Marathon Weekend 2025

To @nancipants and whoever else recommended the Janji Pace shorts -- THANK YOU!!! I just did a test run in them over top of a pair of leggings with the pockets stuffed FULL of alllll the fuel I'll need for the marathon and it's like they weren't even there. Didn't budge, and nothing got squashed or broken. Now, it looks pretty ridiculous unless I add the skirt layer on top (TBD gametime decision) but I don't even care. These shorts are MAGIC!
I’m a very frugal gal by nature but I splurge for these. My first pair was a birthday present to myself. I now have three. Plus two leggings. And two ascend bras because my bras must have pockets. I love them all.

I'm layering-up for this morning's inaugural Polar Opposite Peachtree 10k here in Atlanta. It's the same route as the annual Peachtree Road Race in July, but in reverse. Currently a chilly real-feel of 28° outside, so the race should live up to its name. Thankfully MW shouldn't be this cold (fingers crossed!).

Ha, that’s awesome. I had debated signing up for that but wasn’t sure how it would fit leading up to next weekend or my travel schedule.

The wind is brutal out there. Have a great race!

Alarm went off at 6:30… I saw the Feels Like temp of 32º and went back to sleep until 7. It’s a new level of Florida-cold when you want to do your last cut-back run in weather like is expected around miles 10-13 on race day, but you need to wait for it to warm a bit. Also, I cannot feel my fingers. Inside my house. With the heat set to 68º.

Me being awake past 1 am every night is not boding well for Dopey.

For realsssssss. I’ve had super random night-owl-iness for like 3 weeks now and I feel like I’m doomed.
Oh yes, add me to this. My sleep is all over the place lately! The other night, I was in bed at 8:30 and asleep by 9. Last night? Got into bed at 9:30 and didn't fall asleep until midnight. And getting up before 8am lately is terribly hard. I’m dreading the 1:45am alarm next week and just so glad I only need to do it once!

After years of trying to get to sleep early for rD races I've realized my body just doesn't want to cooperate including with any sleep aids. If I try to go to sleep at 8 I'll toss and turn until after midnight. Everyone is different but what "works" for me with Dopey is just to give up on trying to force sleep to happen. Going to bed when I'm tired, napping after each race and sleeping in Monday morning is what I'm aiming for. Just kick me if you see me asleep in the corral on marathon morning! :rotfl2:

Let us know how it went. Coldest race I ever ran was a Pi Mile 5K at Georgia Tech and instead of being up in the 50s it was in the low 20s with a howling wind. I was so glad it was only 3.14259 miles instead of being a 10k.

Yes! I try to go to bed too early then lay there worrying because I can't fall asleep. At this point I just try to nap after each race and be off my feet by 8. With the new start time I predict I will get no sleep before the marathon.

Does the Photopass code match up with bib number? I’ve been checking periodically to see if bib numbers are up yet (taper boredom!) and they don’t seem to be visible anywhere but I now have a code to link photos that might seem to end in a bib number if it’s not just randomly assigned…

Unsurprisingly, it was cold! I was thankful for every layer I had, especially when an arctic wind gust would whip around the buildings with force. And a neck gaiter - which I received as a participant in last year's Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC - became my new favorite cold-weather accessory. It kept my neck relatively warm, a la a scarf, and I was able to pull it up to cover my lower face and nose. Big help!

Otherwise the race was great. Only 5,000 runners, so it felt much smaller than the massive July edition. And running down Cardiac Hill was a novelty, although getting up some of the longer hills into Buckhead was a chore. I was able to quicken my pace at the end and finish in just under an hour.

The unquestioned bonus for this race is the cool hoodie and medal, vs just a t-shirt for the regular Peachtree. Check 'em out:

I never used to have problems with sleep at home, only at hotels, where pharmaceutical intervention worked just fine to be asleep by 7pm for races. This not being able to get to sleep early at home thing is killing me! I can sleep a solid 8-9 hours easily… but my body only wants to do that from about 11pm to 7am. Which does not work for early morning runs or getting to work on time.

Yep, that should be our bib numbers. Not too surprising I gues since the expo passes are scheduled to come out Monday. Now to go check and see...

EDIT: Looks like they are just starting to load them as I do not have mine under the edit registration section yet. Or could just be user error on my part too.

Okay, got a run in here in west-central FL and have some data points to share that hopefully will be helpful to some…

I ran from 8:30-10am, wanting to simulate the last hour or so of the half with my slow time.
Starting conditions: 45º, dew point 31º, Feels Like 38º, winds NNE 15-20mph, 46% humidity, full sun, not a cloud in the sky
Finishing conditions: 50º, dew point 31º, Feels Like 47º, everything else the same

This is the #1 point I want to share: the sun here, even though it’s January, is INTENSE. It made a big difference in how I felt in the shade vs. full sun. This matters less for the half and not at all for the 5K or 10K, but should be a consideration for marathoners.

#2 big point is wind: it was gusty and when it blew, it was darned chilly, even in full sun. When I was in sheltered spots, it felt easily 10º warmer, even in the shade.

What I wore: thermal tights, super thin short sleeve over a thin long sleeve under a medium weight tech jacket, BondiBand as an ear cover, wool beret, cheap knit gloves, thin Buff neck gaiter.

How I felt: totally fine until about 9:15am, when I took off the jacket. Thermal tights were just right. Gloves came off within 20 minutes, but would have stayed on longer with no sun. Beret was okay… it was definitely warm, but tolerable. I took it off a couple times to see how much difference there was and it was negligible. In the same conditions, I could tolerate it being a touch too warm for the last few miles in the interest of costume perfection. :rotfl: BUT, and this is a good point for the marathoners: did I ever miss having the brim of a hat or visor to block the sun, even though I had on sunglasses. I’d only have to deal with a few miles of sun in the half, and it won’t be high enough to make a brim effective, anyway, but for the marathoners who aren’t finishing in 3ish hours? Yeah - I’d want that brim.

A couple unexpected points of interest…

I went though my 12oz bottle of Tailwind faster than I normally do - that usually lasts me 6+ miles, but I drink to thirst and I went through it in 5. And I was HUNGRY shortly after finishing. I forget how much more fluid and calories I need in the cold, so that was a good reminder.

The cold, dry air outside + really, really dry heated air inside he last 24 hours has wreaked havoc with my lungs and sinuses, both of which were burning at the end of my run and I got a slight nosebleed. I use an inhaler for asthma, but will also make sure to pack some saline spray to lube my sinuses.

Now, of course, the half forecast has flipped again to warmer conditions, so all of this data collection may be for nought at my end lol! #stillbringingitall

@Cliff Secord Nice hoodie!

Today I was supposed to run 7 miles. I wish I could say my decision to not do it was because of weather - it is 22 and feels like 13 right now - just love Michigan! But my issue is still my stupid leg from my slip the other day. It is getting better, no longer painful to walk up/down stairs but still tender. So I am going to replace today’s run with two dog walks - 4 in just a few and 3 more this evening. I honestly think I am going to be fine, because it seems to be healing quickly. But I have missed 2 runs, today will make 3 and that leaves me feeling anxious about missed runs and going into Dopey with an untested bum leg. I am going to try and get a 3 miler in on Monday at the resort.

Good news, only days away from riding Guardians of the Galaxy!

Yup! Got mine for “just” the marathon 11532 and submitted POT 2:12
