Make A Wish Question

My second cousin has been hospitalized recently and his mom called me to tell me that he's a candidate for a Make A Wish trip to Disney....she asked for information on Disney and Make A Wish and I could give her some Disney information (her son is 2 and she asked about rides he would like and things like that). I would like to give her better information so for those of you who have had a child go on a Make A Wish Trip, what is covered so I can give her the best information possible? Do you stay on their property (I remember someone had pictures of this cute resort place where they read to the children at night and had a splash park on location) or do they put you on Disney Property? Do they cover meals or would my Cousin and her husband pay out of pocket for their meals (If they are staying on property but meals are not provided I would like to give them a ball park of how to save money or how much money to take with them)? Any and all information would be welcomed.

Honestly, the best tact is just to let the process happen. MaW will had a pair of wish granters assigned to their family specifically who will be able to answer all their questions about whatever wish your second cousin settles on. They will cover all the cost questions, all the accommodations questions and any other questions the family can possibly come up with.

As a wish granter myself, the most prep I want a family to do before I visit is be familiar with the types of wishes available and talk with their wish child about different options (if, of course, the child is developmentally able to be involved in that discussion). Some preliminary brainstorming, basically. But as a wish granter, I like to be able to brainstorm with the child/family myself to make sure they've thought of all the best possibilities to make sure I'm finding the one, true wish. And while it's great when wish families share stories with each other, and we definitely encourage that, different chapters do things different ways. I always feel bad when one family gets their hopes built up by something another chapter did when mine does something a slightly different way. A big strength of MaW is the local chapter system, but it can lead to some inconsistencies when people talk about experiences with different chapters.

As for what to tell your cousin, on any MaW trip, they try to cover everything. That goes for Disney or a shopping spree in Paris, being a firefighter for a day or a new puppy, a show horse or a trip to meet the Wiggles. There is a wish-kid specific resort at WDW, but it is not a guarantee that any one child can stay there on their trip (we try to, obviously, but there are always exceptions and odd circumstances). Find pictures and stories on any MaW website of a variety of wishes to show her so she sees all the possibilities.

And then let the process play out. I promise we'll make it fun.
