we are not staying here or on the plan but would love to visit the resort. would this be nice but inexpensive place to grab a bite for lunch or dinner?

We hopped over from AK to check out the place and had lunch there. Alot of food to choose from but we shared a fried shrimp plate which was a mistake, very greasy and gummy shrimp. We also shared the zebra domes, they are ok...I dont know what the hype is all about....

Huge sitting area there....and you can sit out by the pool too

It is counter service, so it is relatively inexpensive. Mara is kind of plain so you'd have much better views if you find a nice area outside to have your lunch-lots of shady tables around. My family loves the zebra domes-there is just something very festive about having those at AKL! The resort is very beautiful and very worth wandering around inside and out. There are many viewing areas to see the animals, as well. Enjoy!

I love Mara-it has one of my favorite foods in the World-Butternut Squash Soup. They also have it at Boma's, but I prefer Maras (don't know why). A bowl of that soup, some Pita chips, and zebra domes for dessert. My mouth is watering now!

Yes it is inexpensive and has regular food, like chips and hamburgers there.

:goodvibes

That's really disappointing about the shrimp plate. It was my favorite thing on our last trip. When were you there? I hope it's good again next month!!! I think Zebra Domes are good, but definitely not the best dessert from Boma/Mara by a long shot IMHO. Most people just gush about them, and they are good, but not my fave.

We were there Dec 06...I even had to wait while they made the shrimp up for me....I think they were pre-packed frozen kind.

Somebody please tell me what a zebra dome is. I'll be there in NOV..........Please tell me

They are little bon bons...white cake with a creamy kahlua type cream on top covered with white chocolate and drizzled with chocolate. I was glad that I got the chance to try them because they are talked about all over the board but we were not dining at Boma (which is where they are served) but stumbled on them in the cooler cases at Mara

Even if you are not an "adventurous" eater - it's delicious!

It comes in a bread bowl - tastes kind of like a sweet/spicy beef stew. It was my absolute favorite thing I ate at Mara the whole week we were there.

And I don't get the fuss about zebra domes either. They were OK - but there were lots of other desserts there I liked better.

I started a thread on this back in April. I at first wanted to eat at Boma, but the kids kept adding places they wanted to try. I decided to eat lunch in AK (hopefully at the CS side of the new Yak and Yeti), then head to AKL after the parade. Not having an adr will mean we can take our time and tour the lodge then eat at Mara when we get hungry. I also want to hear the African Story Teller. I've been thinking about that bread bowl and African stew for months! And I have to try zebra domes just because I've heard so much about them!
