as first timers, can someone please explain the magnetic door signs. see you 12/2 on the wonder.:wave2:

Do a lot of people put signs on their door like this? I am not sure if my DH would like people to know where we are.

Normal people don't.... just the crazy DISers (of which I'm one)........(People don't know about it or think about it unless they've seen it before - or if they're DISers)

It's been fun when we've done it - and it quickly let's you know which room is yours......

Didn't have them on our first cruise - didn't know about it.... Had them on our second... and will cover the door on our next cruise....

I guess you could put anything on the magnets if you didn't want your real names there, huh? Are these large magnets or just small ones put behind the signs? Does sound like fun!

our cabin steward loved it too, as it helped her learn our names. I thought it was great...remember you are on a ship with a ton of others that you will never see again, but are all there for fun and excitement. I can't think of a reason you wouldn't want someone to know your name on the boat? I think it's a way to get to know people.

You can buy rolls of magnets at any craft store and attach them to the back of a peice of paper, or I heard there is some sort of paper you can magnatize, but that was way beyond me!

The best suggestion I have ever seen was to make a sign and laminate it, then hang a permanent pen and put a sticky note suggesting other passengers make notes, say HI, or whatever...great scrapbook item! have fun!

There were a lot of people on our cruise with door signs. I made about 20 of them for people on my Cruise Meets thread and there were quite a few other ones too. I use the Avery Magnet Sheets. You just put them in your printer like a regular piece of paper. I buy them at Walmart, $7.84 for a pack of 5. People are still asking me to make signs for their upcoming cruises.

Thanks for the info--I will get some at Walmart the next time I am there. I have until the end of January but with the holidays coming up--I am sure that I will lose track of time!:wave2:

I've been on two DCL cruises, but our next cruise will be the first we will have a door sign. We're excited about this, but I do not plan on putting our real names on them.

Some people like to protect their privacy more than others, so might not like the idea of putting their real names on their door signs. For example, a single mom traveling with children or a woman traveling alone, with or without children, might not want her real name outside her door. Also, folks who, perhaps, may have been a victim of crime in their past (identity theft, etc), might be reluctant to advertise who they are, even if they will never see these people again or even if they feel quite safe on a Disney ship. So all that heavy stuff aside, we are looking forward to decorating our door! :) ::yes::

I may be paranoid, but I have young children who will absolutely wander off with anyone who calls their name. DS is 5 and would be much less likely to go with a stranger that didn't know his name.

And maybe we are very rich and famous, but trying to enjoy a private cruise in our cat 10 stateroom!

I was on the 10/23 western cruise and I made a lot of magnets to put on our door. My mom was afraid it would look tacky, but it didn't it looked great. We had lots of good comments about our door. People were actually telling other people to look at our door because they were impressed. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We had a sign for the door, but did not use our names on it -- I don't want to advertise my kids' names. There are plenty of other ways to make the sign your own, though -- we put a picture of the path of Hurricane jeanne on our sign, since we cruised 2 days after she hit Florida.

I am doing the same for our 2nd cruise in May. I have designed several for different days/nights along with several Mickey heads in different colors. I am using my DIS logon so that other DISer's wil recognize us(also no realnames) if you have kids. use initials or nicknames instead of real names for security reasons. Here is an example but it is not good quality for post here.

My DH is super paranoid about things like this, but I figured it wouldn't matter. I call my kids by name all of the time, and someone could overhear and look as we go in or come out of our room. I would also hope that they kids will always be with a responsible adult, either in the care of the counselors in the club or with us, their parents.

I would be more concerned about having our last name on the door, because then someone might try to charge something with our name and the SR number, saying that they lost their KTTW.

But I am sure that Disney would ask for ID hopefully, so even that shouldn't be a concern.

I say do what you want and have a great time! Hakuna Matata- no worries!:p

I didnt know about this on my last cruise i will definitiy being doing this on my next one in aug. Ill have my name as well as my moms and cousins plus a happy bday sing to myself (it will be my b-day when were on the cruise) and my cousin a happy bday which will be a week after we get off the cruise. Maybe i can make one that maches are shirts.

:cake: :bday: Hmmmm.... a birthday door sign.. thanks for the idea, turtle51. I hadn't thought about a birthday sign. Maybe I can find a nice image of a birthday cake for my sign. I already made one Wonder cruise sign, but I guess you can't have too many signs!

I just bought a cardboard parrot to put on our door. It made the door easy to recognize, but it didn't give any information about who we were. There didn't seem to be anybody else close by that did anything.

But when walking down the hall with lots of rooms, ours was always easy to spot!!!

Out of curiosity, of all of you whom have actually posted a door sign with either your first names or surnames on it, has anyone actually ever had a problem with someone using this information to try to charge things to your room, lure your children or any other problems like this?

There are a good amount of DIS'ers on this board whom have actually put names on their signs. It would be interesting to see if any fears about putting information on the signs are founded.

Thanks!
