So ME will collect your bags at the baggage claim and ship them to your room. What happens of your bags don't make it on your plane? Doesn't it make filing a claim for lost baggage a bit difficult? I only ask because in the last coupe of years we have had an inordinate amount of "lost" bags.
I'll answer you first.....ME tagged bags are taken off the plane and put in a seperate area as soon as they come off that plane. They are then sorted by resort area, and put on the appropriate truck for resort delivery. Once at the resort, it is up to Bell Services to get the bags to each room. When you checkin at the DME Welcome desk, you will be asked how many bags there are in your parties group. If there is an issue with your bags, DME will track them for you. Of course, you most likely won't know if there is an issue for a few hours.
As for DME vs a towncar service...I have used both, as well as Mears. Never will I use Mears again...awful, awful. Okay..moving on. I have used several different towncar companies, and they were all good. The price was about $100-115, plus tip, r/t, for 3 of us, but could have fit 4 comfortably. Timing? Well, the one time I had only carryon bags, it took me about 45 mins from deplaning to POP Century. When I had checked bags to claim, it took me about an hour to hour 10 mins to get from the plane to my resort.
With DME it has taken me from 50-85 mins...depending on which stop I was. The one time it took the 85 mins was when I was at POP, and AKL was the first stop (usually POP is the first stop, with CSR being number two). And add to that the huge number of people who had claimed their luggage and brought it to the bus with them, adding time at each of those first two stops....this is what accounts for the 85 mins. It most likely would have been closer to 75 mins if there hadn't been a luggage delay at the two stops before mine.
Yes, you do have to wait up to three hours after checking in at the resort for your bags. But, I always, always, always pack anything I'm going to need for the first half day of my stay..anywhere, not just WDW. If your bags go to St. Louis and you are headed for WDW, well, it's gonna be awhile before your bags get to you, no fault of DME. Then, when you get to your resort, you can checkin, perhaps be able to get into your room, maybe go for a swim (put that swim suit in the carryon!!) or grab a bite to eat. Then head to the parks. That's what I routinely do...and when I return to my room later in the day, the bags have 'magically' appeared.
I just can't justify spending over $100 to have a car all to myself anymore. I enjoy the excitement filled bus. IF I want groceries, I use a grocery delivery service...I spend about $25 extra (delivery charge plus tip) and don't have to wander around a strange grocery store...the groceries are delivered right to my room. But, others have other ways of doing things on vacation. Not saying my way is the 'right' way.
