Making Liquid Fabric Softener Last Longer

Using the liquid fabric softener IN THE WASHER where it is suppose to be used is the only way to make sure that the clothes smell good, are soft and are wrinkle free. The fabric softener helps the clothes dry without wrinkles. If you just have a sponge banging around in there hitting a few clothes here and there in little spots that is really doing nothing for softening the fabric or preventing wrinkles. All that does is put a little fabric softener smell on a few clothes here and there. I don't see that as effective at all. Not if you want the benefits of what the softener is meant to do.

Here's how I save money: I have never in my adult life bought or used liquid fabric softener. My clothes are just fine.

Due to skin allergy issues, we quit using fabric softener years ago. I've used the same dryer balls all that time. One time purchase for about $10 and my clothes are nice a soft. The balls look like they have years of use left in them.
I admit you don't get the pretty smell, but that was our issue to start with.

I use white vinigar instead of liquid fabric softener. If I want a little scent in my clothing, I use half a dryer sheet in the dryer.

My friend does a similar thing. Except instead of soaking a sponge, she sprays a few squirts on a washcloth.

The sponge or washcloth method actually do work as well as adding to water. It is the same principal as a dryer sheet...gets out wrinkles, softens, gets out static and adds a nice scent.

Now if you were just drying a few minutes then line hanging, I'd stick to adding to the water.

:laundy:

Not true at all. It is JUST AS EFFECTIVE as putting it in the washer.

I don't know which is true, haven't conducted a study  but I would think it is the same as using a dryer sheet in the dryer.

If someone really wants to save money, they could use white vinegar in the washer as a fabric softener.

I usually use a little extra fabric softener in the rinse water mostly to prevent static cling. I have a lot of clothes that I don't dry.

I was thinking of doing the same with the vinegar after I've used all of my current fabric softener. A few friends of mine use vinegar and they love it. One uses something to scent hers, but I can't remember what she uses.

I posted this for people who actually use store-bought liquid fabric softener. Of course, using vinegar would be cheaper. Some people don't like the thought of using vinegar because of the smell. I know it doesn't make clothes smell like vinegar, but they refuse to try, so I'm just trying to be helpful. That is all.

I know a few people who were very resistant to trying vinigar in the wash too. Once they gave it a try though they were converts :lmao:.

been using vinegar for awhile now and love it :) I think it makes my clothes last longer too :)

I also use vinegar in my wash. I use apple cider vinegar though. I like the smell of it going in the washer instead of regular vinegar.

We do this too. After I tried to clean out the fabric softener container on the washer and saw all the crud, I swore I'd never use it again. Vinegar makes my clothes very soft and the dryer sheet removes the static.

Wow--I can't believe how rude people are. The OP was trying to share a great tip and you people make it seem like she's pushing something on you.

Thanks, OP! I use both at different times, so I'll be sure to check this out! :)
