It seems the fact Magnetic North is moving has hit the news. We watched an amazing video on this a few years ago which says this happens from time to time and that there is geological evidence the poles have actually flipped in the past. If you are interested check this out, the physics of polarity is fascinating, even if i can only follow a little bit of it.

The video was made by NOVA and is called: "Magnetic Storm: Nova" from 2003, it would be neat if they put it on Discovery or something like that since this is current. I love how NOVA makes this stuff so digestible for regular folks like me.

Here is a link with a Timeline: www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/timeline.html

This is the rather uninformed article I found in the news today:

This is one of my most favorite earth/space phenomena out there. It's very interesting, and most people don't know that it occurs.

Another fun thing to read about (if you're into polar shifts, etc.) is about the axial precession of the Earth, and how the "North Star" has actually changed over the Earth's existence.

Wow Toad Passenger, thanks for that, now you've given me something else to look up on a boring snow day:goodvibes

I keep hoping the magnetic pole disturbance will give me an aurora to look at. I am not going up north to freeze looking for one but if it happens here YAY! Such a big YAY!!!

What's uninformed about that article? It seemed pretty straightforward to me. Some of the comments are probably uninformed (I didn't read them) but what's wrong with the article itself?

:thumbsup2

I didn't find anything wrong with the article, either...everything they stated seemed factual to me. :confused3

I think it's perfectly newsworthy to report that the main runway of the Tampa airport has to shut down for a couple of weeks, and the fact that it's due to the gradual movement of the magnetic north pole over the last forty years is rather interesting!

The problem with the article is the writer didn't even do the little bit of fact finding I did to explain the normalcy of the situation, hence the understandably upset comments. As presented in this article, the shift seems to be a one time sort of thing without reference towards past events. If I didn't know this was normal it would freak me out too, it also explains some of the weird weather phenomena we've been having.

In all fairness, there are some links on the sidebar of the webpage for more information on the phenomenon. I also don't think the language of the article was particularly alarmist.

I'm interested, though, on how (and which) weird weather phenomena are being produced by the shifting magnetic north pole?

Check out the NOVA special, electromagnetism has a great deal of influence over our world considering so many molecules are polarized, water all by itself is enormously influential.
