I was advised today to make sure I book all the elements of my trip not covered by ATOL or ABTA on a credit card. At least then when companies go bust you will be able to get your money back.

I always use a CC to book a holiday, just for this reason. :thumbsup2

I always think that whatever the fee is, for me is irrelevant - the peace of mind is invaluable.

I lost my money on my hire car in Spain at New Year because I used my debit card. have now found a company that you don't pay for until you get there.

thanks for the reminder

Would you pay the whole amount or just the deposit with a cc? What percentage is the average surcharge? The surcharge scares me a bit if you are paying the balance of an expensive trip with a cc.

Surcharges are usually somewhere between 1.5-2.5% - in the big scheme of things when your paying £000's for a holiday, the cost is small in comparison - JMO

I work for a well known bank and i had a stigma with credit cards when i joined. Wow my perception has changed! I buy almost everything on my credit card and pay it off each month when i get paid so i don't get any interest charged. If you use your credit card you are covered if you are not entitling satisfied with the holiday also :thumbsup2

We always pay the deposit by CC and have assumed we're covered. I think there is a £100 minimum payment before you get any cover.

I don't know where I got this info from - perhaps someone can confirm this is right or not.

I haven't got the option of paying with a CC. lol. I just have to remember I'm ATOL protected and I'm with a company that's unlikely to go bankcrupt, so just have to hope it's ok! :S

The only reason I have a credit card is for paying for things like holidays and dishwashers etc which I pay off in full when the bill comes in.

I book flights and then pay that off in full, I book accommodation and then pay it off in full etc.

I have a debit card for everything else or cash. It took me years and years to get a credit card and I only got it to pay for our holiday last year for the peace of mind.

Good point.:thumbsup2 I don't think you have to pay the balance with a cc though to be covered. Then again, think of all those Tesco clubcard points...:rotfl:

Th reason I mentioned it was I was being told a horror story of a well known company that allegedly is in serious difficulty..... I don't know if it is or if its a rumour but whoever you book with and whatever you book just do it with a card and its hopefully going to be OK ;-)

I would not consider paying anything other than cc on the net, we had stuff not turn up once, a rucksack and tshirts from moto gp, cc refunded us when the company started ignoring me and sorted it all out no probs.
CC company was so good and helpfull I thought I had kissed goodbye to the money for certain.
