It just really depends on your circumstances (resort level, season, # of adults in your party, etc.) -- if you want to be sure you are getting the best deal, you *must* do the math!
Ex: for my dad and stepmom in a std view room at AKL it was $70 cheaper to do room-only and add the dining plan.
But for my single uncle, it was cheaper to do room-only+dining if at a mod, but cheaper to do FD if he chose a value resort.
For my party (5A, 3C but one of the C is 10+, so really 6A 2C) it was *more expensive* to do room only + dining in an OKW 2BR than it is to do FD in a BLT 2BR. That one surprised me.
I think in general, the more expensive your room and the fewer adults in your party, room discounts will trump FD.
It's not hard to run the numbers and it could save you a lot of $$.
