Making a gift for a 5 year old boy.

I had the great idea for us all picking names and MAKING a gift for each other. Well I got my 5 year old son- (when mentioning this I thought I would get dd I guess and I would do jewelry)
So my idea is to make some kind of car mat for him. But I am not sure how to go about it.
Should I paint on the back of Vinyl? And what type of paint would hold up to heavy use? Or should I do it on a wood board instead? And then go real crazy with the paint then shellack the heck out of it?

Any idea would be greatly appreciated. He loves his cars so that is why I was thinking a mat would be the way to go(I am not great at building painting is my thing) but I would welcome any other ideas.

I made a quilted car mat for my son. If you know how to sew it is very easy (even just a straight stich)
get the fabric that has the roads, town, ect on it - usually can find it in the fabric section of walmart or a joanns.
add batting, back it and then along the side i added pockets for some of his cars with a velcro closure.
very cute, protable, quick and inexpensive project.
he folds it up with cars inside and takes it to my mothers to play with.

My aunt made my brother one of these many moons ago. She used a non-fitted sheet, then fabric paint to paint in landmarks that he knew on a giant map of our home. It's funny to look back at and see the stuff that was important to him (gosh - is it really almost 25 years ago!).
