Marathon Weekend 2027

Ok, so I was not feeling it after my long run today but I started to distract myself by thinking about costumes for MW. Nothing concrete yet, just some scribbles. need to ask DD and DS if they want to coordinate for their races.

is it too early?

I’ve started thinking about it already a bit. At this point, I’m planning on a “greatest hits” from previous marathon weekends. My marathon outfit will probably be a repeat of my 2017 outfit.

I might consider one new look for the weekend, but my ensembles tend to be pretty lowkey.

SAFD: Based on early returns it looks like Simba is going to be a mighty king, but I will commit the mild sacrilege of voting for the acquired IP since I think Empire is the better movie. But Lion King is a worthy champion.

@camaker let me add my thanks for running the March Madness bracket! Top notch work!

ETA: shoot - Ahsoka and Kenobi need to fit in there somewhere, too, and Acolyte. Can’t recall where they fit, though!

I know you're not including the animated works, but you really need to have watched Rebels to understand what's going on in Ahsoka, which is effectively a fifth season of Rebels. And even Andor has a brief call back to a Rebels episode (explaining why Cassian didn't bring Mon to Yavin himself after rescuing her from the Senate building). Also, some of the animated stuff is pretty solid. Rebels and Clone Wars and Bad Batch are all pretty good, and the new Maul series is off to a promising start and Maul looks completely badass in it.

Might be stirring the hornet's nest here but quite frankly if I was going to exclude something it would be episodes 7-9 based on just how god-awful they are. The prequels aren't great either but have some redeeming features. I cannot say that about the sequel trilogy. It's really just... bad, with Rise being the nadir of 1-9. I'd rather pretend 7-9 don't exist.

Part of the reason why I have no compunction in voting for the "acquired" movie in Empire is because the movies actually made under Disney's umbrella are horrible, at least the ones telling the Skywalkers' story.

It is not too early. When I signed up for MW2025, in March of 2024 of course, I had the base layer of my costumes not only chosen, but purchased before the end of the month. Of course, I then procrastinated actually finishing the costumes until like a week before I left, but that's a different matter entirely.

I'm not a huge fan of the sequel trilogy overall, but I absolutely loved The Force Awakens, and it's still my second favorite Star Wars movie. Where the ST fails for me is the lack of coherence overall, and the fact that every movie basically undid what the previous one did (and yes, that includes TFA despite me liking it). I enjoy (most of) the characters and think they're overall better-made movies than the prequels, but they really suffer from not having the endgame figured out early on. Whereas the prequels have great ideas but man, George needed another writer and director. :P

I’m just plain old and most enjoy space battle scenes and lightsabers, with a good topping of Emperor cackle, because the nostalgia of it all brings me back to the joy of the OG trilogy of my childhood. I need very little from SW to thrill me and am happiest when things are kept relatively simple! Give me aaaaalllll the Lucas CGI eye-candy. I never knew what was going on with Mandalorian and would’ve stopped watching but my son enjoyed it and I enjoy spending time with him. I feel the same way about Maul so far. Andor was something else entirely - one of the best stories I’ve ever seen told through TV and easily stands on its own away from any SW tie-ins, IMO. I don’t love 7/8/9 the way I do 3/4/5/6 and rarely re-watch them, but they bring me back to the OG enough to rate.

TFA was probably the best of the sequel trilogy but my issue with it was that it was pretty much the same story as A New Hope, only not as good. I could write paragraphs on Rey and Hux and Starkiller Base but I won't spoil your love of the characters. 😂

Oh, 100%. Part of the reason the OG trilogy worked out so well is that he DID have Spielberg and others to clean up the cheesy dialogue and plot holes in his original scripts. By the time the prequels came out George didn't think he needed help anymore. Guess he thought Anakin/Vader's backstory could just write itself. Not so much.

Absolutely. I wish they could have stuck with their original plan to make five seasons of it. It was a masterpiece.
