For some reason my sons moved from New York to California. Well, I guess they had pretty good reasons -- one works and the other one's in college. Anyway, I like to make Christmas stockings each year and the shape of California certainly lends itself to a stocking!

Here's my question. The map I printed has four islands off the coast in the bottom third of the state. I'm wondering how "important" they are in a California map. Obviously it would be easier not to have to add islands to my stockings, but I'm thinking New York wouldn't be complete without Long Island (where my mother grew up!) and am wondering if those four islands are similarly important to California's geography.

What do you say? Include the four islands or not? :confused3

Thanks.

There are actually 8 total Channel Islands, but they are all pretty small, especially when compared to the relative size of NY to CA. And they are mostly protected reserves, not places many people live. Catalina is the only island with many people at all and has a population under 4000.

So unless one of them is a big fan of Catalina, you would be safe to leave them off.

I've lived in CA my whole life. If I had to draw a map of the state from memory, I would completely forget them.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Good to know the islands aren't populated, except for Catalina. I just looked at an outline map so didn't know the names of the islands. My younger son is thinking of transferring to CSU Channel Islands, so I'll add them when he transfers. :thumbsup2

I have a feeling most New Yorkers don't include Long Island (long as in 120 miles) when they think of New York, but since my mother's familiy is from there I'm always aware of it.

Thanks for replying.

Leave them off. :thumbsup2

We have a wooden puzzle of the United States and they don't include the islands - so if it's good enough for them, I'm thinking it's good enough for your project too! :goodvibes

I agree. Thanks. Now I'm starting to think the islands are going to need a support group for the under appreciated.

:santa:

I made a prototype of the stocking yesterady. California has a very wiggly coastline. I fear I see hand stitching in my future. :crazy2:

I'm not sure why I'm so determined to make these stockings. My sons are in their twenties so I know they won't particularly care about them, and I certainly know they won't realize the HOURS! that went into them.

Anyway, I've been plugging along in my quest to make stockings for them and their girlfriends. Originally they were just going to be big enough to hold a gift card, but I've had to make them a little bigger so I'll put in a check instread of a gift card. :confused3

First, I played around with different sizes, placements, their names on the cuffs, etc. and eventually made a prototype.

Then, I made a few more tweaks and began the real deal.

Did you hear my scream? I was on the third one when I realized I misspelled Feliz. In my defense, 1. I'm old. 2. I took French not Spanish in high school. 3. I recently got an email from my brother mentioning Felix Unger. UGH!

Back to the drawing board . .

Glad I started these so early. I should have them done by Christmas 2015 :cool1:
