Man Charged For Allegedly Stomping Geese
Rhode Island Resident Facing Animal Cruelty Charges

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A man accused of stomping a family of geese to death over the weekend was in an Attleboro courtroom Monday.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that John Sanders, 33, of North Kingstown, R.I., was charged with six felony counts of animal cruelty.

"I am not a expert in geese and goslings, but I would imagine that a one-week-old or a two-week-old gosling can't be very threatening," said Attleboro Police Sgt. James Keane.

Sanders is accused of stomping to death five goslings and their mother at the Texas Instruments campus in Attleboro. Police said the industrial engineer was angry that the mother goose hissed at him as he walked across the lawn.

"It was fairly gruesome scene. The deceased goslings were spread over an area of approximately a football field," said Keane. "The goose raised up and hissed at him. He became startled, he tried to frighten the goose away, and when he did, he slipped and fell."

After slipping on goose droppings, Sanders allegedly kicked the goose and jumped up and down on the goslings until they were all dead.

The injured mother goose was captured and later euthanized.

A photographer saw the mother goose after the attack.

"(Police) showed me the broken leg, it was compound fracture -- the bone was sticking out. The whole back leg looked like it was ripped apart. I said, 'This is an extensive injury, and I don’t know how any animal could recover from that kind of injury,'" said photographer Mark Stockwell.

Sanders, who was arrested at the scene, told police he killed the geese.

Texas Instruments employees said they are shocked by the incident.

"They do hiss sometimes, but if you don't argue with them, just walk away, they are not going to chase you," said Texas Instruments employee Christina Koluch.

Sanders was freed on $1,000 bail and will return to court May 23.

Honestly, I hope he does some jail time. The worst violent offenders usually start out by hurting baby animals...what a sicko.

Actually, I think he should be forced to wear a shirt that says "I'm the man who stomped the 2 week old baby geese to death" everywhere he goes...

Sorry for the rant. Sometimes, people just make me sick.

These are not the geese he killed , but a similiar family of geese I saw in my town last year. Just to give an idea of what he killed...The babies he killed were probably a little younger than the little ones in my photo...

Your title is just a little off though. Attleboro is in MA, which is where this happened, but the jerk is from RI. We see the geese all the time around town, either over near Texas Instruments where this happened or by CVS where they cross the street to get to the pond. Traffic stops when they cross the street. I'm sure some people get annoyed, but I think for the most part, when we see them, it just makes us stop and slow down and enjoy the simple things in life for a little while.

Then this idiot does this!

Geese can be aggresive, especially when protecting their young. They are strong and are capable of breaking the leg of an adult human. However, it is also true that if you ignore the hissing adult, they usually will stop bothering you, eventually. I can't imagine harming a goose with goslings unless I truly felt I was in danger of physical harm, and even so, 2 week old goslings pose no threat to a human. This guy was way over the top and should be prosecuted for cruelty to animals.

Having raised domestic geese, there are certainly ways to handle that type of situaton that would cause no permanent harm to the mother goose, and harming the goslings was inexcusable.

:sad2: Some people are idiots! :confused3 Though I don't see how people who eat duck, veal, and whatever else can be outraged at this yet still eat what they do. :confused3

I think it's more of the matter that the animal suffered. I like chicken..it's the only bird I eat. I can't stand hearing about the supposed KFC-cruelty stories or anything...ignorance is bliss for me, because I'm such an animal lover (but still eat a lot of chicken). Killing animals for food is one thing. Any other reaons: whether for sport, just being cruel, etc is unacceptable to me.

I feel so bad. :(

I'm not a fan of Canadian geese (or Canada geese, if you prefer), but they don't deserve to be stomped to death.

I think the t-shirt idea is brilliant!

He got mad because one was protecting it's little ones and went after him. So he got back by kicking the mother (that's now dead) and some of her little ones. He stayed in jail, couldn't raise the $600 bail. I'm sure he'll get his stomping.

What a total wuss, fearing for his life over a goose and her babies?

Yes, he should definitely be prosecuted for anuimal cruelty.

What????? :earseek:

I find that VERY hard to believe. I've been bitten by geese and while it hurts, I doubt they are powerful enough to break a leg bone. Perhaps a little finger but not a leg bone.

A very BIG ::yes::

What the *&)%$$# is wrong with people??

Toss his sick butt in jail and let the other inmates stomp on him for a while. See how he likes it.

Sorry, but I am an animal lover, and anyone who displays such extreme hatred & anger deserves to be removed from society before he does this to a human.

It isn't the bite, it's the wings, if they hit the knee just right, with the right force...

I know that an adult goose can nip very painfully. I can understand if he felt that he was in danger from the female goose. What I don't understand is why he felt compelled to kill goslings that were 2 weeks old or younger.

This makes me very sad :(

No excuse whatsoever. I say they gather about 50 of those geese and let them go at him :magnify:

Now why didn't Hitchcock think of that?! ;)

Seriously, why couldnt that jerk JUST WALK AWAY? When those geese hiss at me, I just walk away. I certainly don't go after them or their goslings.
