Hi. My apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place. We recently received confirmation of my son's Wish Trip to Disney World. We leave December 19 and come back Christmas Day. I have become consumed with thinking about how awesome this trip will be for our family. We are from South Carolina and will be driving.

Isaiah - Our Wish Child. Isaiah was born with Tricuspid-Atresia. That likely sounds unfamiliar to you so let me just explain that it is very similar to Hypoplastic Left Heart, a condition you are likely more familiar with. He stayed in the hospital two weeks at birth. He was lucky in that he did not require the first surgery. Shortly after coming home he somehow got menengitis. Back to hospital for three weeks. This nearly got him. The doctors decided to go ahead with the first planned procedure. Surgery itself went well but he had post-op seizures. In hospital a month. Isaiah had a slow recovery but gradually, and thankfully, had a much less eventful next couple of years. This past summer Isaiah had his final surgery. He is now 3 months post op and doing wonderfully. Isaiah is OBSESSED with "Wild Animals", Baymax, and Toy Story.

Now that the yucky stuff is out of the way lets talk about him. He is my wife, for better and worse. He is obstinate, demanding, and can bring a smile to anyone when the mood strikes. He goes from hilariously sweet and silly to making you want to choke him two seconds later. Like I said, he is my wife. He even looks exactly like her.

Gabe - Our eight year old. Gabe is me. Period. He is sarcastic, funny, very laid back, and super smart. He is a little shy but really gets along with everyone. He also happens to be an amazing brother. I am so thankful that he does not view his brother's health in a way that makes him jealous. He has always been more concerned for him than how long mom and dad will be gone. I am so proud of him! One of our stipulations when meeting our Make-A-Wish people was that we did not want any wish for Isaiah that Gabe could not be an equal participant in. Their relationship is too important. Gabe is really into Star Wars and Harry Potter. Like I said, he is me. He even looks like me.

My wife is a Kindergarten teacher. She tends to be very passive in all this. I think she has very mixed emotions. On one hand she is grateful that our family gets this opportunity. On the other it is more reinforcement of the fact that our son was born with something VERY wrong. I try not to bother her. She will get excited when we get there.

I am a High School math and engineering teacher. I am truthfully more excited than the kids.
I love Star Wars, Harry Potter, and am pretty much a big kid. More to come...

So now that you know about us, lets talk about our wish experience.

In January a coworker suggested I sign my son up. I have always thought it was for terminal children. Not true! I proceeded to sign him up. About a month later two wish volunteers came to talk to us and play with the boys. It was decided that Disney World would be his wish.

In May we got the call that it was time to go! Unfortunately he had open-heart surgery scheduled for June and would be in no shape to go. It was decided that he would be placed on a medical hold. I explained that we were both teachers and did not really get vacation days so it would have to be Christmas or next summer.

The first week of September we got the call that it would be Christmas. My wife and I were super excited. We were told that they would get back in touch once everything was confirmed. Well two weeks later I got an email saying the doctor did not sign off because it was not "medically appropriate." Lots of tears that night.

The next day I got a phone call stating the doctor simply misread the paper work. Back on AND confirmed!!!

So here is how we told the kids:

Dad: "Gabe, I am sorry but I just found out we will not get to go see the new Star Wars movie the day it comes out..."
Gabe: "Why. You promised we would see it as soon as it comes out. Why can't we?"
Dad: "Because we will see it the day after it comes out, in something called an IMAX. Its the biggest screen ever!"
Gabe: "Oh thats cool!"
Dad: "And its in Disney World"
Gabe: No way!

For Isaiah, the actual wish child, we sat down and showed him pictures of Animal Kingdom and asked if he wanted to go. "Yes!!" He now asks every morning before getting out of bed "Dad, are we going to Disney World today?"

This is gonna be a long 2.5 months....

Awesome! Are you folks saying at Give Kids the World? If you are going at Christmas are you going to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party? Have you made dining reservations yet?

So a few plans.

We will be leaving the night of the 18th. Its about 7.5 hours for us and I like the idea of breaking it up. We will basically drive until the kids can't take it and get a room. I expect to arrive at Give Kids the World by lunchtime on the 19th.

Once there we should have nearly a whole day to explore GKTW.

On the evening of the 19th comes something My son and I are REALLY looking forward to: Star Wars Episode VII. That will kick off a whole week of excitement.

As far as parks go we will very much play that by ear. We do not have a full itinerary from MAW. I am hoping they have something special planned for Animal Kingdom but I am certainly not asking. I am already so amazingly grateful for this.

We will definitely be doing 3 days of Disney and 2 Days of Universal. Sea World is out. The Wizarding World is just too special...

P.S. Suggestions are always welcome.. I have already got some good info from the Wish Trip forum but you cannot be too informed.

I will update tonight with pics...

We will not be doing Mickeys Christmas Party. They actually end that on the 18th.

Glad to hear that you all are staying at GKTW! Look on their site for a daily itinerary of their activities...I am told you do not want to miss the Christmas Party there! So with three days of Disney (I honestly can not remember if the hoppers), are you all skipping a park or if you have hoppers splitting one day between two parks? Obviously you want to take a whole day at AK, since that seems like it will be the wish child's favorite! Maybe make a reservation at Tusker House for breakfast...good food, plus you get to meet Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Daisy and Goofy in safari gear. Of course MK is a whole day park for your kids ages. DHS you need to go to since you are SW fans...but go to EPCOT if you can...Soarin is worth it! Plus the little one would probably like Nemo and Turtle Talk with Crush...and the older one would probably like Test Track and Mission Space.

And your wife will be so excited to see the little ones (and you) be happy and carefree for this vacation!

Enjoy!

I do believe the three days are hopper passes. Current thinking (perhaps a bit wishful) is to spend the three mornings at AK. That way we distribute out what he is really in to. Afternoons/Evenings will be spent at the other three. One each day.

If that is unrealistic we will do one day each at MK, AK, DHS. Just throw Epcot out. I'm sure there are a couple of things we will miss but that will just leave something for if we ever go back.

Makes sense for you all! AK is a really big park (can fit all the other three in it!). check out the maps of the parks on various websites before you go...allearsnet.com is my favorite for planning (really easy to navigate) That way you can head straight to which ever ride/show/event you want to go to when you get into the parks!

You might also find that you only need one day at Universal...really just depends on the crowds...I know many a HP fan that will usually do one day at Universal for HP, but usually not enough for 2 days...but then again, crowds are a big factor and you guys may find you LOVE Universal's style more than Disney (I myself have never been so I should not be giving advice on the subject, lol!)

We took our oldest on a whirlwind Universal trip in summer 14. We really felt like we needed to do something with just him because this past summer was all doctor stuff for our youngest. We had to be 3 hours away for surgery and recovery.

Anyway, we LOVED Universal. Honestly, as a Harry Potter family, I simply cannot imagine Disney capturing the magic (pun intended!) of feeling like you are in Harry's world. It was truly awesome. Definitely two days.
