Making a bad mattress more comfortable?

I will be staying at a friends home in a couple weeks. Problem is with the mattress, last time I stayed for two nights and my back, neck and hips hurt for a few days after. It's brand new and they raved all about how little it cost and what a good deal they got. Honestly, when you lay down all you feel are hard springs. At first I wondered if it was even new for being that lumpy. .The second night I barely slept. I'm assisting with home renovations for almost two weeks and I'm NOT looking forward to that bed. Besides paying for 10/12 days of hotel what can I bring with me to put on this bed?

Wondering if bringing and sleeping on top of a thick sleeping bag would help at all?

Walmart sells an egg crate type of foam mattress pad. (I don't know what it's called, sorry) But my niece has one on top of her mattress bc she said her mattress is hard.

I second the egg crate. I have one on my mattress, even though mine is decent, I still love the extra layer.

I would skip the egg crate thing and go for the Memory Foam one instead. I bought one for my son's bed and it really helped. It's very comfortable. The egg crate didnt really do much, but it is cheaper so it would be better than nothing.

Memory Foam holds heat so if you don't want heat while you're trying to sleep, I would skip the Memory Foam.

I had an egg crate one from Target a few years ago. I liked it. You could use that and put 2 sheets over it and it should be fine.

I had to find a way to survive on a mattress that is 50+ years old! Best combo i found is to use a small blow up mattress PAD like used for camping..not an entire mattress. Then I would put as many blankets as I could on top of the bed for extra comfort( a really thick mattress pad would also work for this but I already had the blankets so this was the cheaper option. Egg crates work ok but have found the air mattress pad plus blankets to be the best option. :thumbsup2

I bought a mattress when I was 18. It came with a used bedroom suite I was getting for my very first place! The furniture and mattress and box spring didn't even look used. Pefect condition from a person who had a spotless home.

When I checked the legal tag on the side it said something like "shipped in 1977." YIKES!!!

However, it still looks great and it is the most comfortable bed in our home. That set is still in use although now it is in our guest bedroom. Whenever we have company people always ask us about it and rave about how comfortable it is.

We have it in one of those zipper bags just due to allergens, but otherwise it is a wonderful place to rest!

Wish we could find another one like it. We got a Simmons Beauty Rest when we got married about nine years ago and the springs went. Now they are poking us all the time. Thankfully, the company is giving us a credit to replace, but - as they say - the just don't make 'em like they used to.

As for the OP - I agree with the egg crates. We love ours!!!

Thanks for the advice! I'll make sure to stop by Target there and grab an egg crate pad. I'm guessing the thickest one would be best?

My daughter and I bought an LX twin foam topper for her college bed from ebay. It took me a while to win "the one", but it only cost $15. I think it's 3" thick. When she went up for orientation last June she said the mattress felt like it was left over from the Holocaust. Now she wants one of these toppers to fit her full bed at home.

As for an old mattress, remember, it's not just the age . . . it's how it's been used. A mattress bought in the 70s or 80s that'd been in a guest room and used just occasionally might not be worn out; whereas, a mattress that sees everyday use will give you about a decade's service.

Often memory foam pads are the same price or not much more for twins to kings, I've cut Qs/Ks and you have double thickness on smaller beds.

That makes sense, but if it is not comfortable, why keep it? Fifty years is long enough to save up for a new mattress, ;)

The new memory foams w/ the gel in them don't hold the heat like the earlier ones. We had boght one for a mattress at my mother's house, and it was soooo hot! Finally figured out to lay a quilt over it to help w/ that (still could only sleep w/ the top sheet or I would get too hot). Then I bought one w/ the gel in it for my house, and so far so good on it not holding the heat!

We ahd to move that one at my mother's on to her bed, so I need to get another one for the bed I sleep on at her house. Sure wish Sam's would mark them down. $100 is a lot of money to spend to only sleep on the thing one weekend a month!

Ah let me explain! A little history will help. It is at my grandmother's house. She bought the house from my great grandparents. at that time they had my mom her sister, and another sister on the way in a couple years so they bought two mattresses for my mom and aunt. They have been in the bedroom ever since. My mom slept on it through childhood and early adulthood and it has served as a guest room since. It has been 50+ years though. Since it is only used for guest sleep overs no need to burden the cost of a new mattress on my grandparents :goodvibes

Mattress topper and a couple of really good thick blankets.

You could also get a sleeping bag, and stuff it with pillows. Preferably the foam ones that won't squish out on you after a few hours.

We have saved a couple bad mattresses (one rv, one bunkbed) with good mattress toppers. We have a foam one for the queen rv mattress and recently we found a gel mattress topper at SAMs club for a really good price for the twin mattress. Makes a HuGE difference.

Definitely some sort of mattress topper will work.

The second to last time we stayed at the inlaws house, we couldn't sleep on the guest bed. The mattress was horrendous. So my husband offered to buy them a new mattress for the guest bedroom for us to use on that trip and future trips. My husband didn't want to just get a mattress topper. They agreed and we got the new mattress.

The next trip, we go there and the mattress was horrible. We took a peek and it wasn't the mattress we had bought. Turns out they took the mattress we paid for and put it on their own bed and put their mattress on the guest bed.
My husband asked about the mattress we had bought and that's when they told us they had swapped mattresses. I was ticked off since we had paid 100% for that guest room mattress for us to sleep on when we visited several times a year.

We moved to a cheap motel so we could sleep that trip. It was either that or spend even more of our own money on a mattress topper to attempt to make that bed comfortable.

That was the last time we ever stayed at their house - now we just go to motels when we visit.
