MAGICal Christmas 2008 - December 20, 2008

We thought about using our DVC points for the cruise but instead decided to use them for our trip in August. It cost way to many points for a cruise. We are now snowed/iced in. First it snowed then it strted to ice a froze the snow into place. At least we still have power. Looks like snow day number five tomorrow. I know my students are thrilled.

i know that convential wisdom says to rent the points and book cash, but we just like the ease of booking thru ms. plus i did some calculating before vakl add on last year and i don't think that once it all said and done in 2042 the cost will be all that different for points users.

we will be driving, a little less than cindy's drive from chicagoland, we usually drive to tallahassee for the night and then get to the world about lunchtime. last (06) christmas we drove all the way to gainesville in one shot, due to nbc changing game time to sunday night. last labor day trip we left after school and drove to baton rouge, makes for a long second day, should've gutted it up and drove to pensacola.

i have just caught up on the whole thread, btw what happens to the posts from the other thread when they merge? i couldn't tell if they got put in here or what.

we did the mvmcp last christmas, member discount night, i think that makes it more crowded, it was rainy and drizzly most of the night, kind of a miserable parade, and jordan was pretty much out by then, but it cleared for fireworks, complete with tinkerbell, but i'm not sure that i would go on dvc night again. we forgot to get our comp photo, of course after the showers who wanted to get their picture taken?

being another christmas baby myself, i had a lot of the same experiences. a little luckier that it was early, my mom instituted a rule that we wouldn't start christmas until after my day, but i remember a reindeer cake one year. it frustrates the kids who want to start decorating at thanksgiving, but i make them wait, (don't want a live tree in the house more than two weeks, anyway).

we made our second hhi trip two summers ago, be sure to eat at the sea shack, it was one of our favorites. don't know if we'll go back to sea pines again, plenty of stuff to do on the rest of the island. but we really like it there and vero as well, we went there at labor day for our second time.

angie, my fil is a cm, works in security. he retired and then just went back last year, basically to pay for this cruise. he is at the sports complex now, but worked all over the world, so you may have run across him out there. he got us onto the pooh ride when they were doing the cm only rides.

i think i have gone on too long, but i was just rying to catch up a little bit. i know there is something else i wanted to reply to, ...maybe later.

i just remembered one thing, dd rachel is the theodore chipmunk fan from a couple of pages back, who posted prematurely to our booking the cruise. but it is all good now, cause here we are.

Hilton Head is our summer hangout as well. Who knows, maybe we've been there in the summer months at the same time? Stranger things have happened. We love the Sea Shack, even my non-fish eating child loves to go there. We'll be dragging Amy & Diana there this July. We knew it was good when the locals started showing up for lunch. I can't believe how crowded it gets in there. Rachel Ray did them some good in that department, but I've heard the reason there is abolutely no indication that she was ever there is because it wasn't a pleasant experience for the Sea Shack to have her filiming there.

Another great one to try - even smaller - is Just Pasta in Coligny Plaza. :thumbsup2

Good evening everyone!!! How is everyone on TGIF?

It's VERY cold and rainy here. Just plain miserable, if you ask me at 41 degrees and spitting rain. I HATE IT! It's supposed to be back into the seventies and sunny come Monday so it is going to be a very long weekend.:sad1:

We tried to price airline tickets, but unfortunately it is too soon. According to travelocity and expedia, we can start looking next Friday. Rick said they should be the cheapest when they first come out with the prices because that is when they have the most seats available, and with economy in trouble like it is right now, he wants to purchase our tickets ASAP!!

Well, Mitchell starts basketball tonight, he has practice at 7:45pm. So now we have both baseball and basketball practices/games. We will busy for the next couple of months, right?

Talk to everyone soon!
Shannon

Shannon, The weather here is just as yucky but as you said TGIF. We had some snow last night and now we are supposed to have temp around 20 degrees. I so need to go to Florida.

Atleast we are busy too. It makes me not think about the cold. Between dance, Brownies, and my classes we have a crazy schedule. I am a full time student at a local college getting my teaching degree.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Angie

9.9 degrees with a wind chill of -2 right now. It's suppose to drop even further tonight :cold: :cold: :cold: with a high of -4 tomorrow. :scared1: Our DS13 is off to hunt and ski for the weekend. I hope he packed every layer we imagined he might need. I'd hate to have a popsicle return home on Sunday.

We just got in from a Cub Scout Ice Skating event. DS7 is in the shower now trying to warm up. Good thing it was inside, but still, it got rather cold after sitting there for a couple of hours. It was a tough job watching all those kids fall on the ice. ;)

Enjoy your weekends, everyone.

We haven't seen the sun here in 2 days, it's been very gloomy. I'm having flashbacks of a NY winter only it's still really warm and humid. Right now it's 67, high today is 78. :rolleyes1

Welcome Phil and Family. Funny you say you usually stop in Tallahassee - that's where we call home.

