Just remember, your magic bands have two transmitters in them.
One is basically a proxy card type of chip. Very similar to what many of us have at work that unlocks doors, this is the chip that is used when you hold the band up to one of the readers. While not really getting in the technology, the point here is that the proxy card reader portion of your magic band should always work. There is no battery for that, it just works.
The other transmitter is similar to the EZPass readers that are on your car. They reach about 30 feet, and have a built in battery. That battery only lasts about 2 years.
It is the second transmitter that gives you a lot of the extras. By extras, I mean things like ride photos, and Storymaker. That is what Disney calls the personalization's that you may see at It’s a small world, Rock ‘n roller coaster, Haunted Mansion and Expedition Everest, where your name comes up in the story, mostly on some sort of poster. I haven’t noticed it at HM in a while, and they may do those types of things in other places. Just a fun way to personalize your trip, but again, you will need a band that is less than 2 years old to make those things work…
Lastly, we did deactivate some of my wife’s oldest bands on our last trip. The hotel said they were interfering with the door. Not sure if that was really the case, but was not a big deal…
