Marathon Weekend 2027

The Goofy numbers include Dopey runners, since they finished Goofy, too. So the actual number of standalone Goofy runners is ~1,075.

I’m thinking the Goofy total includes the Dopey runners as well, since they are technically participants in that challenge also. No way there are more Goofys than Dopeys. At the expo I think they had one or two kiosks for Goofy, and a long row for Dopey.
I think that's right. And yes, there was just one Goofy booth at the expo. #TeamGoofy is a much more exclusive club than #TeamDopey ;)

Things to start making me nervous about registration day:

-All week they have been forecasting a big storm on late Saturday night-Sunday. Models vary and we are predicted to get anywhere from 9-20in of snow. Given the current temperatures, this will be extremely heavy and wet snow, which means power outages are highly likely because trees will definitely come down. We have a generator, but if the lines with the internet cables come down as well, I'll be completely reliant on cell service.

-If the storm moves north, we are predicted to get ice instead of snow. And all of the same power outage things remain.

-On MONDAY we are predicted to get around another 8+ in of snow. The kind that makes trees fall down more/again. And people will be going to work and sliding off roads and into power poles. *sigh*

We are usually one of the last spots to get our power restored in our county because there are fewer people on our power runs, and they prioritize getting it back on for lines that serve more houses.

Well… I did run my first race, a marathon, because it was ONLY $10 more and who wouldn’t want twice the distance for only a few more dollars. I mean it was so economical. Realistically it won’t happen in 2026 or early 2027, but my MIL did say she wanted to go to another race weekend before things turn for her. So maybe late 2027 or 2028 MW? I got a LOT of work to get back into racing condition though. We’ll see how things continue.
If you're back for MW 2028, I need to make sure I'm there so I can finally meet you in person!

As much as this group excels at enabling, I have a slightly different perspective and that is "just because your friends are doing something doesn't mean that you have to." It's okay to be different.

After doing Dopey twice, I decided that I'd been there, done that, and was ready to move on. My body doesn't like the marathon distance. I can do a half marathon and then continue on with my day. A marathon, I'm feeling crummy for at least 2 days afterward. And as my friend so rightly put it, with Dopey, the trip was running with a side of vacation. I wanted to enjoy my trip more.

This past year, I "just" did the 10K and half and it was one of the best trips that I've had. We got to sleep in and enjoy a full park day instead of doing the 5K. Then I spectated for the marathon, which was SO MUCH FUN. What I didn't expect was being able to enjoy meet-ups more because I didn't have to measure standing around with saving my time on feet for the marathon. We were also able to stay at Disney Springs for a while on Saturday night, knowing that I didn't have run in the morning. Plus, there was never one ounce of FOMO for the entire weekend. In fact, I said "I'm so glad that I'm not doing Dopey" numerous times to my traveling partner.

So the people out there that are on the fence, it is possible to "just" do whatever you are thinking of and it is 100% okay. And if the FOMO does strike, MW2028 will roll around and then you'll know what you want to do then.

Are you in Wisconsin or Michigan? It sounds like they’re going to get HAMMERED this weekend (and not the fun kind of hammered Wisconsin does so well).

I’m in Iowa, so we shouldn’t get hit as hard but I’m a little nervous about travel plans for a long weekend and potentially getting stuck away from my laptop. The chances are low, I think, but not zero.

Good luck and stay safe!

This is such a great point. I live near enough to WDW that I visit often for non-race vacation time - that frees up race weekends to be entirely race focused without feeling like I’m missing out. But if I had to combine race + vacation in one trip? I’d definitely be going with the shorter distances for better balance.

It's sounding like MW28 is going to be a big one for this group!
Well I won’t be going. We are taking a year off. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yeah. Kind of across the lake from Green Bay, in Michigan.

The worst part is that it was in the 60s on Monday, almost all of our snow was gone, and now this. 😫

edit: just saw this. Comments are very skeptical, some wondering if it’s supposed to be in cm and someone forgot to convert to inches. I want this to be very, very wrong. We got about 5-6in overnight, but it’s above freezing and raining intermittently. Such a joy.

We’ve gotten spring storms like this before, and the last really big one knocked out our power for 8 days.

That said… it took multiple Dopeys before I felt like I’d gotten what I wanted out of it and was ready to move on. I’d suggest thinking about whether it really is just FOMO or if you have unfinished business with Dopey!
This is a great point. I think that may be a large part of it. The first time we just concentrated on finishing.
I've done three Dopeys and will definitely do more, but knowing that, I have no problem alternating to two or three races every year or two. I think it helps to know you've done it and will do it again.
That may be part of it. I'm not sure how many more of these DD will want/be able to do with me :)

Such a great perspective. Thank you so much for sharing! The enjoying trip more is exactly my hesitation.

We also have crazy snow estimates:

Saturday looks pretty tame, though the start time has gradually crept up from 10pm to 4pm

Sunday is looking very gross!

It sure seems that way. I could do without all the Phillies and Eagles propaganda.
Listen, I'm FROM the Greater Philly area and could do without all the Eagles propaganda. Phillies don't bother me so much, maybe because I'm more a baseball guy than football guy anyway. (And maybe also because I think Jalen Hurts is overrated around here.)

Me on January 11th: "Okay, I did it (the Dopey). It sucked getting up 4 days in a row at 2/2:30 am, and I don't ever need to do it again."
Me on March 12th to DD: "What do you think .. should we sign up for the Dopey again?"
Yep, sounds about right! Although for me the second sensation came later the same day on Marathon Sunday. 😂

DW has a coworker up in Michigan and was hearing similar with warm earlier and now blizzard

Two thoughts:
  • 17 - 20 inches tracks :duck: (yeah, ducking again)
  • That's what you get for looking at a commie European model. You should be looking at the 'Murican model; it is much better (said in my best Sam the Eagle voice).
