I have some friends that live up near Portland and would like to take a trip at the end of the summer to visit them. We are from Connecticut. While we're up there I'd like to make a vacation of it. It's myself my husband and our 2 girls 1 and 4 years. I'd like to rent a cabin on a lake or something like that. A place with a private bathroom in the cabin and a kitchen or kitchenette. I'd like to be able to take nature walks and sit and read a book, maybe cook outdoors. We'll also want to go see our friends and shop and have some meals out. I'm looking for a well run, cute place. Anyone have any ideas? :confused3

Several years ago we went to the Bar Harbor area and Acadia National Park. It was gorgeous and I really liked it. We stayed in a motel but there may be cabins available.

My SIL lives in Standish, ME, and talks about Sebago Lake all the time. It think it's about an hour away from Portland.

We are less than half an hour from Portland. You have to practically drive past our house to get there. We have a pool, a kitchen, a grill, and some woods you could walk around in. We have indoor and outdoor chairs you could sit in and read a book. Now a private bathroom might be a problem. :rotfl2:

Seriously, there are a ton of lakes in Southern Maine, and many less an hour's drive from the Portland area. You'd probably find what your looking for by browsing the classified ads in local newspapers. Usually this time of year, or a bit later, there are lots of ads from people looking to rent their lakeside cabin or camp, by the week, month, or season.

I don't have specific websites, but some papers to check would be:

The Portland Press Herald
Biddeford Journal Tribune
York County Coast Star

There may be some newspapers north of Portland that would also have some info. I'm just not sure what they are. Hope this helps!

We've been going to Ogunquit each year for the past 10 years. We now stay oceanfront in a place where little boys and girls will go to get us food and beverages while we lay by the pool, reading and sunning ourselves. If we want to walk, we take the Marginal Path to Perkins Cove. We like Ogunquit because for the exception of when we drive to Freeport to make our pilgrimage to LLBean, and to Day's Lobster Pound for lobster rolls, we don't move our car. Everything is within walking distance, or if we're tired, we take the trolley.

If you want a Maine Tour Book, link to http://www.visitmaine.com/guidebook/request.php and they'll send you information on the things you like to do.

I love Boothbay Harbor. I haven't been in years but the place is beautiful, summer or winter.

Sebago is a beautiful and wonderful place to bring a family. Alot of camping areas and cabins ........I hope you enjoy our beautiful state in the summer....

Sebago Lake is really nice, and depending where you stay, is about an hour from Portland. There are lots of places on the ocean too. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are beautiful, but are about 2.5-3 hours from Portland. Moosehead and Rangeley Lakes are both gorgeous, but are fairly far away.

Good luck!

Visitmaine.com has lots of information. Pick what area you want, and what you want to do and they have it or link you to it.

Old Orchard Beach is very popular. I love Freeport, Boothbay and Camden too. Acadia is a must see though it is several hours from Portland, especially with summer traffic.

Can't go wrong in Maine. Rustic and beautiful.

Sebago and Little Sebago Lakes are fairly close to Portland. There are lots of camps that you can rent. The prices vary considerably. I used http://www.krainin.com to find a rental. They are a reputable real estate agency and I have had great experiences with them in the past.

You're all really helpful, thanks. I certainly have a place to start. I love planning vacations! :yay:
