Marathon Weekend 2025

Good morning RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). Last week's question was about staying entertained on the run and a lot of folks listen to music as their option of choice. It just so happens that Disney has a couple of movies featuring some relatively popular music, so let's keep with the music theme. What are your top 3 Disney movies (Pixar counts) from a musical standpoint?

SAFD: My first two positions are easy, but then it gets hard to choose simply because there are so many good choices.
  1. Nightmare Before Christmas. What can I say, I love this movie and it's loaded with great songs from top to bottom. "This Is Halloween" and this is far and away my favorite musical movie. It's not from the movie itself, but I particularly enjoy Marilyn Manson's version of that iconic song.
  2. Moana. From "We Know the Way" to "Shiny" to The Rock singing "You're Welcome", nobody knows "How Far I'll Go" just to rewatch this movie so I can listen to its soundtrack.
  3. Hercules. This spot was tough, but there's enough here to just edge out the competition. From the Muses to Meg to Hercules himself, the soundtrack pulls this movie from relative obscurity. A "Zero the Hero" situation, if you will.

Oh - this is a great question, and this is now going to take me a while - worried I’ve been influenced by the “Whole New Sound” album….

SAFD:

1. Encanto- For many reasons, but mainly because my now second ranked film has been #1 basically my entire life, I am shocked to have this here. But I absolutely love this movie and the primary reason is the soundtrack. “What Else Can I Do?” Is my personal favorite. The live performance at the Hollywood Bowl is just as watchable as the movie.

2. The Little Mermaid- “Part of Your World” is my all-time favorite Disney song. Every song works and propels the plot forward. It may be back to #1 at some point.

3. Frozen- I think the backlash to its popularity and amount of polarized contrarianism in our society has negatively impacted how it is now viewed. I’m still on board though.

So many more could have been included. I think when Disney animation (or classic Disney films) work it can largely be attributed to the music. I think it’s amazing they’ve hit on such a high percentage of their films.

SAFD: Sure! Let's pick our favorite children!

I have no idea how I would manage to get this down to just 3, least of all RANK them?!

Moana (mostly because "How Far I'll Go" could make me cry for an entire winter)

Beauty and the Beast (because I can sing along with every word)

Big Hero Six (because this list needs one that's not strictly a musical)

SAFD: I’ll go with
1. Moana.
2. Lilo and Stitch
3. Frozen 2. I think Frozen 2 probably is a bit better than the original but they’re both good.

Runner up to Robin Hood for its Oo De Lally theme song. Remember when all the movie credits were at the beginning of the movie and you just got a “The End” at the end. Oh simpler times.

SAFD: This is the hardest question I have ever answered ever. All of them? I'm limiting myself to Disney animation because otherwise there are just too many to choose from.

- The Lion King simply has to be up there. The songs are classics, and I love the instrumental soundtrack too.
- Hercules is also great. Who doesn't love the muses? And "Go the Distance" always makes me tear up.
- I'm now completely torn between Encanto, Moana, Tangled, and Tarzan. But I think my final spot is going to have to go to Moana - it just makes me happy.

However, my favorite individual Disney song is still "I'll Make a Man Out of You," as no one who reads my training journal will be surprised to hear 😂

Umm… this is tough after seeing a few listed.

My first instinct before seeing answers was

Mulan
Hercules
Tarzan

But I might replace Tarzan with Aladdin. Lots of good soundtrack choices from Disney!
Oh and if we are including live action - Newsies!! That would probably top them all for me.
