Magical Express - Never Again

Says who?

Luggage transfer is separate, both directions.

Not for incoming. (For outgoing, you're right, it's part of RAC, which is basically just curbside check-in, except the curb is at your hotel.) Check this thread:

http://www.disboards.com/threads/dme-luggage-only-dont-want-to-ride-the-bus.2015788/

As the thread points out, your luggage should get delivered even if you don't ride the bus, but DME is intended to be a transport service between airport and hotel with the perk of luggage delivery, not a luggage delivery service.

Well, things seem better today. We
got off the plane at 11:15. Checked in at desk by 11:35, even after a pit stop. We're staying at YC. We waited in line about 20 minutes before we were went to a bus. With everyone boarding & storing luggage we were on the road in just under an hour from deplaning.

In Sept we waited an hour for our luggage with our town car driver. So about the same time wise.

Can I just ask 1 thing for those that rent cars. Doesn't it take 20-30 minutes to get bag, then shuttle to rental car and then drive? Seems to me that would take @1-1.5 hours total until you get to resort.

Like I said last week we had to wait @30 min for the bus which was LONG but overall. I longer than the rest
two weeks ago it took me 15 minutes to get my luggage. From there I walked out got into my rental car because I did online check in from home and was in my Disney room in 1 hr 12 minutes after landing.

I always wonder at these ME threads where so many are on the "too long and inconvenient so rent a car" bandwagon. I LOVE the convenience of ME (and I don't even get the added bonus of luggage transfer). I'm sad we are staying offsite this year and won't get to take advantage of this great service.

In reality, it's a service in which the customer receives service commensurate with what he or she pays -- nothing. The only positive is that it's free.

Disney isn't giving us anything. We ALL pay for DME (and the parking lots and the buses and the boats etc). Just because it isn't a line item on our hotel invoice doesn't mean we aren't paying for it. :)

Using DME you don't have to get your bags, so what is your time line before getting your bags? That is the true comparison. I bet you have to add at least 20 minutes for that.

There are plenty of people who have to get their bags. Most of the time we do, because if we fly from the west coast during the day we're getting in after 10.

Even those that claim it doesn't, use up that time changing clothes or walking where ever. Or they stroll leisurely, which means they walk slowly, otherwise they have to wait for their bags. Or they have to be members of what ever car rental agency is the cheapest this trip. Which means they spend time, before they leave, joining whichever web site they need to join.

But I'm not changing and walking slowly in order to take up the time. I'm doing that anyway. Orlando is hot and I don't want to start sweating from the first moments we're there. On our recent flight we caught the plane at 11:45pm from seatac, where it was 39-ish degrees. I was wearing warm running tights, wool socks, a big warm sweatshirt, two scarves (and had a blanket and pillow as well). DH and DS were wearing jeans and warm tops. If we didn't change we would have melted LOL. I like to wash my face and maybe put makeup on if I didn't have it on before. I did this even when I met my cousin at the airport and we took DME in. There's no point in walking briskly through the airport; I'll be doing enough of that once on property. And because there's time involved in those things, the baggage is generally coming off the carousels by then, the few times we are landing in the luggage-delivery time period. (ETA: I said that wrong...and I can't figure out how to fix it)

Joining a car rental agency isn't hard LOL. It's a matter of moments. Who wouldn't join the rental agency? Or we've done it already because we travel elsewhere.

Mentioning those things isn't some sort of false way of showing that renting a car is shorter. Those things, for my family, are happening either way.

And honestly I haven't had any bad DME experiences (unlike on-property transportation), and am perfectly happy to use it if we have no plans for a car (though we usually have plans that need a car). But I'm taking that time anyway, to change and freshen up and not start sweating earlier than I have to. :)

Whew!

But THIS thread started specifically from yesterday. The line was INSANE; truly truly long. There was nothing convenient about that line yesterday. I didn't want to take pictures of hundreds of random strangers to show the line, plus hubby and son were way ahead of me and I didn't want to lose them during the time to get my phone out etc. But it was absolutely atrociously long.

This isn't a normal "ew DME" thread. :)

I waited around an hour, maybe a little over, the 1st of October. I'd never used it before so I was caught completely off guard with how long it took. But I figured with it being a Saturday, around noon that could've caused a large influx of people all at once. I hope next time is a little better but it'll be Memorial Day so I'm not counting on it!

If I'm going to pay then I prefer a rental so I have the car during the vacation.
If you think you'll use the rental once you get to disney, then it's a good idea to get it. Otherwise, cabs are the quickest way to get around. Even between parks - better than parking in the lots or waiting for busses.

When we used to rent a car at the airport, we wasted time picking it up and dropping it off and then never used it once at disney.

Whatever you end up doing, I'm sure it'll work out great!

Have a great trip!

As posted earlier, after bathroom break the luggage starts to roll on out for pickup.

