Mallomars Cookies!!!

Mallomars were my very favorite cookie growing up. For anyone who is not familiar with this bit of chocolatey goodness it is a graham cracker bottom, topped with marshmallow and enrobed in rich dark chocolate. These cookies are incredibly irresistable and taste like a S'more. As the chocolate is real, it melts very easily. Most grocery stores, if they carry them at all only carry them in the cooler months.

I grew up in Long Island NY, and our local store always advertised when Mallomar's were back on the shelves. I now live in North Carolina and they are very hard to find.

I was very surprised when I saw them in Walmart this afternoon. I bought a box and brought them to Mom, who is in a rehab hospital for awhile and we ate the entire box in one sitting, laughing and reminiscing all the while.

Mallomars were the cookie that Mom always bought us if she had to take us grocery shopping. It was a bribe, if you will, to encourage us to behave in the store. With 5 of us, the box didn't go very far. We both enjoyed having more than one or two today.

Loved Mallomars! They do sell them here in Florida in Publix -- from November to February. The box I remember growing up had 2 thin brown cardboard boxes inside with a neat row of Mallomars in there. Now they are in 1 white box with a plastic tray.

Odd thing to remember, isn't it?

Saw them at Costco a month or so ago. Of course DS had no idea what they were.... Think I'll stick some in his Christmas stocking since it has all his favorite food groups - chocolate, marshmallow, and cookie

Mallomars [3] are produced seasonally at Nabisco. A circle of Graham cracker is covered with a puff of extruded marshmallow, then "enrobed" in dark chocolate, which forms a hard shell. Mallomars were introduced to the public in 1913. Because Mallomars melt easily in summer temperatures, they can become difficult to find during the summer: they are generally available from early October through April. Devoted eaters of the cookie have been known to stock up during winter months and keep them refrigerated over the summer. Seventy percent of all Mallomars sold are sold in metropolitan New York.

In an episode of Roseanne, Roseanne Connor (Roseanne Barr) discovers a box of Mallomars as she is just beginning a diet. In a 1991 episode entitled "Home Ec" Roseanne takes Darlene's Home Ec class on an educational shopping trip to the supermarket and the patron ahead of them in the check-out line is buying vodka, mallomars and a TV Guide. "I'm thinking single, and staying that way" Roseanne comments to the girls in reference to the pathetic gentleman.

Mallomars are mentioned in The Sopranos episode, "Big Girls Don't Cry." Tony has arranged a secret meeting with Paulie, who asks "I do something wrong?" Tony replies, "Sunday, my house, box of Mallomars on the counter?

Mallomars appear briefly in the WB series Felicity episode "Todd Mulcahy: Part 1." Todd sends Felicity a care package filled with art supplies and Mallomars. Then, in "Todd Mulcahy: Part 2," Felicity tearfully finds comfort in a Mallomar after Todd gets hit by a speeding bus.

Mallomars appear in Gilmore Girls; Lorelai receives traditional birthday Mallomars every year from her daughter Rory. Also in one episode Rory pins a message for Lorelai to Mallomars because that way Lorelai is bound to find them. In another episode, Rory and Lorelai are seen eating Mallomars after Rory has a bad date.

Mallomars are mentioned in Regarding Henry, the 1991 movie staring Harrison Ford and Annette Bening. They were Henry's (Harrison Ford's character) favorite treat before he suffered from retrograde amnesia as a result of being shot multiple times.

Mallomars are shown during an episode of "The Nanny" when Fran comforts Maggie concerning a breakup.

Mallomars are mentioned during the Conan O'Brien skit "Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage", where Pierre complains about the inability to get Mallomars during the summer months.

In case you didn't already know, Mallomars are very healthy. They prevent all kinds of illness and cure just about everything you might have. Well... at least the logic I'm going with the next time I get to the store!

LOL!! I grew up with mallomars. They are my mom's favorite cookie! She sticks them in the microwave to soften them a little.

But they are so darn expensive!!!

They are my father's favorite cookie. Mom would buy them and hide them or the box would be gone before he got home from work. Once opened, he would hide them again. We would search the kitchen for those things.
