Maid Service Why's?

This may be something that has been covered but....

What is the logic for DVC members only to get maid service once every few days. It seems to me for what you are paying you should get it daily? I am very curious as to the reasons for this policy.

I can't defend the logic, only pass on to you what we are told: Ours is a "home away from home" experience that's more like condo than hotel living. In that context, maid service isn't necessary and it would add a lot to our dues.

That said, I usually order a full cleaning sometime during a visit so that we can be "on vacation."

And if we got daily service we'd be paying even more. Our dues cover 100% of the operating costs of the DVC resorts. Change room cleanings to daily and our Housekeeping budget could easily be 400-500% higher.

The dues may seem high, but they also reflect the dollars that Disney pays to maintain and staff the cash resorts.

If any DVC members want daily maid service, they are welcome to pay for it themselves. There is a published rate schedule for daily cleanings, and the front desk is happy to arrange it at check-in.

This is a timeshare, not a hotel. As mentioned, timeshares are homes away from home.

If you look at timeshares in general, you'll find that most have absolutely nothing in the way of maid service at all during the length of your stay. In this regard, Disney is an exception.

Others, such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, may have a trash/towel service midweek, similar to Disney, but not all do.

DVC does offer daily maid service as an option for those who want to pay for it separately.

And cost of the unit has nothing to do with it. Go to Hawaii, and buy a Hilton timeshare for $30,000 for a 2-B/R for just a single week. You still won't get daily housekeeping.

It's simple....our maintenance fees do not cover daily maid service. I didn't know what I would think about this; but honestly, I LOVE it!!!

I love knowing when I leave in the morning that no one will be entering my room while I am gone. It truly does add to the "home" feeling for me. We are so "quirky" about this that we usually cancel our cleaning while we are there. I certainly don't mind vacuuming and making the bed. I am someone who takes the trash out everyday just because, and we alway seem to have a 1 or 2 bedroom, so I end up washing at least one load of clothes everday anyway (now that I have stayed at DVC resorts, I cannot stand going home with dirty clothes, and I no longer pack so many....I plan on "re-using" them), so throwing the towels in the wash is no big deal.

I know I am strange, but I really like not having people enter my vacation "space"....I like it to be as private as possible.

I agree with Beca, I like the fact that we don't have to worry about someone coming into the unit. We have also downsized our packing, recycling our clothes. This way the people who really want it can still get it and everyone's not paying for it, only those who want it.

I can just see what would happen in the timeshare industry as a whole if one timeshare started providing daily maid service! Costs would go through the roof! No, the reason to buy a timeshare is to pre-pay a vacation or "vacation home" for an amount of time each year. "Home" is the operative word here. If you want maid service, stay in a hotel.

I didn't realize that timeshares operate without daily maid service. It also seems to be a perk that you can order a full clean up, if you feel its needed part of the way through your stay.

I remember one of the old timers saying early on daily maid service was included....but people didn't like the dues. So daily maid service became "fee for service" and DVC switched to a more timeshary schedule and lowered the dues.

Housekeeping is a major part of our dues, even with the limited cleanings we get now.

BTW, count us as another "like no maid service" folks. I now have grown to dislike maid service when I am staying in hotels too. I just hate that I have to plan around their nebulous schedule! If I want to take a liesurley bath in the middle of the day, I can't if maid service is still coming in.

You should also know that there IS a little provided maid service - on the 4th day of your stay the maid will come in a do a 'Trash and Towel' which means just that. And on the 7th day of your vacation (if you are staying longer), they will do a full clean. These are the 'normal' services that another poster was mentioning canceling.

I had forgotten just how much I dislike having someone come into my room on a daily basis. We stayed at Pop for a last minute trip last month. There were several days that we had to 'cruise' around the resort because housekeeping was in our room. And she was in there for a good 1/2 hr!!! We are tidy people and I still can't see what takes so long....make two beds, wipe down surfaces and replace towels (even though I left our used towels hanging neatly so as to not be replaced!!).
Give me DVC and no daily intrusions anyday. I much prefer taking care of myself. And in most cases I do a better job of picking up than they do!!!

there are timeshares that offer daily maid service and there are timeshares that trash and towel service, i own one in the Caribbean. I have to say, I love it, its a 3 bedroom unit, and having your room cleaned and sheets pressed and changed daily is a very nice treat, never worrying about towels is nice also. But we don't have a washer and dryer. that I miss. While at Disney, I really don't miss the service, with the larger units 1 and 2 bedrooms, you have room to hang your towels, the studios are a different story, what a cramp to have 4 people and towels hanging everywhere, we have had daily towel swaps while at Vero and its really only because they don't dry and we all like dry towels!!!

Count me as another who prefers not to have maid service. It's so nice to be able to take your time in the morning if you wish, or to come back and grab a shower and nap in the middle of the day without worrying about the maid wanting to come in.

Last year I went with DH on a business trip and stayed in a hotel. I was sick the 2nd day of the trip and wanted nothing more than to rest in a quiet room with the lights out. In spite of the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and a call to the front desk, the housekeeping staff knocked on that door every hour as if they were determined to come in and get that room cleaned. It just about drove me crazy! Give me my privacy any time!

Wow, even with a do not disturb sign out? I would have complained LOUDLY to the front desk on that one!

That's not quite right.

For any stay of 7 days or less, there is a T&T on day 4.

If staying 8 nights or longer, there is a Full Clean on day 4, and a T&T on day 8.

The cycle then repeats every additional 4-days of your stay.

FYI... here are dvc daily mousekeeping rates I found elsewhere on the web, they seem to be what I remember reading about in the dvc members guide.

Studio/Inn room: $25/day
1BR: $30/day
2BR: $40/day
Grand Villa/Beach Cottage: $60/day
Trash and towel service only: $10/day

We have two small children who are a lot of work to clean up after, and we do most of our eating in our 1br villa. Since we value coming back to a clean room, but do not want to waste our vacation time cleaning, we budget the extra cost for housekeeping every dvc vacation we take.

We're not very late sleepers and spend the bulk of our daylight hours in the parks, so being disturbed my housekeeping has never been an issue.

This is the kind of flexibility that makes DVC so great. Folks can design the stay they want and need!

If I want/need to use the room midday, I put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door, do the double lock thing that most hotels have on their doors these days, and do my thing.

I find that the maid will go on to the next room and then come back to mine.

At lots of places, that means they don't come in at all if the Do Not disturb sign is always on.
