Today marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the Start of the Apollo 11 Moon Misson. They blasted off on July 16 1969, landed and walked on the Moon July 20 1969, and safely returned to earth on July 24 1969.

I was eleven years old when this happened and it was a very exciting time. Just looking up at the moon and knowing there was two people walking on the surface. When Neil Armstrong made his first step on the moon my neighborhood was like the fourth of July all over again. Fireworks all over the place. I will never forget that day, Very good day for America.

I was 9 years old, and in a Howard Johnson's motel, somewhere in Florida, on vacation with my family. We were watching a blurry black and white TV in the motel room. I fell asleep sometime around midnight, but I remember my dad waking us up around 3 am to tell us that we had landed on the moon!!

What an exciting, historical time that was!

I was just thinking about this the other day when I heard about the 40th anniversary.

I was 6. My grandparents came over and the whole family watched it on television. I remember being bored and I tried to wander off to play. My grandmother told me to settle down and watch because this was history and when I was older, I'd always remember this.

Nana was right. ;)

Boy Scout Camp! I was 14 years old and one of the scout masters brought out a small television set that he hooked up to a generator. We all huddled around that night watching events unfold. I still recall glancing up at the Moon and getting shivers and goosebumps: just like right now!

I was just a glimmer in my father's eye.

I was 3 months old. No clue where I was.

I wasn't even thought about, yet. My mom was 19 and wouldn't meet my dad for another 6 years. They didn't have me until 1978.

I was 15yo.
Well I do not remember where I was on July 16th OR July 24th but on July 20th I was babysitting a family with allot of kiddos...I just remember soooo wanting to watch the "WALK" while the kiddos INSISTED on running around outside. After-all it was summer and they were playing all kinds of kid games...I finally told all of them to COME INSIDE....and we all watched the "WALK"!!! :goodvibes

I was in utero probably making my mother miserable. I was born two weeks later.

I was 8 1/2 years old and on a family vacation in West Dennis on Cape Cod. I vividly remember sitting with my family in the little cottage watching the little black and white tv and trying to keep my eyes open long enough so I wouldn't miss out. I also remember, at some point in our vacation, going to the beach at night for a walk and looking up at the moon / sky trying to see if I could see any activity. :rotfl: DH and I are still fascinated by the space program and all that has come from it.

Same thing for me, except I was 8, and it was my Dad who made us watch! :3dglasses

Yep, your Nana and my Dad were right, we remember. :cool2:

I was REALLY not even thought of.

My mom was 9 and my dad was like .. 6 or something.

Hmm. Maybe the original poster needs to rephrase his question thusly:

"To all people reading this thread, who were actually LIVING on this date 40 years ago, and whom were also cognizant of his or her surroundings and also have some memory of the historical event in question, please tell us where you were and what you recall. Dead people need not respond".

Sorry, just seems like a waste of space, time, etc., to tell us you were dead or an infant.

I was 8, and we all watched it in the family room. I was just awed by it.

And a funny story--my grandma had died the May before the moon landing. My younger sisters were 3 & 4 at the time. When we watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon, my 3 yr old sister asked "where's grandma?". She thought that's where heaven was!

I wasn't quite 3 years old at that time, so I have no idea.

I had a similar conversation once with an old boss. I used to kid him about how much older he was. He asked where I was when Kennedy was shot. He was in kindergarten at the time. I then broke the news to him that I still hadn't been born until 3 years after Kennedy was shot. :scared1: He wasn't too pleased with me. ;)

What? :lmao:
