I just made a purchase on Amazon, went to the bathroom, and when I returned I had this wanrning screen "warning" me of many viruses and trojans on my computer! The malaware is called "live security platinum". It's popping up every few minutes warning me to buy its software to "protect" me from those trojans and viruses, and it's trying prevent me ftom going to sites such as Google and even the Dis, saying it will harm my computer!

How is that you don't have to even visit a site anymore to get infected? Good God, why can't these criminals be stopped?

Please help me to get rid of it. I tried to do a System restore, but it wont let me open it!

Please, please help me....

Some of those popups will give you a virus, I would not click on it.

I did not click on any popups. I just left the room for a few minutes, and when I came back there it was.

But I think I found a solution. I logged on using the "Safe Mode" option, and was able to do the System Restore that way. It seems to have worked, no traces of the malaware present! Yay!

I doubt that it came from Amazon. I use that site almost every day, have for a very long time, and have never gotten malware or adaware from it. Best thing is to find a free program that scans for them, and run it. Maybe someone else will be along with a specific site for you to use, I myself use Norton and have never had the problem..Good luck!

I've used:

Trend Micro's House Call (online scan)
Malwarebytes (free download)

Also make sure you are running some kind of antivirus (Microsoft Windows Defender, AVG, and Avast are free ones) and some kind of firewall (ZoneAlarm is a free one).

Eek! I know how stressful it can be when your computer is acting funky. I do this for a living, so I see malware quite a bit. It almost sounds as if your computer was hit with a FakeAV type malware. I'm very glad that you were able to do a system restore and wipe it out. I doubt that Amazon was the culprit - but some sites will install malware in the background without you even knowing! Whatever you do...don't click those ads, no matter how frightening they are - that's why we call them "scare-ware"!

Some estimates say that up to 20,000 new viruses and variants are created each month!

In the future, I'd suggest the following - and they're both free!

1. Ensure that you have up-to-date antivirus. I use AVG, which is free, and I update it daily. I run an antivirus check overnight every 3 days. Antivirus without updating DAT / Signature files is pretty useless.

2. Try using two programs (they're both free) called MalwareBytes and Spybot. Make sure they're updated too! I use these a few times a month, and they can identify and remove malware. It's part of good computer housekeeping!

Good luck!

Try Malwarebytes, BUT the virus may block you from running it. Google malwarebytes & some of the words in the popups your seeing & you should find a solution.

You have to boot to SAFE MODE and then run Malwarebytes. Occasionally the malware (it is not a virus) can get in and disable any attempt to get to SAFE MODE, but it isn't very common. Running Malwarebytes or the others without being in SAFE MODE doesn't clean everything. The malware is still there ready to reinstall itself after the cleaning. You have to boot to SAFE MODE so that the reinstall program doesn't start and monitor before any cleaning starts.

Thank you guys. Thankfully last night I managed to get rid of it on Safe Mode

Installed AVG and Malawarebytes.

I'm sure it didn't come from Amazon, but I have no idea how I got it. It used to be that you had to visite certain "risky" sites to get infected, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. That's so scary.

I blooming hate malware. How SAD are the people who code these things? Do they have no life? Get kicks from causing chaos and worry? What?

Nope, they don't come directly from sites like Amazon. Just about everywhere on the internet does have ads though. This "Antivirus virus" very often comes from the ads. The sites like Amazon and it's even possible here on Disboards, can not control the ads. They are completely separate from the site they are on. It probably came from the ads on Amazon and Amazon probably resolved it pretty quickly once known.

People in the past have gotten this "Antivirus virus" from visiting the Disboards, but it would be from the ads and not this site particularly.

Nope

comes from users that click banner ads, links in emails and other junk.

Stuff and lie in waiting also, so might have (and does) have zero to do with being on Amazon...

Heck half the users out there will fall for fake urls, keyloggers etc.. Almost always the user error

They all should be in JAIL!

That sounds likely

Again, I did not click on anything. No ads, no links on emails or any other "junk". I'm very careful about stuff like that. This seemed to come out of nowhere.

I will reiterate that you must click Update on your Malaware Bytes program before you use it so you can capture the latest malware, as they change/evolve all the time. If you don't take this step each time, you can miss them. You must also Quarantine and then Reboot in order to keep them off.
