Can someone explain the benefits of a Magical gathering instead of just making a standard resevation for say...10 people. Why shouldn't I just call and make a reservation for 3 rooms at such and such resort?

Supposedly they will attempt to keep your room assignments together. There are also special Grand Gathering "events" that are only for Magical Gatherings. We will be having a Magical Gathering next month. We will see if it makes a difference in our Disney experience.

Hey Wannabe,
I'm from N.O. also having a Magical Gathering event on Mardi Gras Day at the Good Morning Gathering at Tony's Town Square;
staying @ ASMo 2/6-2/12; will have a lime green Mickey head on black backpack

MG trys to help keep your rooms together (though a request tot he resort and double checking at checkin will do that as well). It also gives you an option to spend more on some very unique experiences. I have done MG before as well as organized my own families special events in the parks (I am an event coordinator by profession, so it is easy for me and I have the resoures).

If you are not looking to spend anything above rooms and admission, I would avoid the MG desk like the plague, they still don't seem to have their act together.

We are having a Grand Gathering in 2 weeks. I did not book rooms through them, but I did book our group into 2 of the special events for Magical Gatherings. We are doing the Safari Celebration dinner and the Magical Fireworks Voyage. I found the only real benefit to joining as a Magical Gathering was the access to the special offerings only a group of this size can participate in. The actual group that handles the booking had major computer issues and it took a minimum of 45 minutes on the phone to book each event. Any other dining experience we have booked had to go through group dining anyway because of our party size.
Hopefully the special events will be worth all the time and effort I spent on the phone!

Hey LJONES,
We will be doing the Magical Fireworks Voyage on the 6th and the Safari Dinner on the 9th. We are staying at the WL. I can't believe it is just a month away! You guys are right about the Magical Gathering dept not having it together. I don't get the having to make several reservations for the same event? It just adds to their confusion (and ours)!

Well, thanks for all of the repies! I think I'll just book everything myself. The special dinners and safari's, and such, aren't that a big of a deal, for us (unless they are offering good prices, on them.)
