Marathon Weekend 2017!

I loved that so many people were picking up other people's discarded clothes. They were even shopping around picking up one thing and then seeing something better so they would drop the first thing to pick up the next. I am not sure I could put on someone else's sweaty clothes but it would have been hilarious to see someone run by in the blanket I dropped at mile 1.

Congrats to everyone who ran this weekend!
My half was canceled, but I still volunteered at the mile 12.2 water stop for the marathon. It was amazing seeing all of the runners push through the pain. Speaking of pain, that volunteer shift was one of the most painful things I've ever done in my life. Even when the sun rose, it was still insanely cold. With water on our hands and only rubber gloves on, it hurt so much. Never again in that weather!
Thanks for volunteering!!

You and your volunteer colleagues were spectacular all marathon long - it meant so much to all of us to know that every couple of miles there would be a bunch of you waiting with drinks (or bananas or gels or candy) and neverending cheer and encouragement. And yes I'm sure you guys were freezing...

I so agree with this! We runners get to warm up but the volunteers are out there for hours in the cold. Thank you volunteers!!

We focus a lot on the runners here, for obvious reasons, but I think everyone really appreciates the work the volunteers put in. Especially on days like Sunday! At least we runners get to layer up and keep moving to stay warm. Thank you!

Very true. LOT of wonderful people out there helping us get through the day.

In regards to shirts, I saw someone had listed a half marathon short on eBay with a buy it now price of $299. Guess they think they have a collectors item.

I lost my gloves after going through security and after running the first 5 miles without gloves my hands were freezing, especially my left hand as I run holding my phone in my right hand and that one didn't seem to get as cold.Okay so I'm inside MK and after running past probably over a dozen discarded gloves it was already in my mind to pick up a pair that looked clean.I made a stop to use a bathroom in Tomorrowland and outside the bathroom I saw a single glove that looked new and clean so I grabbed it,put it on and ventured on,my hand was warmer and I have no regrets.Outside this situation there's no chance I'm wearing someone's gloves but a near freezing marathon you put those things aside and just do it.As far as the near freezing conditions did anyone else see a guy running without a shirt?I saw him inside AK and I know at this point the sun was up but I'm sorry it was still like 44 degrees out!!

Okay so question I've been trying to figure out for a while, which is who exactly are these guys? View attachment 214238

I've always figured that they had something to do with the Grand Floridian (since their stops usually around there) and I remember during my last successful Princess I am pretty sure they had a Glass Slipper (and that pre dates the challenge). But I honestly don't know what they do.

I was curious, too. They seem to be in front of a wedding gazebo and when I passed they said something about waiting for a bride.
They're at a lot of the races...always a weird one in my opinion. :scratchin

THANK YOU so much for volunteering! All of the volunteers were amazing as usual!
If anyone has a marathon race shirt in a women's small or medium or a men's small they don't want, my DD27 will buy it from you. She switched from the half to the full and did great but runners who switched didn't get the marathon shirt.

Great meeting @FFigawi, @CheapRunnerMike, and spouses, and @camaker and @Keels and friend at DATW today! :)
Are you in the runDisneyRun Marketplace group on facebook? I bet people will be selling them there. I can post an ISO post there for you. :)

LOL!...good luck with that!!

Yes that was funny!

I ran my first Marathon today and I am just wondering if anyone else got similar results to this. I use MapMyRun App for all of my runs and it has always been extremely accurate, and today it told me that WDW Marathon was 27.08 miles?

My wife calls them Disney miles. Her RunKeeper app said 26.6; I was wearing Nike+ Apple Watch (26.8) and Garmin FR405 (26.6). Two bathroom stops, no photos, and I try to stay away from the "inside" track.

Thanks for the responses about the guys.

So on a different note you may remember my query on trying to find a drink to carry across the finish. Well the good news is I found one:

Turns out the China tea stand carries my favorite brand of Green Tea much to my delight. So yeah that was my finish line drink.

