Marathon Training thread fore 8/1-8/7

Decaff, are you sure it was 108 minutes? Or was it an hour and 8 minutes (68 minutes)? Just wondered.

Thanks Trola:
You are so right!! I was so hot and tired that i misread my pedometer. I did 3.63 miles in 68 minutes. Good news is that makes it 18.73 minute miles. I thought I was really putting in the minutes. LOL , need to pay attention!

Hi everyone

I just have time for a quick post tonight. I started my cros training today. I did 35 min. on our airdyne bike and boy did I feel out of shape. I have walked 8 miles at 15 min/mile and wasn't as tired afterwards, so I guess it just goes to show how cross training is important. So now I have gotten in 1 of my walk days and 1 cross training day so far this week.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Cheryl :sunny:

Hi all...I walked yet again today, my legs are just not feeling right......Soooooooooooo.
I walked fast at 3.8 MPH and did that for 60 minutes.I managed to go 3.8 miles!

Anyway.......Besides trola, I am still wondering if you are all planning to do the 1/2 distance before the actual day?

Any thoughts?

I did 1.25 miles this evneing- walking up and down the very steep streets in the neighborhood I live in. Did it in 29 mins ! Very slow.... but it's the hills! I was out shopping with my mom all afternoon too , so I am pooped!

Cheryl- I'll bet you were moving those little legs of yours alot faster then when you walk! Good for you for starting the cross training.

decaff- 3.68 mile sin 68 minutes is a great pace! I wish I could go that fast. As for morning foods. Why don't you try a protein shake? Or something that is not greasy or too heavy? That's usually what I do- because my tummy gets upset if I eat ion the morning too.

Tw1nsmom- YEAH FOR YOU!!!! I could not walk in the humidity.... it's a good thing that tis amarthon is in January- otherwise I don't think I'd be there! I've been thinking about the half as an annual event myself. As a matter of fact, i was talking to the girl that cuts my hair about it today. I really want to keep in shape- even though I'm terribly overweight, I feel so good physically that I want to keep this workout going. I think the only way I'll do it is if I continue to walk in marathons... on vacations.... like Beth!

Beth- I am so proud of you for getting up early and walking that long! I've thought about joining the 1000 minute threadc- but everytime I join a challenge thread - I do so bad! So- I'm just gonna read and see how everyone's doing!

Rene- I do what my trainer tells me to do- if she wants me to walk 13.1 miles before the half, I will....I have no mind when it comes to that!! I am but a robot- push my buttons and I will do what I am told (unless it's my DH telling me to do somethign- now that's a whole other story!!!) AS far as buddying up.... I think we're all gonna start up together and just go from there. Don't worry about being left behind. This is a good size group and there will be all kind of speeds available. Beth and I are going to make sure that no one is left behind. Of course.... we'll have to DRASTICALLY slow our pace to accomadate those laggers... but, someone must mnake the sacrifice... and Beth and I ahve voluteered for this service... right Beth?!?!?!

Ashley- thanks for the website- and good for you for getting those kids out no matter how they complain!!!

Baileymouse- I think about the same thing as you with the jiggly skin! I've thought about using spandex shorts (bicycle shorts) - wouldn't taht help??? I'm having a hard time finding large size clothes that I can wear to walk in that will wick away the moisture from my body!

And ... to whoever asked.... I am very concerned about how I look at the marathon.... i want to be stylin' !!!!

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Q- I'm tired, sick or busy and my schedule says it's a hard day?
A- Always err on the side of rest and reduce the distance or take the day off.
(OK- NOW I'M IN REAL TROUBLE.... is anyone with me on that?!?!?)

Have a good day tomorrow everybody!!

Well I just wanted to let you guys know that this board and you supporters got me out the door last night. We had supper and I intended to go and put on my shoes right away. Well I stopped at the computer, checked the DIS boards, played some Bespelled and then almost fell asleep (I only slept about 4 hours the night before). I went and laid down and slept for 15 minutes. When I woke up I had two choices..1) put on my shoes and walk or 2) put on my jammies and call it a day.

Since I have my marathon training schedule sitting on the table at home I went and looked at it and then put on my shoes. Went to the basement and started walking. After 14 minutes my treadmill started the jerking thing again. I shut if off and headed right out the door to do some street walking (not what you're thinking). Before I knew it a half an hour had passed and I was home and not really tired but full of energy.

I had my bowl of cereal and then proceeded to do some housework:crazy:

Went to bed after eleven and woke up before my alarm went off at six.

Maybe there really is something to all this exercise. Karebear1, I too am heavy and really hope to do this thing. I would hate for my three sisters to have Donald medals and all I get is a picture of them.

Thanks guys!!!:wave2:

The hardes step is the first one out the door! I have to do the same mind games. You would think at my age I could tell myself to dothings and I would. No, it is always a battle. Hang in there and You will be fit, trim and wearing a medal in January!!! I have a Special Ed Intern that I work with nmed Katheryn Dunlop who is from London, ontanio. Small World!!