It does take us a bit longer to get to resort but that includes a grocery stop:).

ME is nice $ saving option but we prefer to rent a car. I don't need any practice standing in line before I get to the parks lol.

I do factor in a few hours before scheduling anything in the parks, either via ME or renting a car. Last thing I want to do is start out a vacation stressed out.

At least this sort of thread will help people be realistic in their expectations as to current wait times for ME & can decide what is best for them.

It really depends on the person. For me, I don't check luggage, so with a rental car, I can literally get to the Epcot front gate less than an hour after my flight hits the ground. That's incredibly valuable to someone like me, who rarely is in the parks for more than two days at a time or so.

It really depends on where your resort lines up on the drop off list too. Last month, I was at the Poly an hour and 20 minutes after landing via Magical Express. I stayed at the Poly 1 night then moved to Kidani. The next day, it took 2 hours 40 minutes for my family to get from the airport to join me. They went straight to the bus with no line, set on the bus forever, then hit 3 other resorts first. Going from Kidani to the airport, it is the first stop and takes forever. Both times we've had to book it to security and hope for short lines. Last year we had to run to catch our flight, no bathroom breaks, food, nothing. This year we had about 10 minutes til boarding. Now we know if staying at Kidani, we rent. Beware though, some of those car rental lines are longer than I've ever seen a magical express line.

This clearly isn't a huge benefit and not the case for lots of people, but I am SO excited for Magical Express for our January trip because it will be the first time in 7 years that I've flown with my family without carseats. SO FREAKING EXCITED! Kids are big enough to not need carseats on the plane any more, so avoiding a taxi/rental car means we can avoid carseats. Yay!

But Fingers crossed the crazy lines this week were because of the holidays and that January isn't so bad.

Disney! If you try to book luggage transfer only, through DME, you aren't allowed to. Having baggage handled is supposed to be a perk of riding the bus. Now...can you tag your checked bags, allow DME to handle the bags, and then not ride the bus, but take a rental car? Probably. We haven't heard of anything that Disney is doing to discourage this practice.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, I rented a car at MCO. I don't usually rent a car but was going to need one once or twice that trip so just rented for the entire week. We got our bags from baggage claim (about 15 mins total wait time), went down to the Alamo counter..had to go there since I needed to add my dh to the reservation), that took about 15 mins total, walked across the street to the lot, chose a car and off we went. I think I was at BLT about 80 mins after landing! Not too bad.

And I had been seriously thinking about cancelling the rental car for next week! Maybe not.

I came on here specifically looking for suggestions as we are flying in on the Saturday during ProBowl so I'm betting it'll be crazy. We've both rented and taken ME but this time I'll be traveling with 3 kids (7,5,2) solo to Kidani for a split stay. It looks like Kidani is last on ME drop off so I can only imagine the melt downs we could possibly experience after 2 flights in the early morning then arriving to crazy lines at ME. The extra $200 is worth starting off our trip on a sane note. Well as sane as possible doing this by myselfo_O

There are no set bus routes for the DME buses, just so you are aware.

I just looked it up and the stadium is in downtown Orlando, which isn't really that close to wdw. I can't imagine the hordes staying at wdw, taking dme, and planning to travel up/over 4 for the game. Wouldn't those people be getting rental cars?

Right, but there is a method they use to move the masses and it appears they are usually run where Kidani is last.

It was rough trying to get a DVC reservation for that weekend but that could be due to other reasons. I also tried to book with a military discount and that was unavailable as well. I know they are doing events at the ESPN complex to include games, races and meets plus the parade at MK on Saturday. I was researching car rentals when we made the plans so I booked early, just in case we decided to go that way. Glad I did because my rental is now up to tripe what I booked!

I will not take the DME anymore when we have late flights. My daughter and I arrived just before 11pm, got our luggage quickly (a surprise for us) and made it to DME in record time. Since we were getting in so late we opted to stay at Art of Animation for 1 night prior to going to our DVC. On a side note this was in January. We got on a bus right away, then waited and waited and waited. I looked at my watch and it was almost an hour. By the time we checked in and walked to our room it was well after 1 am. Never again will I take the DME late at night. I will say that in early November I went to see my son and was going to CBR. That wait was reasonable. I am assuming that because there's not a lot of people coming in late, Disney takes it time in order to fill the seats of the bus to a certain level.

The name "Magical Express" is a misnomer. In reality, it's a service in which the customer receives service commensurate with what he or she pays -- nothing. The only positive is that it's free.

I'm sympathetic to the fact that travelers have different budgets, and for some, free transportation to and from the airport might be an extremely important factor. I begrudge nobody in that situation. But if you can afford another option, it's hard to justify taking Magical Express if you value your time.
It really isn't free. Everyone who books a room with Disney is paying for it.
