Marathon Weekend 2016

SO excited! My hubby and I signed up yesterday for the Disney Marathon in January! It will be his first marathon & my 3rd. I'm already looking at fun costumes. :) Can someone tell me (I'm not finding it on their website) how do we submit our race times for a corral assignment?

I also ordered us both the Marathon in Training shirt with Mickey on it - it'll be a fun surprise for him when it arrives! :)

My girls, 5 & 7 are signed up for the kids race on Saturday morning. Not sure which day we will arrive yet.

@arizonacolbys Woohoo! Proof of time submission is between May 28, 2015 and October 6, 2015; I think rD will post links on the website when submission time comes around. :)

I have a question for anyone who has done the 5k or 10k and the family reunion breakfast. It seems pretty pricey so I want to see if it is something I would want to sign up for or if it is more of a pass. I have read like two reviews online from a couple years ago.
My husband, his mom and my 3 year old daughter are not running. So they would be mono-railing over from the Contemporary to see me & Dad finish. It's likely we both will be in middle of the pack corral-wise and plan to make one or two character stops. So maybe a finish in the high 30's minutes if we make stops??
What time does Epcot normally open marathon weekend? I would try for a breakfast early at Akershus or Garden Grill, but realize that may be hard to get. At least I could go eat at the Land food court for breakfast right?
Would it be silly to spend $190 on the five of us for the breakfast in the tent post race if we can just go into Epcot to get a better atmosphere a little later? Since it's just the 5k its not like my family will be waiting hours for us to finish.

Maybe I've answered my own question. But I would really love to know when Epcot in the past is fully open on 5k mornings.

We were there the Sunday of Marathon weekend in 2014 - the park opened at 9 a.m. (can't remember if there was early morning or anything - I HIGHLY doubt it because of the marathon finish), and there were still oodles and oodles of runners coming through the park, so just be aware of that. Disney does a really great job of "lane switching" to create walkways for pedestrians in the parks while not really interrupting the runners.

All things being the same - I would do a meal at a restaurant in a park over the tent breakfast, just because I'm a little bit picky and I enjoy a nice atmosphere. Also, reviews on some of the food at runDisney events have been all over the place. Yeah, it's just breakfast ... but it's the most important meal of the day!!

No experience with any of the post-race breakfasts or retreats; hopefully someone else will be able to help you out with that question.

My group has gone to Epcot following the 5K each of the last two years and it has opened at 9:00. We have gone straight back to Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie in France to get a nice pastry and coffee to start the day and probably because the majority of the attractions in the World Showcase don't open until 11 AM it is relatively quiet. Not necessarily the place to go for a full breakfast, but there are definitely dining options available when the park opens.

EP will open at regular time, 9am. Akershus opens early for ADR's so that is a good choice. You hit Norway just after mile 1 so the path there going clockwise should be clear to go for pre-park ADR's by then, though the 10k could be more iffy (I have not run that course but I believe it starts similarly). During the half marathon the park opened before finish and CM's would direct people through breaks in runners. I have eaten at Akershus before and really liked breakfast - better than CRT even. If you hop online early and make the ADR it shouldn't be too hard to get. I actually didn't think Garden Grill had breakfast - but entirely possible I am wrong! There are also any of the monorail resort breakfasts available as well. I particularly liked O'hana during the princess half weekend.

I did the 5k breakfast princess weekend. It was something like 26 degrees with wind chill that day so the breakfast was perfect to run right into the tent and warm up. But, they only had outdoor (but private) port-o-johns so we still got stuck going outside. I will say the food didn't blow me away nor was there a large selection, there were 2 princesses (Rapunzel and Ariel), and their princes, each meeting separately, and they have communal large round tables that seat probably 8 people. They had the princess and the frog playing on TV's in the corners for the kids. It is a tent, after all, so there isn't a ton of ambiance they can really add. I don't think it is a must do at $50 head. That said, I don't regret it. But, I don't plan on doing it again either. It's biggest draw would be hanging out with the other runners.

Also, I'd add more time onto your projection to account for delays between corral starts, course congestion, and character lines. The post-race area is usually pretty festive too with characters and the dj playing for awhile so that may be worth sticking around for. My family that didn't run enjoys that aspect.

Now I am remembering the food we had - scrambled eggs, a sort of scalloped potatoes, French toast stick things, fruit and a dip, and I want to say sausage patties? They also had things like yogurt, coffee, oj. No mickey waffles - which I did find surprising.

Thanks for all the great feedback! This is why I love coming on these boards. I think we will skip paying for the tent breakfast and make a choice on where to eat (at a real sit down breakfast) come ADR time. Honestly if it were slightly cheaper, the tent buffet would be more appealing. But $30 for my 3 year old, I'd rather just do a character breakfast indoors.

