Maid Service Why's?

Count me in as another one who LOVES not having the daily maid service. And yet, not having daily maid service was a major reason why we put off buying DVC so long. We finally bought "in spite of" not having daily maid service. We thought we'd really miss it. But we've loved it so much that on my last trip to a non-DVC hotel, I specifically asked that maid service just leave daily towels and coffee, and not enter the room to clean. I wonder they were figuring I had something illegal in there!

We also like the "non daily maid service". One advantage of many DVC homes is that you're very close to the parks- enough so to stop by the unit several times a day to drop off heavier clothing from the morning or pick up rain ware if weather looks iffy. Sometimes just to freshen up and take a break is nice. At other hotels we often come back to the room to find it isn't made up- we feel we can't relax with the house cleaning visit imminent. We've found if we try to find the maid or call housekeeping early and tell them we'll be out for the morning they can sometimes get the room done, but not always.

Anyway we're fairly neat people who clean up as we go and don't find any hardship in forgoing daily maid service, and even prefer it.

Do the DVC resorts offer a towel only option? If so how much?

We usually just call mouskeeping when we need new towels if it's on an off day. Or we try to snag someone when they're in the hallway doing the rooms around us. We haven't been charged for that as of yet.

If you select Mousekeeping for your stay, do you tip the Mousekeeper, or is the extra that you are paying go to the Mousekeeper. In other words, does Disney take extra you pay and just give the Mousekeeper more work, or is it given directly or partially to the mousekeeper so they are making more.

Just Curious?

It took a little getting used to, but once I found the "trash room" at the end of the hallway my karma was good.

Newbie questions, when in a studio:

1) We take our trash to...?

2) Does DVC provide trash bags or should I bring them?

3) Is it considered poor form to swap/out Villa towels with, or borrow, pool towels? This sounds tacky, but I thought I read a post recommending this before.

Now, I'm curious as to whether the pool towels are the same type/quality as in the Villas. Do I need to bring beach towels?

Thanks.

1. You can take it to any of the outside trash containers. You would need to find where they're located at the resort you're staying at.

2. Small trash bins with liners will be in your room. Unless you have a lot of trash, you should be alright.

3. Most resorts discourage swapping pool towels with regular towels because pool towels have to be washed differently from the way regular resort towels are cleaned, so I've been told. This is ignored often by guests. Some resorts and other timeshares we've been to will often have different color towels for the pool simply so they can keep them separate. For example we may check into one of our other timeshares and find two sets of towels: White and Blue. Use the white ones in the room, take the blue ones to the pool.

At OKW the trash room is at the bottom of the stairs outside the villas I think and at BCV, BWV and VWL we found trash rooms and places to put recyclable items somewhere along the corridor. One time we were right next door - very convenient. We take the laundry soap in tablet form and if in a studio do the laundry and or towels while enjoying the pool. I am one who really likes not having someone in the unit while we are gone. We usually try to leave everything neat but do not use the vacuum or scrub out the baths before we leave - we have vacuumed if there is a cereal or chip disaster but don't feel we have to clean every day or even before we leave. I do try to put all the towels together and leave the beds turned down so they know they were used. It truly gives that home away from home feeling as far as I can see. Now if I could just get enough points to spend the winter there after I retire.

Most timeshares in the US do not provide daily maid service. Most provide no maid service at all. Many do provide beach towels and allow you to exchange them for clean ones. The Caribbean and MX do provide daily maid service at many resorts. And nothing is keeping you from getting daily maid service if you're willing to pay for it as there is the option and a price list.

Due to the various arrival dates and times we will be switching villas within our group. I really don't need extra full cleanings just clean linens. Can I purchase set of sheets as well as towels and change out the linens myself?

Thanks Caskbill, guess we'll play it by ear (Mickey's :) ) once we arrive as to the towel issue. Just want to make sure we don't commit a faus pax 1st time @ DVC.

Just to let you know this can get to be a hot topic. Using pool towels at the pool is expected and if I need to take pool towel as a wrap around to get back to my room I return it the next time I'm at the pool. But taking pool towels to supplement the room supply can be seen as trying to "beat the system" to avoid laundering the room towels or avoid paying the surcharge for extra towels. No Flame intended JMHO.

If we are staying for 5 nights and we wanted towels everyday, would we just pay for 3 days? Since you start out your stay with a supply of towels and they replinish the supply on the 4th day. Is this right?

Timeshares generally don't have housekeeping service. I love it, makes me think I don't really have to lock up my laptop, and I don't have to remember to put the sign on the door after coming in from PI so it doesn't get knocked on at 8 AM.

You can always pay for daily housekeeping, it's not a whole lot.

Basicaly that's correct. Assuming you only really use your towels in the morning, and if we assume you check-in on a Sunday, then

Monday morning use the towels that you started with, and get fresh towels deleivered later that day.

Tues use the fresh towels you received monday, and get fresh towels delivered later that day

Wed use the fresh towels you received monday. No need to order fresh towels as T&T is this day.

Thur use the fresh T&T towels you got, and have fresh towels delivered that day

Friday (check-out) Use the fresh towels you received on Thursday.

So, when you check-in on Sunday, you order for fresh towels to be delivered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Thanks Caskbill! Just the info I was looking for.
