Passenger Vanishes From Cruise Ship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 26) - A 54-year-old passenger vanished as a ship returned home from a five-day cruise to the Bahamas, and the Coast Guard launched a search.

A patrol boat and a helicopter crew searched more than 340 square miles of ocean Friday for Glen Sherridan of Richmond, Va. His wife reported him missing to officers of the cruise ship Celebration when she could not find him several hours after the ship docked Thursday.

The Coast Guard received a missing persons report soon after the ship's crew conducted a full search to make sure Sherridan wasn't still on board.

The wife said her husband was an early riser and might have fallen overboard as early as 4 a.m., Petty Officer Bobby Nash said. He said the ship then would have been about 13 miles off the Florida coast.

Nash said the Coast Guard would decide later Friday whether to continue the search, conducted by a patrol boat from Jacksonville and a helicopter crew from Savannah, Ga.

The Carnival ship, which can carry nearly 1,500 passengers, left Jacksonville with a fresh load of Bahamas-bound passengers later Thursday.

She couldn't find him several HOURS (!!) after the ship DOCKED (!!) ??????

wow, that is scary! please let us know if you hear more.

I wonder how can somebody fall overboard?
:earseek:

I wonder how can somebody fall overboard?

When I was 11 my family sailed to europe on the MS Europa, a German liner.

We hit a hurricane so it was quite rough. They strung "lifelines" all over the outside so you could hold on to if you were crazy enough to go outside.

Well, Boys will be Boys.....

A bunch of us organized a game where we would go out on the wet, slippery deck and "ski". We would run as fast as we can then slide on the deck and grab onto the lifeline.

Being a pipsqueak, I went under the lifeline and hit the railing.. I remember my momentum carried me 1/2 over the railing and I was looking down at the water.

I still get the "heebie-jeebies" whenever I think of this.

How can you fall over?

Doing something really stupid.

Jim

PS: Thank you, Guardian Angel.

I think it sound kinda fishy.....if it was truly an accident I feel sorry for the family but is seems so unlikely that one would just fall overboard while walking on deck. And why did she not report him missing sooner.

I wonder if they had a veranda cabin....not to be a cynic (sp?) but maybe she gave him a shove....

Glad we're not alone in being skeptical. Not that he was an early riser and may have "gotten up" as early as 4:00 a.m., but might have "fallen overboard" at that time. the phrasing was just odd to us.

Plus most people if they commited suicide would leave a note or something. If my husband was missing, I wouldn't wait until we got into port.

So what are you guys saying, that she killed him??!!! :earseek: ;)

Hi neighbor!

Who, us? Only that I'm a suspicious person it seems.... :earboy2:

My prayers go out to the family. Either way, this woman needs 'em and then some.

I don't know how I feel on this one! I can't picture anyone committing suicide or murder on a cruise, but you never know. If I woke up to find my husband missing I really don't think I would report it right away. I would assume he went for a walk while to let me sleep in. I know if I wake up before my husband (which I know I will) I plan on exploring the ship to keep from making noise in the stateroom. I will make sure to leave a note now!

Maybe he was trying to swim to the Disney Boat.....ok ok...not funny....sorry. I am with you all that says it sounds a little funny. Whether he had help falling over or not....still seems a little weird.

We saw a note about this on CNN while on board the Wonder...scary!
Falling overboard does happen by accident sometimes. I have a friend who works on a cruise ship (not Disney), and she said that a crew member was once sitting on a railing and fell overboard. No one saw her, but they managed to figure it out (found her jacket by the rail or something). They turned the ship around and were able to find her. She said that she was trying to keep afloat and was ready to give up until she saw the ship turn back. Then she knew she just had to keep going until they found her. The ship was late to its next port, and can you believe some passengers actually complained about having had to go back?!

I can't believe anyone could complain about turning back. Did they know why they had to turn back?

When I read this I was aslo skeptical. But in a totally different way. The though crossed my mind that he was fine, had quickly, unnoticed slipped off the ship and she would collect on life insurance after whatever the wait time was. They would then meet up in a paradise somewhere and live "happily" ever after.....the thought of murder never crossed my mind.......

We are all so different,

I was always nervous about the idea of verandas when the kids were little because I was fearful they would accidently climb up and lean over to far
when I wasn't looking.

I know of a family living near me who was staying at an Embassy Suites while on a trip with several family members. While all of the family members were in the hall 'chatting' with one another this 4 year old boy climbed up and fell over the rail that goes around that looks down on the atrium. The boy fell over 10 stories and died immediately. This happened with LOTS of relatives standing right in the area! I guess with so many people around everyone thought someone was watching the kids (or they just never imagined this would happen).