And I didn't even think about heading back to a monorail resort but that makes a lot of sense too. I think my #1 choice would be Akershus but I'll have some backup plans at the ready on ADR morning. At least I know my toddler would survive on pre-packaged mini-muffins and applesauce pouches exclusively if I let her...she'll be fine for snacks.

I would vote Akershus - you'll have bling, so it makes it easier for you to take pictures with characters right away! But, that's just me!

Or at least a character breakfast of some kind.

Total newbie to this board and RunDisney. I'm registered for the half marathon...my first. I registered early as a DVC member and when I registered, I put myself in the slow corral because it will be my first and I will have no time to enter. I'm rethinking that decision now. Can I enter a 5k time? And is it too late to change my registration? I am running with a friend who will already have a half time and while we don't need to be in the same corral, I really don't want their to be hours between us either.

Thanks in advance!

You can try to email rD, but I think it may be too late. They don't take proof of time for the 5K since it's an un-timed fun run.

If your friend ends up in an earlier corral, he/she can drop back to run with you. You can move back corrals but never up corrals. :)

For the half marathon, I'm pretty sure the shortest race you can use for proof of time is a 10K.

And they used to give you a printed photo with Belle - instant race souvenir!

I think I saw that proof of time opens up in about month or so, you submit it after registration now (I think that started somewhat recently). It has to be a 10k or higher. For the Disney 5k corral they take your word on it. When I have submitted time, it has not matched what I originally listed as a finishing time during registration (I think I got a little overzealous!) and they placed me based on what I submitted. So, I think proof of time overrides that. The link should be under the runner information tab on the rundisney website.

Thank you! Don't have any 10k's on my schedule but maybe I need to find one. When I was going through the registration process I was just trying to get through it as fast as I could and I hadn't found any information on this before I registered.

Even if it isn't a great 10k time, it will help you move up corrals at least some and avoid the last corral bottleneck. It is definitely not necessary and I didn't have one for my first Disney race, but a good way to get your feet wet! Like @Ariel484 said I'm not sure you can now switch between the later corral times that don't require proof to update them, but most of those would be grouped together anyways probably as the last corral is usually anyone without a submitted time.

I am having a little bit of a boring hump day here at work guys lol. But I have a run planned for tonight so I am thinking about all of these races!

What is everyone's opinions on when to replace shoes? I know 300 miles is thrown around a lot. I am probably somewhere around 250 on my current ones. My old pair(s) were fine for shorter race training but I switched sizes when I did longer races to avoid losing the toenails I am very much attached to! I have mizuno wave inspire that I got when I started feeling slight shin splints when I went past 6 miles, for more support. I like the shoes but of course they are heavier. So first, I am considering buying a 2nd pair to rotate into training so I have 2 options. And second, I was wondering if I should try a little less support now that I am in better shape for distance?

I have no scientific evidence to support any of the decisions I make in this regard - but when my feet started feeling more tired or "hot" than they did the last run, I would start working in a second pair of shoes. If once I worked in the second pair of shoes, my feet didn't feel any relief on the originally pair - those become walking/non-running shoes and they're out of the training rotation.

That's at least what works for me. I currently have one pair that are my walking/will be my 5K shoes and then I have two pairs that are my distance shoes. I wear minimalist shoes (Inov-8s), but I'm going to be adding in another pair with a thicker sole when my training mileage gets up about 15 miles (the most I've done in my minimalists) and those will become my marathon shoes for Dopey.

Also, once I've run my race or training run, I immediately change into different shoes (either Sanuk flip flops, hard leather Reef flip flops or Chuck Taylors), and I notice that helps me determine if it's my shoes that are not cutting it or what.

As far as toenails go, I haven't lost one (yet!). But, I also get regular pedicures (every three weeks or so, and always a couple days before a race) and keep them cut back pretty short. I also haven't really had my toes pop through the toebox of my shoes, but I think that's a credit to the fabric that makes up my Inov-8s moreso than anything that I do.

Duh, I totally read your post wrong. :headache::headache: Thought you said you were signed up for the 5K...

As others have said, you need to run a 10K or longer at home and submit that when they post the link. But what I said before about dropping back corrals applies - your friend can drop back to run with you.

it doesn't have to be a 10K, it has to be AT LEAST a 10K. So a 15K, 10-miler, half marathon, etc. would work, too. 10Ks are hard to find where I live and each year I end up using a 10-miler time for proof.

I keep track of my mileage in a Google Doc, and once I hit 250-200 I start to really pay attention to how the shoes feel...if they start to feel off at all it's on to the next pair.

Sometimes I do make it to 300, but my most recent pair only got up to 175. That was a bummer.
