What's with the power outages??? It seems like a HUGE part of America is out of electricity. That's not really the part that scares me, the part that scares me is that they were talking earlier about capturing a major Al Qaedia (sp?) leader. What's going on??? Is it scaring anyone else???

They're talking about the outages in New York City and other parts of New York and Toronto--are there any outages in other parts of the country?

I am in North East CT. and the power went out for just a few minutes but is back on now.

Yep... Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit, Cleveland, Major Cities!

I am getting very nervous...

Get a grip!! The last thing people here need to see is a topic like yours.

Detroit is also on the list.

We are not about to die. Problems on the grid can cascade across large areas. Rememer the huge blackout in the early 80's that took out power for most of the western US? That one was caused by a squirill shorting out a transformer. I never read about an investigation, but I doubt the squirell had terrorist affiliations ;).

Even if it is a terrorist act, it will be OK. Lets wait awhile for the authorities to determine the problem and respond. We can only be victoms if we live in fear. I understand your concerns, but it really will be alright.

i'm in indianapolis and we still have power...thank goodness!!

dc still has power. everyone chill until we know more.

I am Upstate NY, and our power flicked, but came back on. CNN is saying that it is an overload to the Niagara Mohawk powergrid.

Lets all say a prayer for those stuck in elevators, subways, etc.

It's the domino effect, a major grid fails and falls onto backup grids which causes another overload, etc. etc.

Current report, definitely not terrorism. An overload problem. I feel for folks in NYC. Problems there include no busses trains or subways, no ac in office buildings with little window ventilation, people stuck in elevators, subways, trains, etc. and 90plus heat. If you are working downtown you may be stuck on a hot sidewalk for quite some time til you can get home. I would guess that all businesses will be closed so no water, drinks etc. Alot of cell phones are out also.

 that is a bit over the top for a title don't you think? Ok OP was changed, thanks mods.

We are fine here in Columbus. Hope everyone gets their power back soon.

We still have power here in NJ, but my husband who only works about ten miles away, does not. Weird.

We've got power here in Atlanta (well, in this large suburb of Atlanta at least). Let's all try to stay calm. {{{HUGS}}} for all our NY and northeast DISers.

MSNBC is reporting that the "government" is reporting that this is most definately NOT a terrorist attack, but a power outage that is very widespread.

Rueters news agency is reporting that this is NOT a terrorist attack. The outage was caused by an outage at a Manhattan power station that in turn caused problems with the grid.

NOPE. I was born in 1980 so the 80s are a bit of a blur to me :)

I'm sorry for my intense title on the thread. It's just the way our news was reporting it. I mean, we're way over here in Dallas and they break in with a special report telling us all about the major blackout. Sorry if I freaked anyone out, I just got a little scared there for a minute. They are now reporting that it is only a blackout.
