makeup ~expiration dates

I know once you open makeup they recommend you only keep it for so long. But what about makeup that has not been purchased, how long is it's shelf life?

with the cost of makeup nowadays I keep most of mine until I run it down/out. Most makeup does not go bad if you are clean when using it - ie don't use fingers, clean your brushes regularly, don't use it when you are sick, wash your hands when applying the stuff.

As long as it hasn't crumbled, started to smell, separate, or dried out you are fine to keep using it.
