Making my DD's Halloween costume

My DD is in Grade 2. A couple of weeks ago, she got the idea from chickadee magazine that she wanted me to make her unicorn costume!! :scared1: Anyone who has seen this magazine will know what I am talking about. You basically take a hoodie, add felt for a mane and tail, a horn and you're done. It sounds easy enough... but I am really not crafty. At all. I've made the costume but it's a pretty sad looking unicorn. And to top it off, her school has a big parade on Halloween, where all the kids march through the school showing off their costumes (parents often show up for this) and they end up in the gym where they have an assembly and get to admire each other's costumes. I'm really hoping my DD won't get teased over this. She's very shy, very quiet and won't stick up for herself at all. :guilty:

For the record, I offered to go out and buy a unicorn costume for her. She really wanted me to make it. I also suggested wearing a different costume to school (we have a very nice Belle one) but she wants to be a unicorn.

I'm not really expecting solutions here, no one can help me and my lack of creativity, but maybe if anyone has a good idea how a very shy child can defend herself against some teasing, I'd appreciate it.

Can you add some sequins or bling and spray some starch on the horn and mane to keep them in place?

What is wrong with it that you don't want her to wear it? Can you post a picture and have some of the crafty people here help?

I will definitely post a pic but not sure how :/

The picture of the unicorn that you posted tiggger1, is so cute! I wouldn't complain if I could make something look like that!

Here's my idea:

For the mane, go to Michael's and buy a feather boa ($10 I think or less) at that time, also pick up a small hot glue gun and a bag of glue bolts (because now that you own a glue gun, it will come in handy so why not have some extra glue?) this should be about $5 for the gun, maybe $3 for the bag of extras?

Hot glue the boa down the center of the mane (like if the mane is two layers of felt, hot glue it down the center, in between the two felt manes.

You can cut the boa as long as you need it.

Sparkles...you just can't go wrong...

Floppy horn...is the horn itself floppy or is it just listing side to side from where it's attached?

OK... LOVE the feather boa idea! Would you still keep the white felt tail? I braided it. It looks ok.

Horn is off to the side. I will be taking it off (aluminum foil horn) and putting on a new horn, bristol board that is painted silver with sparkles on top.

take a headband and attach the horn to is by wire, cut a hole in the hoody and put the horn through. have your dd put the headband on and it should keep it where it needs to be!

I just made a pathetic pop tart costume for my third grader. He loves it though and that's all that matters. I bet she'll look adorable!
On horn any way you can add the twisty around it. The unicorn horn is kind of a twisty thing. I have model magic that would work want me to bring it over.

Sure, you could keep the tail as is. :)
