We went to the Luau on Sunday, June 13th--Here are our experiences.
We arrived outside the SeaFire Inn for check-in just before 6:00 (note--even though they advertise a 6:30 start time, that's really the START time---so try to be there by 6-6:15 or so). We were greeted right at six by a seating hostess at an outside podium. She gave us a menu card with our table assignment on it (pre assigned, so no worries there) and we made our way down the "Tiki Trail"--a pathway around the back of the SeaFire. On our way, a wahine was there to greet us with a silk flower lei--nice touch. She had several colors, but was only giving out the multicolored ones...not sure what the others were for.
Anyway, as we continued on, there was the obligitory photographer to take a picture for us....we did that, and then had our complimentary drink. I was a little disappointed in the selection.....it was either a draft beer (pre-poured), or a Rum Punch (looked like Hawaiian punch with a small amount of rum in a small glass). Not really a tropical drink at all.
Once inside, we had a little time to lounge around--the kitchen staff was preparing the food in the open kitchen, and the bar (cash) was open. Not very exciting drinks here, either, although they came in a souvenir glass. There was a better selection, but everything was from a mix--my Pina Colada tasted a little gritty. I had a "Mai Tai" later, and my wife had some other tropical drink--they were OK, but not great. And the Mai Tai certainly didn't follow the original recipe, but that's no big surprise....REAL Mai-Tai Few get it right.
Anyway, the menu card we were given indicated that there might be some entertainment--Hula lessons, or Poi balls--while we waited, but no dice.
Soon, though, we were seated. The tables had room for 8-10, and it doesn't look like there's a bad seat in the house. We were seated with a nice family from NC, and chatted with them a bit.
When we sat down, there was a salad plate already there for us....a few pieces of cut fresh fruit, along with some kind of slaw. It was OK. Nothing great, but nothing awful either.
Soon the show began....Really a decent show. Fire dancing, several costume changes, some humor....there were 4 couples (4 hula girls and 4 Polynesian warriors) and the Kahuna, plus a female narrator/MC plus 3 musicians.
The food came family style....Mahi in Pina Colada Sauce, Sweet and Sour Roast Pork, Teriyaki Chicken, Stir Fried Vegetables, and Fried Rice. It was decent--my wife liked the pork especially well, and I really liked the flavor of the vegetables.
It wasn't food to write home about, but it was fairly tasty, and there was LOTS of it.
Desert was an orangy cake with hot-fudge center, and some artificial--tasting whipped topping. We had that topping on a few other desserts at SW, and I REALLY didn't like it.
Overall, we enjoyed the show and the experience.....I think the old WDW Luau was better (Luau cove is a more appealing setting) and the costumes there were a little more authentic, but I haven't been to the new WDW show.
I would recommend going.
Questions??
