Help! So I am a local and taking my daughter to MK on Jan 7th for the first time for her birthday. I found out it’s the marathon weekend. I’m not worried about crowds but I’m worried about the road closures and getting to the park. We are staying at Bonnet Creek for the weekend but only going to MK on Saturday. I was planning on getting to the parks right at open but I’m not sure it will be possible now. Is traffic and road closures really that bad? Should I be leaving super early to get there before open?? First time poster. Thank you!

This is the current disclaimer on WDW:

Please be aware that several roads will be operating under traffic restrictions or closed completely to accommodate runDisney events on the following dates:
  • January 6, 2023, from 10:30 PM through January 7, 2023, at 10:00 AM, Walt Disney World Half Marathon
  • January 7, 2023, from 10:30 PM through January 8, 2023, at 12:30 PM, Walt Disney World Marathon
Please allow for additional travel time. We appreciate your understanding for any inconvenience.

I believe the actual road closures will be posted the closer we get.

World Drive will be closed "early" Saturday morning as this is the part of the usual course for the Half Marathon - however, the race starts at 5:00, and all runners will have started by 6:00. It is 5 miles to the MK entrance on the course, so with the 16:00 minute per mile time constraint, the last runners should be past the TTC (mile 4) by 7:00, so the World Drive will be open for traffic by then (and they may open some lanes for the parking booths before that). If you leave super early, you will be detoured away from World Drive, and as that is the only way into MK, it won't help you much, so 7:00 AM is likely the earliest that you would be able to get to the Parking Lots at TTC.

Does anyone know how much DHS gets affected by the marathon? Meaning crowd levels, wait times, etc, not travel to and from the park.

So as to not start a new thread, I’ll hijack and ask here first. I’ve looked at the road closure maps for the marathon, so I’ve seen the schematics and the timing. We fly in at 9:00am on Sunday, January 8th. We are staying at Coronado Springs and will have a rental car. I’m assuming we will be able to make it to the hotel, but it may take it bit longer/may have some (hopefully well-marked) detours. Does anyone knows what the roads will actually look like as opposed to just looking at red lines on the maps?
