UPDATE HERE!
Well, I guess I should tell you how the trip coming up came to be! And tell you about the
PROMISE. We always knew we’d go back and do more when the boys got a little older. And we loved Disney at Christmas – the decorations, I mean – NOT the crowds! So fast forward 2 years and we discover that my DD has an entire week before Christmas off of school. I think to myself… hey, didn’t that Birnbaum dude say that was a “not so busy week” at Disney? So, I start looking at prices and such. Ugh… it’s so expensive. And flights for 5 people around the holidays!

It wasn’t looking good. I told Tom we could try an off-site hotel – gasp! – once. To see if we like it. But I probably won’t. But we’ll try it.

So we ended up booking the Hilton in DTD. At least you can still take advantage of the EMH and it’s right near DTD. It seemed like a good plan and it was cheap! I kid you not… we were getting a jr. king suite for $150 a night. And to save even more money… we were going to drive. 22 hours from Michigan.

I got all kinds of things ready for the kids to do in the car… we have a dvd player too. It’s gonna be fun!

Fast forward some more to TWO weeks before the trip. Tom lost his job. He had taken a new one 9 months prior so we could move closer to my family and it turns out the company was in very bad financial shape and he was low man on the totem pole and fell victim to down-sizing. Now, we could’ve still gone to Disney. But we hadn’t bought our park tix yet and didn’t have plane tix and could cancel our ressie at the Hilton and not be out a dime. We decided we shouldn’t go.

It wouldn’t have been a very financially irresponsible thing to do. Plus we would’ve been worried about every penny we spent and that didn’t seem like a good time. Now, how do you tell 3 kids you can’t go to Disney 2 weeks before the trip? I’ll tell you how! You come up with a consolation prize! We told them what happened with Daddy’s job and that we shouldn’t spend so much on a vacation right now BUT we would take them to Chicago (only a 3 hr. drive for us at that point) for a few days and go to Shedd’s Aquarium and the Field Museum. They asked, “Are we going to stay in a hotel?” Yes. “Is there a pool?” Yes. “Cool!” Literally… that was the entire conversation.

We also
PROMISED that when Daddy got a new job and things were better, we’d go to Disney. Well… it took 5 months for him to find a job (well, to accept an offer we could live with) and that job was in North Carolina! We were moving. And having to sell a house in a market that you can’t give a house away in. So, we had to tweak the
PROMISE. We had to sell our house first… then Disney. Selling the house took 11 months. About that time we learned that the school my kids go to was going to convert to a year round schedule for the 2007/08 year. It’s not as bad as it sounds. They go to school for 9 weeks and then have a 3 week break. So on and so forth. Turns out they have a 3 week break around Thanksgiving. Hey

– we could go to Disney! I started to look into the week of Thanksgiving. I told my BIL what I was thinking and he said, “Yes, you and every one else are thinking the same thing. School’s out, lets go to Disney.” Crap. I do not want huge crowds! Been there, done that. So, how about the week after? They are still off that week. Birnbaum dude says that’s a low volume week too.

So, we’ve got our dates… where will we stay? Will we fly? Stay tuned to find out!
