We have a trip scheduled for June 5 through June 12. We are using a Deluxe 40% PIN code that expires June 12. I am just now discovering that the county we live in for some insane reason does not build any "snow days" into the year. Because we have had an unusually snowy winter, we are as of today, supposed to have school on Friday June 4 which is the day we were leaving for WDW. Right now I'm thinking DD5 (Kindergarten) is not going to be there the last day. But if we get even more snow and they keep calling school off it is possible that she will have school even into the next week (the week we are supposed to be in WDW. So I'm telling myself if it is just a day or two no big deal. If they end up having school into the next week will we get into trouble for having her miss that week? We could leave on Saturday instead of Friday so she could attend school on June 4. We are going with several other people so we are really feeling stuck. I have not contacted the school just yet. Is it a big deal? What would you do?

I'd have no problem with my kids missing the last 2 weeks of school! Seriously, grades and attendance are in, books are returned, and here, the whole last week is 1/2 days, and they play games. I won't take my JH/HS kids out of school for a vacation, because they'll miss too much work, with the exception of the end of the year.

Don't sweat it!!
#1 It''s Kindergarten
#2 It's the last day (or so) of school
#3 You made plans before the snowdays
#4 GO... HAVE FUN!!

As fun as the last day or two of elementary school can be, and it is pretty much fun... Disney is more fun!!

But that's just my opinion. I wouldn't think twice about going!:thumbsup2

I agree don't worry!! Go and have fun!!
its Kindergarten which is not even mandatory in most states.

I scheduled our trip for four days after school was out. We have four built in snow makeup days. This gave me up to 8 days grace before our trip. Well we've gotten eight snow days (plus we missed one of the makeup days for more snow). At this point, my kids are only missing the last day of school. But even if they miss a week, I'm not stressing about it. They never do anything the last week anyway (and my kids are in 4th and 6th grade).
With a kindergartener, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Have Fun!!!

When dd was in elementary, the last day of school was a Tuesday. 1/2 day. 1/2 day on Monday, and no after care the rest of the week. I pulled her out for those two days when I could find a care camp. In fact, I'm not sure she ever did those last two days.

I have 3 girls ages 10- in 5th grade and 9- in 3rd grade and 6 in kindergarten. We are leaving for Disney Feb 28th missing 5 days of school. I told the school they got quite snotty, They said you must give us a letter and these days off your children will be unexcused. Well I said to the lady fine I will give you a letter and I will mail you a post card from WDW....:rolleyes1

Hope you have a fun vacation..

I wouldn't ever recommend treating the people who educate your children in that manner. Did you check beforehand to see if the days were excused? You said your children have issues. Maybe their concern is related to those.

This is nothing like the OP's situation. She planned a trip when school was not to be in session.

I also say don't sweat it! We are also in your boat. We planned our Disney vacation this year over our kids Spring Break. Due to an unusual amount of snow this year (we live in TN) we have had 8 snow days. That is totally unheard of for us!! Now they are talking about make-up days in, you guessed it, Spring Break! Oh well, DH and I talked about it and our kids will be at Disney World as planned. Sorry school! The vacation was planned and paid for well before the snow came. I'm sure the school will make some type of arrangements.
As for the last days of school, honestly, kids don't do anything. The teacher will probably be glad to have 1 less kid to keep track of running around excited about the last day of school.
Have fun at Disney and don't stress about missing the last day of school!

I would let the school know now that the vacation is planned. Just in case.
That way they won't expect him to be there the last few days, and they won't think he is missing school "just because."

op, you won't be the only one dealing with this. We have family members who are teachers and administration who are having some of the same worries. Here's hoping there is an end in sight re. the snow!

I was not speaking with any teachers just the rude ladies in the office, who where like how dare you take your kids out of school. some times I just think you only live once any people have to many things to say. And the office women should not know about my kids issues or ? them.
Beside all their teachers are excited 4 them so I guess its ok...

Don't sweat it, OP. Just let the school know that you have plans already made, and have a great trip! :goodvibes

Thanks to everyone for making me feel better. So far she has had perfect attendance so that is a benefit for her and I figure we will not be the only family in the entire school doing this. I will let the school know well in advance what our plans are. For now, I'm waiting to see how many days she is actually going to miss before I let her teacher know.

Last year we missed 2 weeks of school before Christmas due to the huge ice storm that hit the NE (the shelters in our area were open that long because there were still people without power for that long; thank goodness ours came back on after 7 days). There were then a couple more snow days in January.

The school sent home questionaires asking parents to vote on several options including extending the school year, cutting out February break, cutting out April break and extending the school day every day. The school year calendar that we receive before the beginning of the school year shows potential days at the end of the year for making up snow days so I voted for that option with extending the school day as a second choice. I also wrote on the bottom of my questionaire that if the choice is to eliminate the February break then my kids would be missing that week because we had already made our final payment on a family vacation (we went to WDW that week) and I wasn't about to cancel it. I can't imagine that the school would have penalized kids for missing days that were originally scheduled as vacation days. Even if people had booked something for those end of year potential days that are not officially school days I can't imagine the school penalizing them (though because they are on there, something I appreciate for this very reason, I purposely do NOT schedule anything for then just in case). If the calendar does not originally show the days as school days then the school can not penalize you for missing them.

Just to let you know, the teachers finished their lesson plans on time and the make-up days at the end of the year were a rediculous waste of time that was only done to meet some arbitrary regulation regarding number of school days. Our kids wouldn't have missed a thing had they missed those extended days.

Your child is only in K. Go on your trip and don't worry at all about it. I bet the school will just tell you to enjoy your trip and not worry about it.

While I would agree about not worrying about missing the last couple of days due to a planned vacation, I have to disagree with those that say teachers do not teach the last few days of school. With the exception of maybe the last day or even half day (when we have to collect books, clean desks, celebrate moving on, etc.), I teach every single day! I am there to teach; students are there to learn -not for daycare! (I am not saying that we are starting a new unit of study or anything, but we are still working!)

Also, many school systems have gone to counting family vacations as unexcused absences. Attendance rates are part of what many states look at when deciding whether a school meets their Annual Yearly Progess. I know of many "good" schools that have failed to make AYP (and are then considered a "failing" school) because their attendance rate was below the required percentage simply due to so many families taking vacations during the school year. So...it is the secretary's job to "enforce" that.

Sorry so long...

That being said...OP-I would not worry about your child missing the last couple of days.

Go and have a good time. I would not think a second thought about it. As much as education is important, so is family time. Your child will probably remember those two days with their family at WDW more than cleaning her desk and handing in her books.

I would make calling cards to give out to her friends a day or two before the trip so that they can stay in touch over the Summer break.

Our school district is currently full of idiots so I can understand what you are going through. Our Superintendent said we can not delay school anymore this year so she just gives the kids the day off for something that should only be an hour delay. At this point I have no clue when the kids will get out but I am planning on pulling my kids by disenrolling them and then re-enrolling them next school year. We want to do Disney and then head to Kansas so they can have their visitation with their dad.

I would not stress pulling your child out and you can always dis-enroll/withdraw them if need be.

ETA: I am so not talking about the teachers either in this just the school administrators who say we can't have any delays but yet all the school districts around us are getting delays and we have had 1 maybe 2 this year.

Not to be the pooper but what about kindergarten graduation? Kinda a big deal here in our county but normally I wouldn't stress about pulling them out of school.
