cranky, and not feeling 100% myself. So I was just a photographer-mom. But ... there's next year!

I want to go back for a moment and state some things I missed in my last post that I just noticed in my notes:

DS absolutely LOVED Betty.

The kids got DH back at abandoning us at The Hulk on the "tea cups". They tried to spin as fast as they could -- DH said never again will he ride tea cups.

We get back to the resort, clean up a bit, and then lounge around until it's time to head over to ...

The Boardwalk!

We checked in and was told it would be a 15-25 minute wait. Really? Hmm ... okay. So I took some pictures of the lobby. Most came our horrible ... but I did find this little cutie!

Our wait was right about 20 minutes. I don't quite understand having to wait when there are so many empty tables. Seriously. Anyone know why they make guests wait when there's TONS of empty tables?

I was thirsty and really wanting something tasty, so I ordered a Mega-Berry Smoothie. (So did DH.)

Our server brought a chef out to talk to DD about her milk allergy. She really wanted the Fisherman's Stew and he said he could accommodate her allergy -- but first made sure she really wanted it. He was worried she wouldn't like it, it would be too spicy for her, and would ... well, gross her out. She insisted.

So our server came back with some bread and two types of olive oils. She said they had vastly different flavors (we couldn't tell the difference AT ALL).

I only ate one slice of bread, my tummy still wasn't 100% settled from earlier.

For dinner, I attempted to enjoy:
Wood-grilled Rib-Eye Steak with fresh Herb Saltsa, (broccoli), and Kouzzina Potatoes

What kind of broccoli is that? It was ... different. VERY delicious, and I wanted MORE. I just hadn't seen broccoli that looked like this before. I was used to short stems, not long and slender ones. The herb saltsa ... yuck! I scraped it off. I did try it, I tried it alone and with the steak, but didn't like it at all. The potatoes were just "okay". Not bad, but not great. Kind of dry. Maybe if I had some butter to dip them in, I would have enjoyed them more. The steak was cooked well, but I really hate the taste of "burnt" from the grill. I ate all of the broccoli and steak, but did not finish the potatoes or the saltsa.

DD decided to enjoy:
Fisherman's Stew -- scallops, fish, shellfish, fennel, grilled bread, and ouzo butter

I think the chef left the butter out of hers, if I'm not mistaken. She didn't eat the bread (it was laying on a napkin on the table and not shown). That little bugger ate every bite of that. I was SHOCKED! She said it was very good!

DS enjoyed the kid's Mac 'n Cheese with green beans (and chicken noodle soup).

I tried his soup and it was SO GOOD. It really hit the spot, and I wished I had a bowl of it. He loved the mac 'n cheese, but has never been a huge fan of green beans.

DH ordered:
Slow-cooked Lamb Shank served with oven-baked Gigantes Beans and Lamb Jus

That's lamb sitting on top of beans. Those beans were huge! (And good.) DH cleaned his plate. I tried the lamb, and it was pretty good -- better than my Rib-Eye!

For dessert, DD enjoyed a cup of fruit (sorry, didn't snap a picture). I was ready to go ... I was tired and full and cranky, and just not feeling like myself. But since they were going to bring me something anyway, I ordered the Chocolate Budino Cake:

I can't rate this very fair ... because I was starting to really feel crummy and wanted to lay down. I didn't like it ... but I can't say that it wasn't because I just didn't want it. DS enjoyed the chocolate candy piece (that has Kouzzina written on it). He actually snatched it off my plate when I wasn't looking. I went to take a bite of it and it was just gone. The chocolate on his face gave him away. I know I didn't care for the cream (or whatever it was) behind the chocolate piece. I will say I felt the cake was average, but not very chocolatey like I imagined. I would definitely try this again ... one day when I'm not feeling so bad. lol

DH ordered the Galaktobouriko (Semolina Custard in baked Phyllo dough served with Greek spoon sweets).

He says: The pistachio "ice cream" was very good, but the rest was just okay. It was very, very chewy. It had a real earthy (woodsy) taste to it. It was like it was made out of whole grains and honey ... off the forest floor.

I wrote word, for word, what he just said. So those are his words. He would recommend it, but only if the person loves bread, pistachio, and honey. He's more of a fruit-person, so he'd prefer a different dessert if possible.

After dinner, I looked around for Sheila as we walked back to the car.

No sign of her, and the lady on the scooter wasn't too thrilled with me jumping on her ...

We got back to the room and started to get ready for bed. I asked the kids to show off their wands!

DS's Ivy wand:

I told him to hold it like he was going to cast a spell. This is what he came up with:

Then DD needed to show off her Elder wand:

Then it was shower and jammy time.

We all curled up in bed ... it was ... hmm ... 9:30? We had to get up early for RD tomorrow! It was morning EMH ... and I wanted to be there for it!

