Marathon Weekend 2025

Why do I need to bring cash, a credit card, and a driver’s license with me while I run a marathon? Am I going to swing by the bank to open up a checking account? Maybe rent a car to speed through the Blizzard Beach parking lot faster?

My bib has my name on it and the rest of the information can be found through my number in case of emergencies. They give out free food and drink on the course. Anything I’d want to buy I can do post-marathon after picking up my stuff from gear check. I’ve run with my Magicband before, and can also use that to charge things.
Depends on the person but I keep a card on me in all my races in case I want to buy something on course. And yes WDW has the Magic Band but at times said system can be down for one reason or another so the CC is the backup. I saw this happen multiple times during my November trip. The system is good but it does break occasionally

I actually ended up needing to show my ID at Rocket City after I pulled at the half way point though I can’t remember why now.

Like it doesn’t happen often but it can happen that you need it.

Plus with cards with people offsite they don’t have charging privileges so they need to carry if they want to buy anything like a food or drink on course.

I always carry my id, insurance card, cc, and cash in a race. Maybe I should do when I’m on a long run too. I put it all in a ziplock bag together and put in in my spibelt. It’s the only thing I put in there so I don’t loose it. You never know what might happen. I want to be ready for every situation.

I use ApplePay (either phone or watch) to pay for anything on course or the food trucks at the start / finish. No need for a card with me. if I drive, I leave my DL in the car (I know - not the best idea but I'm honestly more likely to lose my DL on course while trying to get something out of my belt than someone stealing or breaking into my rental car)

I have seen two different forecasts over several websites. The one that I have seen more often is low of around 59 and highs in the low 70's for the four race days. The other I have seen is lows in the mid 40's and highs in the mid 60's. I will take the first!
I want the second. 60 is too warm for running in the humidity. Mid-40s is perfect running weather.

As we are getting closer I'm also realizing that my wife is going on a vacation with the kids and I'm going on a trip to run... and we are spending the night in the same hotel room and having some meals together.

My best friend and runDisney travel partner phrases it this way - either our trips are a running trip with a side of vacation or a vacation with a side of running. Dopey is definitely the former!

I always have my ID with me. I feel that it is a safety thing. Plus if you want an adult beverage at the finish line, you're going to need your ID.

The credit card is case I want/need to buy something and the cash is a backup as charging systems have been known to go down. Again, I see having both as a safety "just in case" thing.

If you are driving, take a photo of the row where you parked in the morning. You think that you're going to remember where you parked. Spoiler alert - you aren't!
You can use the Car Locator in the MDE app, but take a screenshot. My daughter and I parked my car during last Springtime Surprise and used the Car Locator only to be surprised that it didn’t keep the car’s location.

Thoughts on rides during the Marathon…

This is my first Marathon (I’ve run many half’s including 2 at Disneyland) and first RunDisney event at WDW. I’ve been contemplating riding the rides during the race, and based on my estimated pace should hit Everest and Rock n Roller Coaster at an appropriate time if I’d like to ride them.

I’m curious for those of you who’ve ridden rides during the race, did it impact the rest of your run when you chose to stop running, sit etc? I usually run continuously during my training runs and am curious how this has felt mentally and physically for those of you who’ve stopped to ride the rides.
As others have said, it’s not much different than a long wait for character photos or a toilet stop, except you get some pretty cool & crazy tracks on your Garmin, Tower of Terror and RnRC especially.

I really like the idea of enjoying a ride and taking in everything RunDisney has to offer but also don’t want to regret it for the final 5-10 miles of the race.
I run continuously in training too. I stop for photos and I did Everest and Tower my first Dopey. (I skipped RnRC because the restraints hurt my ears lol). I'll be honest...I loved the "break" from running. Now I look forward to Everest as a chance to sit down and for the cool wind :rotfl2: It is a bit tougher to get going after, mentally. My body is ready to be done but thankfully Everest is far enough into the marathon that it's not THAT many more miles after. It'd be way harder if it was at the halfway point for example. But I think the rides are worth it, honestly it's the highlight of the race for me.

I only stop during training to fill my water bottle or grab fuel from my car, so psychologically the stopping for photos/rides is a bit weird, but the pleasant benefit I found was my legs recover WAY faster. (And this is probably why people advocate so much for interval running :thumbsup2) Even though I run my usual marathon pace at Disney, my time is like an hour longer because of all the stops. And of course I'm sore after, but nothing like the soreness I felt from a non-Disney marathon without all the stopping. I had no trouble climbing the treehouse at Disneyland the day after the marathon in January, for example, whereas I could hardly do a flight of stairs after a non-Disney marathon. I didn't have any issue with my legs locking up at Disney, something I was worried about, but I think part of that is the temp (much warmer than at home for me) and just being so active throughout the week. Outside of running I am pretty sedentary since I have a remote desk job, so I'm pretty stiff. At Disney you are walking around the parks a lot and just keeping things loose, so I think that helps.

All that to say, I 100% recommend doing rides if you can, they are SO much more fun with all the adrenaline of the race! Plus the ride photos are forever!

I need to vent here because I am freaking out…
I did a 21 miler run on Monday ans it went really well. No pains whatsoever during the run. I was a little sore the next day but since yesterday, I have started feeling pain on the lateral side of my right knee… it mostly hurts when I stretch my leg completely or when I out whether on an hyperextended knee.
I never had that pain before and I never felt any pi during any of my training, I increased the mileage gradually… and now I am FREAKING OUT thinking I may have injured myself…
I have read about ITBS but am wondering if it can start up so acutely?
I haven’t been running since and am limiting walking, and trying to stretch / massage the surrounding areas.
I will try to get an appointment with a PT but with the holidays it might be hard to see someone within the next few days so I am wondering if I should withhold from running altogether…
Any thoughts or input?

"Today, Disney announced something really exciting! Bluey is coming to Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and even Disney Cruise Line starting in 2025!"

Wouldn't it be cool if they were in one of our runs? One can hope!
Longest line on the course! Ans I would wait in it. :D
What is a "Bluey"?
It’s the best show on TV, hands down. Adorable cartoon about a dog family from Australia. Has great lessons for kids and kicks me in the parent feels at least once an episode. I love it with and without my son watching.

Tylenol - last time I didn’t take it with me was 2011, so having to sign for it may be very stale data. Or very poor memory. I don’t remember which…
Cards/cash/ID - My tights have side pockets. Phone in the dominant-hand side; ID, a credit card, and a $20 bill go in the other side and usually don’t get touched, but are there just in case. Other stuff goes in the belt or zippered shorts pockets.
Transportation- a friend of mine drives from the resort to the parks, now that parking is included. I enjoy parking my car ant the resort and using just Disney transportation when there. Race day, I take the bus. Driver missed the Epcot exit last Jan. We went up one exit, turned around and were still there in plenty of time. That’s the only time I’ve had an issue with Disney transportation.
Sunscreen- I found SPF 30 packets on Amazon (wish it was stronger) and it’s easy to tuck one or two into a pocket. I usually apply some to my face and ears when going down Western Way. Not sure where it would be this time.
Nip guards - life savers for anything longer than a 10k. Total must-haves under moisture wicking material.
YMMV

Personally, I have some trepidation about Disney getting its hands on Bluey in a more significant way (especially considering recent announcements from the show creator.) And I love Bluey so much.
