Maps!

I can't seem to find any detailed maps of Disney property. We're renting a car and planning to drive ourselves around some of the time to avoid waiting for buses. But how do you get back and forth from resorts to parks and restaurants and such? I'm probably just being search-impaired, but I'd appreciate any links or leads to Disney street maps.

The best map we ever got was a complimentary one from DVC (maybe from the kiosk where they sell), but it's a few years old. Has that new highway been completed yet? Does it change any of the other roads' access? We'll be driving a lot, too, so I'm interested in a good map!

I wouldn't be too concerned about maps for driving around Disney property.

Ususally my Dad does the driving but in May my mother and I went by ourselves. I was a little concerned about finding our way around, but it was quite simple.

There are rather large signs pointing out which lanes go where and when to exit.

also on the back side of your resort map they give you at check-in has a great map as well.

I have to diagree, navigating around WDW can be confusing. Getting there is easy, but navigating around the park itself is a pain. The signs are not always well marked, and come up suddenly. Some places are reasoably well marked, but the marking system isn't consistent.
To get to the Monorail resorts, you have to go into the MK parking lot and exit a special exit on the far right. It is odd, and doesn't look like the right way to go (especially if there are buses going that way, as it looks like a bus access only road.)

I'd consider printing Google or Mapquest map. I've also learned that the maps the car rental places give are not always accurate either. One we had was wildly distorted. It's like the whole area wants you stay on a certain route - so they leave the others off the map, or disort them ot make them look longer. We actually discovered a few great ways to get around Orlando that were all but hidden.

I'm interested in the new highway, too. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of more info on it. I'm making myself look like this --> trying to figure out if it'll help make our drive a little shorter.

I think it is easier to follow the signs than it is to follow a map. Sometimes, as a newbie, you'll miss a turn or something...but even so, there will be signs to get you back on track.

Once you know where you are going, it is all very simple.

I would use Disney transportation whenever possible. I have been there 15 or so times, always with a car, however only really use the car for MCO to WDw and back, resort hopping, DtD and Universal. Other than that I use Disney transportation whenever I can.

I drive a lot back home, never get lost, can follow directions easily, read a map well. Even now, I sometimes get mixed up there at the World. Signage is minimal. And you do sort of have to know your way around some to make sense of it. It is very easy to pass your exit, etc.

The biggest problem with getting around Disney property if you are not familiar with it especially between hotels is knowing how Disney groups the hotels by location. Many times the signs will say EPCOT resorts and not list which actual ones they are talking about until the last minute.That being said un less we need a car (leaving property or are driving between a number of resorts at one time) we rarely take our car out from the hotel. Disney transportation may take a little extra time but many times it doesn't unless you are moving between hotels.

In fact when we moved from AK to MGM to EPCOT one day half of our group took a car and half took buses. Those riding the bus actually got inside the parks first- about 10 minutes ahead of time even having to wait for the bus. By the time you get out to your car- head out the parking lot- move to your next location- and get to the next gate- it takes longer than just waiting for a bus.

I dare not tell you how we drove into MK and out of MK and into MK and out of MK and finally back in ... and then CORRECTLY got into the lane to go to the Polynesian Resort! Good luck on getting the maps ... just posting that those who are directionally impaired (like me) are better off using the WDW transportation.

But next year we will be driving all over Orlando as we try to make it from WDW over to the DARK SIDE (US/IOA).