Just as soon as I started to doze off ....

The whole room began to spin wildly. I pushed myself up and wasn't quite sure if I could even get out of bed, let alone, make a dash for the restroom. (I will not go into great detail on what follows.)

I stumble to the restroom. After awhile, I think I'm feeling a bit better, so I try to climb back in bed. That wasn't happening and I almost didn't make it back to the restroom (I did, but it was close).

Around midnight, I woke DH up. I was so sick, I was VERY dehydrated, and I was in a TON of pain (my sides, plus cramps). DH calls our insurance company to see if there's anyone nearby that could help us. They give us a number for a 24 hour Urgent Care center. They were closed. Seriously? They had a nurse on call (or something -- because someone answered the phone). Whoever it was asked for me to come to the phone. So DH asks for me to come talk to them. I couldn't leave the restroom. DH relays the message and they tell him to call 911.

DH comes and sits on the floor in front of the sinks and asks what I wanted him to do. I didn't know, I was sick, and scared (I still want my mommy when I get sick -- but she was a million miles away). DH sat there for a minute and then went to the phone and pressed the 911 button on the phone. I heard him talking to someone and then a bit later, answering the door.

The paramedics call for me to come out of the bathroom. I'm in jammies (but decent) and stumble towards the first bed, where I collapse on the floor (I'm awake and aware, but just couldn't move anymore). DH and the paramedic assisted me up onto the bed near the door (DH and my bed). I look over and see DD awake and crying. It broke my heart. I reassured her that I would be okay, but I was sick and they were going to take me to the hospital and make me feel better. They'd stay here with daddy and they'd all go about their day like normal. I'd have my phone and daddy can check on me and vice versa.

The paramedics took some vitals and got some information. There was also WDW resort security there to make sure things were okay and get some information about me as well. I hugged and kissed DD and told her I'd see her real soon and the paramedics took me down to the ambulance.

This kind of made me mad ... I mean ... most people are nosey. I'm nosey. But don't stand there and gawk! Go about your business (watch from your window) and give the people who are sick some privacy and respect! Seriously, is it really necessary to stop the paramedic and ask if things are okay? No. Apparently it's not okay, but not life threatening since there are no sirens. Yes, I managed to gather a crowd. It was necessary for all the guests to come out of their rooms and stand there around the ambulance. I hope you all enjoyed the show. Sorry I didn't flash any parts for you so you could get a better show.

Anyway, once in the ambulance, one of the paramedics handed me a bag and then began an IV to give me some medicine (Zofram,I think he called it?). He also started to take blood, but my vein collapsed -- so he threw all the blood he collected away. I'm not real sure why (maybe someone can shed light on it?).

Then it was off to the hospital (no siren -- it's not an emergency).

Once in the ER, I get checked in by a super sweet lady. She asked several questions (what did you do and eat today, did you drink, etc). Then I was moved to a room. I thanked the paramedics OVER and OVER. The nurse came in and checked the IV. She pulled our a syringe and said she was going to test it. She started to inject the fluid into it and OMG THE PAIN! She said she needed to start a new one.

So now I have IVs in both arms -- but only one hooked up to fluids. The gave me another dose of Zofram and two more bags of fluid (I had one in the ambulance). She also took blood.

At 12:39AM, I asked for prayers on FB -- so I that was about the time I was moved into a room.

I had been in there about an hour and a half when the doctor came in. He was sure it was just something I ate that didn't agree with me (not that I ate something bad, but something just upset my stomache -- if that makes sense). He gave me yet, another dose of Zofram, and then injected something into my fluid bag (Pepcid I think ... it was for reflux).

Some time later, they come back and give me Phenergen. That stuff knocks me out COLD. So I don't remember much after that. I remember them being sure it was something not agreeing with me and gave me a prescription for Phenergen and something for reflux (I don't recall, I didn't get them filled since I wasn't sure where a pharmacy was). They then released me.

This was when they called a taxi for me. I had been waiting for a taxi for at least 20 minutes when a guy approaches the info desk and asks for them to call one for him. Not even 5 minutes later, a taxi pulls up and I start heading out to it. I ask the driver if he was there to pick me up (since they gave my info to the taxi company) and he said yes. As I'm climbing into the taxi, I overhear the guy say, "No, that's fine. You go ahead and take this taxi and I'll just grab the next." Seriously? I had been waiting for almost half an hour for this taxi! Plus, he was there for ME. Get over it and wait for your own. I would have been livid if he stole my taxi. It's after 4AM at this point. And I was still feeling ill. I would have totally jumped his butt if he tried to steal MY taxi after all the waiting I did.

I thanked the driver for coming out to get me so late and let him know where I was staying at CBR. I had my resort ID ready in case they stopped him on the way in (they didn't). My total fare was around $18 and I tipped well (I hope) for him picking up a fare at 4AM.

