It seems like many of you travel in 'family groups". How does it go?

Maybe I can take a stab at this. Honestly, I love my mother.. however, just like most people, she is also the person in my life who gets on my nerves the most. My father - as much as he is a really great guy, well, he is my dad and I still consider him to be the stick in the mud (yes, I know, he plays in a band so I am crazy right?)

Anyway, I have taken vacations with them since my daughter was 3. We did Disney World twice and the cruise last year. We stayed in rented condos and 2 bedroom suites together. Last year, we all shared a stateroom. This year, we have connecting rooms. It is a lot of together-ness.

However... they are grandma and grandpa. And they love their granddaughter to death. And she loves them. And the joy they get to experience by watching her on these vacations, is worth it. And she is so happy to have them there with her too. When I want it to be just us, they leave us alone, and when I need a break and want to spend time with my hubby, they are there to watch her for me. It works out well. Not to say we haven't had a moment or two, but, maybe it is just the relaxation of the vacation or whatever, we seem to get over it quick.

I love traveling with my family. I can't imagine leaving them behind anymore. Even though we are all completely different, we have so much fun together. And these experiences will be unforgettable. I always figure, there will come a day when this won't be possible to do.

I hope you really enjoy yourself!!!!

I have traveled with my SIL many times. It helps that we get along. And it worked out great for us. last time we cruised, my youngest was only 3 and freaked out at the club when my dh and i went to Palo. I had my SIL hold the pager, NOT ME! :teeth: :lmao:

Of course sometimes itll be hard, but hey when you wanna get away, Ill be in stateroom2118, inlaw free and ready to console with Coronas and a tile lounger! Thats if we can get Leslie and Elaine to scoot over! :rotfl:

I just found a Navigator at ***************** from last year's St. Patrick's Day. (Okay, okay, I spend waaay too much time on the computer). The only event listed was a St. Patrick's Day sing-along and drink specials in one of the bars that evening.

pixiedust: pixiedust: :bday: HAPPY BIRTHDAY LESLIE!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

This will actually be the first cruise we have gone on since having kids that someone from our family hasn't gone with us. We have been on two previous cruises with DCL and on the first we had both sets of parents and my sister and her family. We had a very good time. I would suggest that you make it clear that everyone will have their own time alone and have family time together. That was the biggest problem for us. Our parents wanted us to be together all the time. On the second, my cousins and their daughter went. That trip was not so great. They really don't have the same discipline philosophy as us and we were miserable with their child acting horrible (examples would be following Pluto around pulling his tail and not one word from either parent, coming to dinner and taking her shoes off and then running around the dining room). On the other 5 cruises my MIL has gone. They have been on Carnival and Princess and it was great having her there. She liked to come back to the room after dinner (late seating and the late shows and my kids liked to stay with her) so the two of us were able to go and do things together. It is sometimes challenging because you have more people to please, but I am with KCarl the memories are priceless. We are all kinda bummed that she isn't coming along this time. My daughter and her share a room and they think that is awesome. They call each other "roomie" the entire cruise. I know my kids are never going to forget the times they have shared with their grandmother on those cruises. I think you should just relax and it will probably go much smoother than you expect.

I actually got my suitcases out this past weekend and even started going through clothes. I got most of my door signs completed and got my pillowcases ready for the transfers. :Pinkbounc I am really hoping to have it all finished by this weekend so I can relax all next week and actually get on the ship rested rather than worn out! I always bring too much stuff! My MIL comes with one small bag and one hanging bag and we have suitcases popping out the windows of the van! This time it's going to be different...Have you heard that before?!

Looking towards the 10th when the final school bell rings more than I can even say! pirate:

I just had a very strange picture of people who are strangers, yet know odd things about one another, forming a pyramid on a tile lounger! Bring on the Coronas! :drinking1 Thanks for all of your encouragement! I know I'll have a great time on this cruise no matter who is with us & the kids are looking forward to cruisin' with the grandparents. Besides, DH & I will save TONS of $$ on souvenirs - Grandma can buy 'em!

