Marathon Weekend 2016

I usually stay at POP and they open the food court for basic things like bagels,bananas,coffee,oj,etc...I usually bring a Kind bar and some bread with peanut butter which I had on half day but on marathon day this year I bought a bagel with cream cheese and toasted it in the toasters in the food court as I just can't eat an untoasted bagel.I'm going to assume most hotels will have something open to eat in the morning. This is a big event, they're ready for the things runners need, even the gift shop next to the food court had vaseline, band aids, aspirin, moleskin and other things runners might need all together right in the counter. The food court also had a grab and go brown bag with bagel,banana,etc..
I got the bag the night before and had it in the morning worked for me. I only did the 10k but for my first Disney event it worked out.

I will be flying JetBlue unless Southwest is that much cheaper I can't pass it up but I am still excited about the planning.

I bought JetBlue flights last month and then heard a rumor last week that JetBlue will begin charging for checked luggage. :headache: If that's true, then I wish I waited for Southwest rates.

Can they add those fees after you book the flight though? I have a JetBlue AMEX card so I don't think I would have baggage fees anyway, I will have to look into it to be sure. Either way, I have enough points for a free flight so even with the baggage fees it will most likely be the best way to go.

From what I understand ... if you already booked your flight, you won't be charged. They're changing over to tiers of prices, so for fares that don't have those tiers, I can't imagine they'd charge for baggage.

So I am looking to book my stay and since this is my first time participating marathon weekend (Goofy Challenge) I am really stressing out over what resort to stay at for my trip. Does anyone out there have suggestions for resort to stay at?? Moderate to Deluxe is the preference...especially with race day recovery before post race exploring.

We stayed at POR last year and that was great no problems whatsoever. We are staying beach club for the first time and have heard very good things about that resort for marathon weekend as well.

I have a question I am hoping that some of you can offer advice. I am dealing with achilles tenderness in my right foot. I have been doing a bunch of research and am setting up some stretching and strengthening plans. But I was wondering if any of you have dealt with this and if so if you had any advice on how I might speed up the recovery.

I am going to slow down my milage and rest a little more but do not intend to stop running completely, right now it is just tenderness after a long run. But it is my achilles for sure and that makes me nervous. Any advice?

@Waiting2goback - sorry, I don't fly often, so I'm completely ignorant. What @SarahDisney says makes sense. Hopefully your card and points status will yield favorable results for you!

@Baloo in MI - I'm just a newbie runner, but I hope you find the cause of the tenderness issue soon! The veteran runners here are great at sharing their experiences. :goodvibes

Please don't try to speed up your recovery. This is one of the overuse injuries that you don't want to push to the extreme because it can very quickly get worse. Better to fix it and heal it now than run into more severe problems later. My advice would be to stop running for a little while until the soreness and tenderness have gone away. I would substitute cross training, yoga, and strengthening exercises to help the tendon heal and recover.

Don't stress too much. All of the resorts have transportation...I've stayed at POR, POFQ, BCV, Grand Floridian and the Boardwalk and they were all fine.

I don't have any advice...except to be very, very careful. I know someone who started having Achilles issues and ended up tearing the tendon, which required surgery and a very long recovery period (almost a year, if I remember correctly - and she was in great shape before the injury happened).

I wouldn't try to speed up your recovery. I'd rest it. Hope you feel better!

It's largely echoing what others have said, but I don't really think there's a way to go wrong. I've not really heard any poor accounts from any of the resorts, there is race and expo transportation from all of them, and the cast members are all aware of the race weekend and in most cases are very encouraging and helpful with any issues you come across (using a generality here, but I have yet to have a negative experience with any cast members). I'm sure you'll have a great time regardless of which resort you choose.

Personally, I like staying at the Epcot resorts. They're close to the parks for short trips during the weekend, an easy bus ride to/from the race, and a short stumble home from DATW on Monday. Really, though, all the resorts are good ones for race weekend. We've stayed anywhere from All-Star to CBR to BW without any major issues or problems at any of them. Sure, All-Star had a longer bus line to get back after the finish, but it also was a lot cheaper than the others. CBR had the shortest bus lines in the morning and wasn't as expensive as BW. They all have their trade-offs, you just need to decide which is most important to you for the money. :)

Well if money is no object I stayed at the Poly for this year's marathon and it was great. The monorail is a great way to get to the race; a quick walk to the TTC and a few minutes later you are at Epcot. Then after the race I just hobbled to the monorail and collapsed on it. After a shower and a 20 minute nap, it was right on to the MK monorail and spent the day exploring MK. And the MK has my favorite place for a post race feast, the Liberty Tree Tavern. For 2016 I'm doing Goofy and staying at POFQ with friends; like the others say, it doesn't matter that much as all the resorts cater to the marathon. But if I was made of money I'd probably stay at the Poly again.

I agree with the Epcot resort option if the expense is not a concern.

I have stayed at POFQ and it was great if you think that you will have sore legs afterward as it is so small, but keep in mind that the races start right outside of the resort, across the street from the entrance. Every time a corral starts, the fireworks go off. Light sleepers in your party who are not running will hate life as they are woken time and again (so says my wife, who refuses to stay here again during marathon weekend for this reason).

like everyone says slow way down take your time to rest and recover properly. The last thing you want is to make it worse and be out longer. I would say get some compression socks to aid in blood flow and that will help repair any possible damage.

For the Achilles pain - you really should talk to a sports physician. I changed my stride to go from a heel striker to a mid-foot striker a few years ago and it resulted in Achilles pain for about 18 months. The pain was minor, and worse after runs, but never bad enough to stop me from running. But what eventually made it go away completely was a 6 week break from running at my doctor's insistence. It stunk to stop for that long, but I wanted to push myself again and was afraid to do so with the Achilles.

Baloo in MI- I would say you should see a doctor to rule out any major injuries. Other than that it is hard to answer because of the tenderness part. The reason I say that is because I have tendinitis in both of my Achilles. For me, I need to run more and stay more active. If I take off 2 days in a row they hurt more. The activity keeps the blood flowing which helps me. But if you have an injury or something you need to rest it. This is why I say good see a doctor because they could issue an MRI if needed to rule out injury. Your definition of tenderness is why it is hard to come up with a suggestion as that is subjective.

As for the hotel options. I am tossing that around myself as well. I would like to think I should go cheap as I will be in the parks the whole time. But then I wonder if I will be in the parks the whole time if I am running a marathon so in that case I should go nicer. I am hoping to decide fairly soon to stop stressing about the decision. I know I can't go wrong either way I go. After all, it's Disney.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I get a little over the top planning any trip to WDW and stress a lot over my running...so needless to say the reassurance is much appreciated that the usual Disney magic holds true for marathon weekend.

Thankfully this won't be a problem, I travel with a family of people who want to cheer me on. They will be the ones dragging me to the starting line if history has proven anything :)

Or go nicer and go to the parks the whole time! :thumbsup2 Okay, I wouldn't recommend spending the entire day there on Friday or Saturday, but a few hours is generally okay.