I stumble up to the room (I didn't want to call and wake the kids) and attempt to go in. DH had put the deadbolt thing on, so the door was LOCKED. I call out for DH to open the door and he gets out of bed and helps me into bed. He puts away my bag and phone and glasses and covers me up. He asked if I needed anything and tucked me in. I went out COLD.

Up next ... how long am I bedridden for?

OH NO!!! I hate hearing about anyone being ill at Disney!!! Your evening sounds awful!!! I'm no expert but I also don't understand why the lady had to start another IV on you. From someone else whose veins collapse regularly and has to be poked a million times wasn't one good IV enough!?!??!?!

My DH got sick on our trip as well and was in bed off and on for four of the 7 days. I hope to have a better trip this year when we go in June. He feels the same way about LOTS of the food at Disney that you feel about your dinner that night. It just doesn't taste right when you are sick.

I hope you aren't bedridden for too long. I do hope you get to enjoy more of the parks with your family!!

OMG Liddy!!! I totally forgot about this part of the trip!!! How could I forget??? How totally awful for you - I can't even imagine what was going through your mind at the time - I would have been a total wreck.

I know, for a fact, how long you were bed ridden for... So I'll let you tell the story... But I will say, that I am still so glad you are OK. (((Hugs my friend)))

Oh - And Kouzinna looks awesome... Shoulda booked there... Next time.

One last thing... How is Stormy doing??? I've been meaning to ask for the last couple of days, I hope he is home and doing better now.

This isn't my first rodeo with being ill at WDW ... and oddly, not my worst (but the last one didn't put me in the ER). In 2009, I got sun poisoning and was sick ALL week.

They had to do a 2nd IV because the first one was bad. The vein collapsed or broke or whatever (the paramedic said collapsed, and I don't recall what the nurse said in the ER) and when she went to put fluid in the first IV, I screamed in pain. So she did a 2nd IV so she could draw blood and pump more fluids through me painlessly.

Sorry your DH got sick last trip. It's always been my fear that my kids will get sick. No big deal if I miss out on WDW ... but if my kids get sick, that's a big deal for me.

I will state that I wasn't bedridden for too terribly long -- and I only spoil it because those reading D's and Corri's TRs would already know that.

You probably forgot because no one really wanted to talk about it while we were at WDW. We had better things to talk about. Plus, I don't think you knew the whole story, either. (I had to save some things for you for the TR.)

Kouzzina was great as always. We've yet to really have a bad experience there, but most places at WDW get mixed reviews, and this was one according to a comment on my FB post.

Stormy is still in his cast. It should be removed next Tuesday though. They said his leg looked healed, but was still pretty fragile, so they put the cast back on. He's done well, and he doesn't fight or cry when we have to put him in his cage.

Granted ... last night, he did hide from DH. He rarely goes into the kids rooms without one of us .. but the past few nights, he's curled up in bed with DD if we haven't given him attention in the living room. So DH went to find him (I was already out cold) and couldn't. He checked both kids' beds. Nope. He went back into DD's room, and the cat had climbed UNDER the covers. DH had to fish him out and then cage him.

We had to keep him in Benedryl all week and he ran a fever a time or two...but nothing like what you had to go through!

The kids are so cute!

And being sick at disney is no fun : ( My second trip ever I had come down with the Flu the night before we left and half of the vacation was a haze.
Other then the fact that I REALLY liked eating chicken fingers and french fries that came in a bucket at the CBR..

First of all, I'm so sorry you got so sick!! That's everyone's worst nightmare - paying all that money to be sick. Secondly, that was the best review of Universal that I've ever read. Seriously. After reading all you did (and all you didn't do), my daughter and her boyfriend decided that there was enough to keep them happy at IoA without hoppers for a full day. Thank you again for the information! Finally, I manage a restaurant and the reason we will start a waiting list even if there are empty tables is to give the servers and/or the kitchen a chance to get caught up. If either the kitchen or the servers get overloaded, nobody has a good exerience. Plus, we don't just let people sit at an empty table to wait because the first server to free up takes the first name on the wait list, and if they are already sitting at a table not in her section then that causes more confusion for servers that are already on the brink of a melt-down.

BTW, it looks like what you had was broccolini, which is a cross between regular broccoli and chinese broccoli. Much better than the regular broccoli that most of us are used to eating.

I was terrified about going alone -- and trying to figure out how I was going to get back! And what would happen if something "bad" happened. It was very nerve-wracking ... but ... I didn't want to get the kids up. What fun would they have sitting in the ER? So I made what I felt was the best decision ... and let everyone else sleep while I went. DH said he didn't rest well -- he was worried. And DD sat up crying for a bit. I hated that she woke up ... (DS slept through it all and had no clue that I ever left).