One foot in front of the other!! Outside walking goes much faster than inside walking, keep it up!!

Good morning everyone!!

Wow!! You guys are just amazing....I love reading these posts - and I'll say it again - I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU!!

Plan on doing something tonight, as long as the weather holds out....probably 4-5 miles like we did last Wed. Ended up not doing a "real" training walk this past weekend - went to visit some friends w/ 6 yo twins, so time was spent chasing them around. Atleast it was some exercise.

Hope everyone is doing well.....

Will consider the 1/2 marathon every year idea (will be alot easier once I move down to Orlando), but as others have said - I need to survive this one first :D

As for the fashion end of things...I plan to wear leggings and a cool max shirt. I have been training in leggings, and I haven't had to worry about any chaffing. I was also told by one of the people at the running store (where I bought my shoes), that leggings are good for the winter especially, as they keep your muscles warm. I will probably end up getting one of the light jackets that runners use, to start out with then tie it around my waist as I get warmer. I plan to have gloves/mittens to start with. I heard that it was VERY cold at the start of the race this year.

Ok - should go back to work now....have a great day!

Hi Everyone and Welcome Renee!

I forget to post on the weekly training thread, but I try to post on the daily exercise threads. I am heading over to the gym for my second run/walk of this week. Monday was 3.5 miles, today should be 4.0 (we'll see!).

This is so exciting, we're all here, hanging in there, getting ready:cheer2:

OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS!!!

I have to tell you what happened to me this morning. I didn't have any clean clothes to wear this morning- and I have an appointment I need to be at in an hour. So- 2 summers ago I bought some capri's and stuff on clearance- thinking of course taht I could fit into them by last summer..... WRONG! When I bought these I was wearing a size 24. Well- I thought I try the smaller size clothes on today because I was desperate becuase I had nothing to wear. Well.....

THEY FIT!! I fit into a size 18-20 capri's!!! I know that's still a very large size, but I haven't worn an 18-20 in over 14 years! The funny part about it is I looked in the mirror to see how they looked (because even though you can zip them up doen't mean they look good) and I could actually see how much weight I've lost! I looked thinner! Can you believe it???? I am soooooo excited- and had to share with all my friends!

Now... I'm off to start my low carbing for the next 2 weeks- thanks to the inspiration of fitting into a size 18-20!

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

That's awsome, Karebear:Pinkbounc :bounce:

I think this calls for some pics::yes::

Well I made it to the gym and did better than expected! 4.5 miles in 61 minutes (some running, some walking and some hills).

4.7 miles total (including cool down).

I'm psyched

I tryed something new today on the treadmill..........
I covered the miles LCD witha towel so I could never see what i was up to.....cause once I get to another mile, I always consider quitting! lol.........
So the only LCD I could see was the minutes........being that I am in the 1000 minutes in august I decided to run 10 minutes then walk for 2 and so one till I reached 60 minutes...........
I did it and did 5.9 miles!
I think this will be my new tech.

the best aprt was afetr I was done, I jumped in my pool clothes and everything!

till tomorrow

renee

Congratulations Karen!! That must have felt wonderful to realize how far you've come.

I didn't get in a full hour of walking as planned, but I did do about 35 minutes after DH got home. It felt good to not totally blow of my committment to exercise (as I would usually do:rolleyes: ).

I'm going to have to start looking for some leggings to walk in. I like the idea of no chafing or shorts riding up.

Woo-Hoo, Karen! Weigh to GO!! I love a good positive note to start and end my day. You guys are doing GREAT!!

I was shopping with my mom over the river (that'd be in the States :) ) so got some strolling in down the malls and back and forth to the car. Picked up a couple of things for school and a skort for my youngest. Came home, went to the Teacher's Store and picked up
more school stuff. Walked after supper and called it a day.

I haven't been posting every day on the 1000 minute thread. I think that I'll make it easy and post only once or twice a week. BUT, so far so good! ;)

Today I did 10 minutes of knee things (and of course now my knee hurts  ) and did 40 minutes at Curves. Added to the 75 minutes for the earliest part of the week that puts me at 125-right on target (well, almost). I can do this, I know I can!

Remember: Just put one foot in front of the other 'cause slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!

Hi All! I have been off the wagon for a while but plan to get back on tomorrow am and will hopefully let you know how I did. I have been helping my sister move (only 1 1/2 miles away) ans staying there most nights as her husband works 12 hour shifts starting at 7pm and my sister is still getting used to being in a house without others around. Only problem is her cable and phone are not hooked up yet (takes at least 2 weeks when making an appt and then they don't show) so I have no access to a computer when I am there. Anyway, I am home tonight and plan to walk tomorrow am. The humidity will determine how long it has been horrible for the last week. Sorry to everyone that I miss with a reply but after a few days away I am having a hard time catching up. I hope evryone has a great training week! Congrats to all those who are meeting or exceeding their goals! Lets make this a yearly event.
When I do walk, I use biker shorts (also called comphresion shorts I believe), they stay in place, keep my thighs from jiggling and I don't chaffe. I got my mom and sister wearing them too. I will probly wear a long version of these for the marathon.

