I have always wanted to do a half marathon and this year, I really think I'm going to do it. I've been going to the gym four to five nights a week and building up my speed and incline on the treadmill and on the weekends while it's daylight running on trails. The one I'm interested in is in September. I was just curious to people who run marathons, what do you love most about running a marathon? Is there anything you dislike? Are there any tips I should know? Thanks so much for any help!

I have run half marathons, and have trained for a marathon (got a stress fracture in my foot several weeks before and was unable to run it). I just love running in general, I have been doing it for over 20 years.

Build up slowly, September is still a long time away. Don't do too many real long runs in training, you will wear your body out. And your body needs fuel for long runs - the energy gels may not be the most tasty things in the world, but they do work good. When I do long runs, I stick a gel pack and a bottle of water in my mailbox, and make sure they halfway point of my run goes by my house so I can just grab them and don't have to stop.

You sound exactly like me! Not sure when i can do my first as life is crazy, but i AM ready! (i think!?! ;) )

I've found alot of help from Runners World Magazine. They also have a great website, runnersworld.com, that you can check out.

The one tip I'll give you is no matter what distance you decide on, respect that distance. Make sure you train properly for it.

If you need training programs, there are some good ones at halhigdon and coolrunning web sites.

The thing I love the most is finishing!

Although, I think I’ve had “PRD” (post race depression) after every marathon I’ve run. For several months you’re looking toward that race and you feel kind of empty when it’s over!

There is always a feeling of accomplishment, but I’m always humbled seeing some of the other runners out on the course. I’ve several runners in their 70’s and people with disabilities. Including a guy with a prosthetic leg!

When I ran my first marathon, I assumed it would be my only marathon, but I’ve run one per year since 1997.

It takes a lot of time to train. That’s the hardest part for me.
