Hi, all! We're leaving very soon and I'm wondering about make-up. I would like to bring SOME in my carry-on. I don't care about shampoo/conditioner/shavers. I'm talking about some blush, pressed powder, mascara, and possibly liquid foundation. What are people's experiences? I did check out the TSA website and didn't find it all that helpful. My DH and I don't fly very often, so I don't know. While I plan on checking the majority of my personal care items, I do want to have a few things in my carry-on..what do I do? Also, what about travel-size cans of hairspray? I don't want to have to throw things away, nor do I want to slow down the security check point. Makes it longer till I get to Disney!

We travel a couple times a year and my makeup goes everywhere with ME! I put ALL of it in a quart size zip lock bag inside my shoulder bag. I have never had an issue...ever. Not sure about the hairspray, but I think you can take the pump (in the ziplock) as long as it's under the ounce rule (3 oz?).

Powder make up is fine in a carry on and doesn't have to be in the the 311 bag the liquid foundation and mascara do have to go into your 311 bag as does the hairspray just make sure the hairspray is 3.4 oz or less.

I'm not quite certain why people get confused as there is a very helpful chart there, but to simplify what is permitted:

  • Liquid - no
  • Gel - no
  • Powder - yes :)

Maybe people over think things? Try and think about it this way - if you took the item out of the plastic packaging, would it hold its shape? (Powder blush would, mascara would not)

All liquids and gels must be 100ml/3,4 oz or less and must fit in one litre/quart clear bag per passenger. (If two people are travelling together ie spouses and one person doesn't have a lot of items in their bag, you can put some of yours in their bag)

I take the travel size of everything; toothpaste, hairspray, deodarant, everything. I put enough to fit in my 3-1-1 bag for the first day, in case my luggage is lost, and the rest in my checked bag.

As you use it up, then you just throw away the containers, and don't have so much to take home.

I also wonder why people are so confused - I think the TSA site is pretty straight-forward. I do believe that people really do overthink it as well.