Mortlives - :shamrock:...and it's no, nay never...:shamrock:

There is (or was 5 years ago) a fun Irish sing-along place in KW. Something like "Irish Kevin's" He had a show at Rumrunners a million years ago when we were on our honeymoon, then we went back for our 5 year anniversary he had his own bar on Duvall Street. Lots of fun!

:welcome: MTH! Wow, another 5-7yo boy in our group. Lots of new friends!

It is a bright and sunny -12F day here in beautiful Eagle River, Alaska.
We leave in 1 week and 15 hours!!

pixiedust: :welcome: :welcome: MTH! My son will be having his 7th birthday on the Magic (3/16). I made a cute birthday sign for the door to put out that day. Remember to tell them in the dining room that it is his birthday. They will do something for him. We were on the Carnival Conquest last year on DS birthday and the counselors from the youth program came by during the night and decorated the door and even had a little gift for him. It was great. Different cruise line, but I am sure Disney will do something nice too. :goodvibes

I'mWong...Cool, my DS's b-day is on the 13th. We did a b-day notification with our reservation and I too have packed (well, not quite yet, but have put together) some decorations for the big day! :hyper:

A general question...I've read elsewhere that we can bring our own alcohol and water onto the ship. Is this true? If so, how much are we allowed to bring on? Is it better to carry-on or put in the checked luggage? :scratchin

Any other tips would be really appreciated...there's just so much information in these forums, it would take a year to go through it all!

And I too am looking forward to St. Paddy's celebrations onboard! :)

BTW...is there anyway to see the most recent posts first, rather than oldest to newest? :confused3

:welcome: Welcome MTH and Family!!! :welcome:
You are gonna LOVE DCL!!
Regarding St. Patty's Day. Since it is CC day.. and our last night... my guess is that the Pub Night that night in Diversions will be Irish themed. The last Pub Night is not to be missed. The Cruise Staff usually does a little skit and it's almost always hilarious. Sorry.. it's just for adults... but it's a blast!!!

MTH: Yes.. you can bring your own alcohol :drinking1and H2O on board. If it's glass bottles, I would recommend to carry it on since you never know if it will make it thru luggage handling. Plastic bottles should be okay to put in checked luggage.
DCL does have a beverage station on Deck 9 with pop, coffee, tea, milk etc. There is also a filtered water dispenser... if you only bring a few bottles of water you can always refill them there. You can request ice twice a day from your room steward, and there is a "cooler" in the room that holds a few bottles.

Good morning!

DisneyPinDiva...thanks for the info! I think we'll just bring a few bottles of water then (less to carry!)

Even though we did not get the "snow storm" they were calling for last night, it's cold and wet and I'm getting very anxious to go! My son asked if we could start packing after school today...so today we start the "big pack"! :goodvibes

We are now all in single digits!! WWOOOOHHHOO. I have been buying so much stuff for this trip. Well its gonna be summer soon so We need all that stuff anyway.....right? :teeth: :confused3

Of course my ds9 woke up with a fever of 101.5. Im gonna call the dr to see it i can get him in today. Needless to say, the rest of us are drinking airborne like its going out of style!!!

Castaway Stowaway...I hope your DS9 feels better soon...my DS5 had his bout of fever two weeks ago, me last week and my DH this week...guess we're getting it all out of the way :teeth: Except that I now need a root canal (haven't slept in 2 days!) but can't get it scheduled until after the trip!

Ditto the WHOOHOO 9 days to go!

BTW...we're flying Northwest...anybody heard if the settled or not? If they close, will Disney reschedule our flights for us (we booked the air with them too)? A bit edgy about it, :scared: but have decided to drive if necessary!

Oh, and we are getting the snow/ice "storm" (not too bad), so looking forward to the 11th even more! :worship:

As of right now......