Go Karen Go! It is wonderful to get into smaller clothes isn't it.

Wow- I haven't been here in a couple of days and I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed with everyone!

Karen - WOOHOO - HOORAY and HALLELUIAH - what a very pleasant surprise for you! I hear ya on that being a good motivator, too.

Okay - I want to go take a look at the 1,000 minute challenge so here's my quick update on the knee. Therapist said I still have good motion range and basically gave me some very basic exercises to strengthen the muscles along side the knee and to get the muscles into their correct timing again (using them together). I can tell you that he knew where to put some pressure and then ask if it hurt - yes - it did - actually hurt more than I thought it did - thank goodness he won't be doing that often. He was very hopeful that it will take 4-8 weeks and should be much better. I am sure that you understand when I say that it feels better "already" just knowing that walking and Curves is still allowed and I am not doing any damage ::yes::

I walked 4 miles Monday and 2 yesterday and Curves - took today off and tomorrow plan to be up and walking and Curves tomorrow after work.

Also, someone at work today said she wants to lose 10 lbs (same as me) so we are going to "buddy" up there for some accountability and with my DIS buddy group and you guys - I just keep thinking - YES - I can get these stinking 10 lbs off by Oct 1!

Hey- I just remembered that Office Depot had a customer appreciation day today (including lunch) they had soooooooooooooo many desserts that looked sooooooooooooo good - but I remembered that I was accountable, so I had veggies and a couple finger sandwiches took off most of the bread and a very small, tiny piece of oatmeal granola cake (I would like the recipe if any one has one - it was awesome, kind of the consistency of bread pudding with caramel and dark choc drizzled) Anyway, I think that my reward for being good was that I won a doorprize! A really nice round cooler with some outside pouches :teeth:

Okay - keep up the good work - I will be seeing anyone else who tmills early in the AM - I am back on schedule again !

Since I did a short walk yesterday instead of the hour walk that was on my schedule, I did my hour walk today. Actually it was a little more than an hour. I was able to walk 4.35 miles at a 16.55 minute/mile pace.

I wore my new capri walking/running pants. The fit like bike shorts but come to the knee. They're not the greatest quality, but the were on sale at Kmart for $7. They felt better than the shorts I had been wearing and better yet they were size XL. Slowly, but surely, I'm inching out of the plus sizes into the regular sizes. When I started this journey I was wearing 2XL.

ok -- i've been neglecting my WISH board -- so sorry! BUT i've been a bigtime cruise board junkie -- check out my siggie!! :boat:

anyhow -- i'm struggling with the whole mindset this week - but just keep telling myself this is the price I pay for slacking for a couple to three weeks -- so today I forced my sleepy buns out of bed before 8 a.m. :rolleyes1 and hit the path. My DN has been MIA a couple three weeks too and I miss her pushing me. anyhoo -- I did my routine for today -- walk 5 mins - jog 30 mins - walk 5 mins and 4 sprint drills. it was really hard to get going, but I did it. then 10 mins yoga when I got home

KAREN!!!:jumping1: how awesome for you! I'm very impressed with ALL of you that our seeing your size dwindle away -- what inspiration that is to read. My jeans/jean shorts have gotten toooo snug and i'm constantly talking to myself all day long that this is important and I will accomplish the weight loss again. been there, done that, it WILL HAPPEN!:cool2:

you guys -- talking about what you're wearing already!! he he he LOL!!!! ok i admit, I'm thinking about which fabulous WDW restaurant I want to eat at! :rotfl: I'm thinking Narcosses' for friday night -- no kids -- seafood -- oh yeaa! mom??

Good morning all!

I attempted to walk yesterday....Colette and I were out on the road, and looking at the sky changed our plans to shorten our walk. We managed not even a whopping 3/4 mile (we were btwn 1/2 and 3/4)....the sky opened up and it started poring!! Then I went home, and didn't want to turn on the treadmill due to the lightning.

Oh well, we're going to try again today - as long as the weather holds out. We have to miss our Saturday morning walk as we're going to the Women of Faith conference in DC.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Hi guys!

Another MIA poster! I've been getting all my runs in. Did a long run of 12 miles last Saturday and I'm scheduled to run a 5 mile race this Sat. Someone has to bring up the rear, just so they know the race is over! :p Still struggling with losing this 20-30 pounds. I know running would be soooooo much easier if I did. This 41 year old body just doesn't want to cooperate. I finally started logging all of my food into fitday.com. One thing I quickly realized was that my weekends were killing me. Whatever progress I made M-F was lost after S/S.
Unlike some people :worship:, I'm still fitting into the same size. Congrats to all the "losers" out there!

2 quick answers(although a day late/dolar short....):

I do plan to run the distance before hand. Right now I'm planning to get in a 13 and 14 mile run before the middle of Sept. because I'm doing the Phila. Distance Run on 9/19 (another half marathon.)

I have no idea what I'm wearing! I'm lucky I find something presentable to wear each day! :p

Train well!!!