Thank you so much for volunteering. As a runner, I appreciate your time and dedication to the race. I couldn't have reached the finish line without you.

Your comments reminded me of one of the water station volunteers outside Magic Kingdom. At the time, it was still dark outside. As we approached the water station, she shouted in a voice similar to a beer vendor at a baseball station, "The water is ice cold. My hands are ice cold. The whole world is ice cold!" It's how I felt at the moment so I got a good chuckle.

I wonder if you found my husband's glove. We managed to lose 3 gloves along the course. My pair was lost sometime after mile 25. Oh well!

Was the person without the shirt dressed as Genie from Aladdin? I saw a man using body paint at his costume.

By the way, thank all of you about the advice for appropriate clothing for the race. Long tights were the right call in the end!

Honestly, I had a $3.99 blanket I picked up at CVS the day before I left. I carried it until the last second entering MK. I miss it! That little guy and I got through a lot. I keep telling myself he is helping someone else out...

That's right, it was so cold I formed an attachment to a blanket.

There were two guys that I saw a couple times along the course running together; one as The Genie and the other as Genie Jafar. They were both body painted and had really gone all out with their costumes. Pretty impressive, they had to be quite cold.

I did see the guy without shirt about the same place, as I passed thought he was crazy. Then a breeze kicked up and I knew it.

I saw an Aladdin shirtless with body paint and he wrote on his back using paint "I'm so cold".

My watch is never off as much in other races as it is in Disney. There are a couple pretty straight shots, relatively speaking, during the first miles but my mile marker kept coming up further and further away from the signs.

Old watch, and cold weather had it going out around 21.5 but was having to do some math every 5 miles to compare my watch pace to official pace (watch was 8 to 10 seconds per mile faster consistently).

I missed a lot of pages in the middle here but caught up on posts since marathon day! Congrats to everyone who ran! I ended up missing our meet - my friend is captain of a running team and they changed their time, so I wasn't able to do both. But I will make sure to meet you all next time!

I am still trying to process what just happened. But, I was the one who got a goofy bib from a TA for the same price of a half (turns out that was an awesome decision!) I've never done a full and at first wasn't going to even attempt it until the 2018 anniversary year for my first - and you know, training! Around Christmas decided to give it a go as a fun run.

Spoiler alert - I completed my first marathon! It was SO cold. I had so many layers plus a thin blanket. I was obviously only trained for a half, so was running 2 min longer miles than usual. I stopped for the bathroom I think 4-5 times, each one giving me an almost 20 min mile. I stopped for photos and chatted with friends. I was feeling great! But, just after AK my knee started feeling a little sore. I started taking a little longer walk breaks. Finally at 20 I just gave in and walked. Exiting WWOS I saw they'd swept those entering so I turned and saw the balloon ladies maybe 3/4 mile behind. I saw a parade bus and freaked out - sprinted at my full speed dodging like a crazy person. The bus started inching forward and I panicked. But it was just getting ready and I was long gone and never even saw a sweep. Didn't see the bikes again after that. But I paid for the sprint! For HS I randomly joined a pace group, but by the time we hit beach club I was walking again other than a few bursts. My lovely friend @twinsouvenirs was in line buying me a margarita so I stopped for awhile and then headed back out to finish and ran the last .2 with my fab drink (spectators seemed to get a kick out of that!) and my finish photos are pretty funny.

I stopped at the tent and bought a marathon jacket and then went to Mexico, where I cursed myself for picking the only place with steps. I napped. I didn't eat until about 1pm today - I got some calories from drinks at top of the world lounge though! I have 3 blisters, and my knee and ankle are sore. Squatting down to check under the hotel beds today was interesting. But, during the race I had no fueling issues, I never really lost energy, and I never hit a wall. My issue was purely my knee and not injuring myself. So, I actually feel super motivated for 2018 now :)