Sorry that your DS was ill last year. It's not fun, I tell ya!

I take it you play WoW? (What server?) We couldn't help but throw in some references for our "friends back home". Plus ... WoW and WDW is all I breathe anymore (outside of my family, obviously).

I'm glad I was able to shed some light on IoA for your situation! We had plenty to do ... and when we were finished with rides, it was character hunting. Next year I plan to not do hoppers and will have bouts in the day for hunting characters to fill out time.

I used to wait tables ... and in the places here, if there is a table and someone standing at the door, it gets filled. So it's nice to hear how other places do it. If we were on a wait in the places I worked, we were instructed to keep tables cleared (for easier busing) and to try to alleviate camping. We were always focused on turning the tables, as the more we could turn them, the more revenue for the restaurant (and more tips in our pockets). So it was just strange for me to see empty tables (and a wait) with my background. But I can totally make sense of letting kitchen and servers get caught up (wish the restaurants I worked at would do that!!!). There's nothing like being triple-sat on a busy night and food takes 30+ minutes to come out of the kitchen.

Broccolini ...Hmm... Never heard of it. I was wondering if it was broccoli rabe or something -- but I've only heard of that on the Foodnetwork shows I watch (cough-all of them-cough) ... but never paid attention to what it looked like. I just know it was slightly different and SO delicious! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to track down Broccolini and try to make it at home. YUM!

Sorry you could not find me we were there just most likely in our room. We had an ADR for Cape May at 5 pm but DH laid down and fell asleep so I decided it was a lost cause and we would have to pay the $20 no show charge as it was too late to cancel. I made an ADR for Marrakesh for 7:30 and laid down myself at 5:30 never intending to fall asleep I woke up it was 6:30 woke DH but he did not want to go over to Epcot so I went out on the balcony and watched the BW performer spinning plates. finally DH got up and we went down to the BW and had pizza sitting at a table near the water. The time on the receipt of when we ordered the pizza was 8:19pm, so we were out and about just late sorry I missed you

It has always been my biggest fear ... and quite honestly, I stress over it EVERY year.

Does Cape May really charge a no-show fee? I thought it was just the dinner shows and some of the character meals.

You were eating pizza when we were leaving. My dessert pictures were taken at 7:56 PM according to the stamps ... so factor in nibbling, check, paying, and then trudging our way out the door (since they failed to provide wheelbarrows) ... I'd say it was a bit after 8. Hmm.... The timestamps on the kids with their wands was 8:32. SO I guess we got out quicker than I thought. Regardless, just missed you. But I did look!! (There was a crowd gathered outside watching a performer and I did scan it for potential Sheila's.)

My goodness, like D I had totally forgot that you got sick while you were there. Between sun sickness, bug flying in your eyes, and now this. . . do you get scared when you are there? You love being there but wonder what is going to happen this time.

I was going to tell you that looks like broccolini, but I guess someone already answered that (yea I watch a lot of cooking shows). As for them throwing out the blood, here is my best guess. There is a vacum in the tubes that helps such up the blood when it is drawn. If they do not get enough blood with the blood draw they are unable to use that tube again since the seal has been broken and the vacum is no longer working. The tests need a certain amount of blood to run, so they probably didn't have enough blood to run the test they need to run.

Well at least I know you felt better on the last day of your trip since I met you there.

Finally here and just read it all!! What a great report so far!

I really love seeing the IoA pictures since we've never been

I'm sooooo sorry you were so sick. How awful!! The medicine you were given was Zofran. I know all about it because I had to take it through both my pregnancies. At that time it was fairly new and mostly used by Chemo patients. After trying several other medications with no luck, and being hospitalized (this was at 13 weeks pregnant with DS), they tried the Zofran. INSTANT relief. OMG, I love that drug. I had it in the IV, then they prescribed it for me in a dissolve-on-your-tongue pill. (They also have a regular swallowable, but swallowing didn't work for me..if I swallowed any water, I was vomitting). I took it 2x/day (at $8/pill) for a couple months and then was able to go to once per day until I delivered DS. When I had DD, we saw where my "morning" (yeah right) was headed, and the doc got me on it before it got so bad. Also took it the whole time. Turns out I had abnormally high levels of the pregnancy hormone (like someone having triplets or more!) and that's why I was so sick. Anyways, Zofran is my friend. I actually JUST had it for the first time in almost 8 years this past December. I had strep that wasn't going away and then I started vomiting badly and, well, can't get antibiotics in. When I went back to the doc, I got a SHOT of Zofran (and one of antibiotics), and again it worked right away. There's just so many ways to get that good drug, LOL!!!!

I am so sorry that you had to go to the ER, that just plain sucks, no ifs, ands or buts about it!!
