As I understand it, on our return trip, no matter what airline we fly we cannot check our bags in at the resort because of customs. Can anyone confirm this for me. Thanks. :)

It depends what airline you are flying. If you are flying one of the airlines that allows resort checkin then you can checkin at your resort. I don't know that exact airlines that allow resort checkin off hand. I do know that if you are flying from Orlando to Canada then you can't use the resort checkin. Southwest isn't part of the resort checkin offer either (although I wish they would be at some point). Also note that you can't resort checkin overweight bags.

Well we are flying one of the "participating airlines": United. We are NOT flying direct to Canada but rather through Chicago. So maybe we have to clear customs in Chicago and can use resort check-in?

You won't clear customs in Chicago!
There aren't any Canadian customs in US airports, at least that I know of???
Call ME and ask if you can check in at the resort. I don't think you can because your final destination is Canada. Your pick up will also be 4 hours earlier then your departure instead of 3 hours because of the international flights rules with ME. You could get the 3 hour pick up if you tell them your return flight is only MCO - Chicago, not Canada.

How are you getting from Chicago home? This might make a difference if you are changing alrlines in Chicago or if your bags are being tagged directly home. A lot of factors to consider really.

The only way you could use Resort Check in (based on the routing indicated in the thread) is if your bags were only checked through to Chicago (and you physically picked up your bags in Chicago, and re-checked them for your flight to Canada. In effect, this would make your flight from Orlando a domestic flight, and eligible for Resort Check In (assuming you are flying on a airline that participates in Resort Check In).

Since you only CONNECT in Chicago, and your final destination is not within the USA, you are not eligible for Resort Check In - regardless of the airline to which you are flying.

There are rumours some international travellers may be eligible for Resort Check In in the near future, but this is still speculative.

At the end of our May 2007 trip, we could not check our bags in for the airline (Westjet) at Magic Express, but they did take our bags in the morning and deliver them with us to the airport. At the airport we had to then take our bags and check them in at the Westjet counter.

There are participating U.S. airlines that are eligible for ME check in, though. If you were flying through one of those airlines you could do it. However, that's only because you would still have to be carrying your own luggage when you go through customs at the border.