Lissa, I don't think I knew you had 39 rolls of tp. I only needed ours once and that was in Pisa - and I was SO EXCITED that I had it with me (LOL). I used hand-wipes ALL THE TIME but as for the TP, that was the only time I needed it. Although I do keep some in my travel bag now because you just never know :)

Cindy - that's funny you said that you and your DS got off the ship in Cozumel to make sure you could say he was in Mexico. On our first cruise in Dec. 2005, the boys were 8 and 9 - and we didn't get to stop at Cozumel but went to Costa Maya instead. Because we were very unsure of Costa Maya, we didn't plan anything for that day, but we did make the boys get off the ship so they could say that they had been in Mexico :) As it turned out, just as we were getting off, it started to rain, so I took the boys back on the ship, checked them into the Lab and then wandered into the Port area for a look around. There was another ship there at the same time so the Port area was really busy. DH had stayed off the ship and wandered on his own - but he couldn't buy anything because all he had was his ID and KTTW Card because I had the cash :) I kept looking for him while doing some browsing but didn't find him but I did find an Internet Cafe for $3 for 1/2 hour so I sent some emails and a quick update to DISBoards. That's where DH found me (and somehow he wasn't surprise - ha ha).

Anyway, because we didn't really get to see much of Costa Maya and because we really wanted to go to Cozumel but didn't get to, and because the Dec. 2008 will be a double-dip at Castaway Cay, we are very excited about this trip (well, DH and I are because here we are 11 months out and I *STILL* haven't blabbed to the children). :cheer2:

Hi Everyone! I hope everyone is having a great weekend so far! The sun finally came out today, but still only in the upper forties.:scared:

When we went on our first DCL cruise in 3/07, Mitchell, Melissa and I decided to stay on the ship when we docked at Cozumel. Rick and Morgan went horseback riding there and enjoyed themselves. We have been to Mexico several times given the fact that we LIVE 10 minutes from the border and go to Progresso, Las Flores, and Reynosa on a pretty regular basis. When we first went over the border, I was just sure that we would not be able to get back into the U.S and would be stuck in Mexico. However, as I learned that day and have become disgusted with in the years since that first visit, is HOW EASY it is to cross the border into Mexico and back:sad2: They barely stop cars coming and going over the border, so it doesn't surprise me that we have an immigration problem in the U.S. When we lived in Michigan, we would routinely cross the border into Canada and we had a MUCH MORE difficult time coming and going, but Mexico! Ha!Ha! What a joke:laughing: I no longer worry about crossing the border. It's as simple as going to the mall for a day of shopping, which is sad to say.:guilty:

It is super cheap to get travel plans to Cozumel, Cancun, Puerta Villarta, etc... from where we live because it is just a hop, skip and a jump from us.
Lots of weekend vacations to those spots taken with ease and CHEAP!! Just don't drink the water!!!:rotfl2: Now Costa Maya we have never been to, so we are excited to visit a new place!!!!

We are about to watch Disturbia. I don't think it's appropriate for kids, even though it's rated PG-13, so they are going to watch TMNT in their room. Has anyone seen it. IT has the transformers kid it and is supposedly pretty good. We'll see!

Shannon

shannon, having been a lone star lifer, i've always known about the ease of coming and going across the southern border. the funny thing is the only time i've ever been to mexico is on our two derailed disney eastern caribbean cruises. i want to go to cozumel and rent a jeep or something and drive around. the first time we went on fury catamaran excursion, which was great and then dw and i walked downtown to shop. last time we went on bus to beach area away from town, with a small shopping area, it was ok, but kind of expensive.

we actually did a double dip at cc on that first cruise we went to cozumel, since they were having trouble getting port stops because of the storm, we went to cc and left for the night then turned around and went back the next day. it pretty cool because half the people didn't get off the ship the second day. ah, konch koolers two days in a row, uhmmm.

nothing as extreme as you have cindy or angie, but for us a day when the sun is out and it struggles to get above 40 is not what we signed up for. back below freezing tonight and then warm up until wednesday, when the next polar express shows up, this time we may get some ice and snow into thursday. i guess it is winter.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and is enjoying the day off if you are off from work. We had 4 straight days of snow started Wednesday afternoon and snowed on and off all the way through Saturday evening. I'm sick of snow and they are calling for it again tonight. At this rate we are only going to have 3 nine weeks instead of four. Thankfully there are no guidelines for private schools and we do not have to change our last day like the public schools have had to.

Tried to get plane tickets and was told it was still to early. Last yera we made the mistake of waiting till the end of feburary to book tickets for Christmas and had a hard time getting them. Hopefully that won't happen this year.

Lissa

I convinced my brother to book this cruise with us. It took a lot of persuading and many emails with all the great things they will be missing if they don't go with us. Joining us will be my brother, his wife, and their ds who will be 5 at sailing time. I am going to tell my sister-in-law to come join this board.

Speaking of other things, it is so cold here. These are the kind of days when I wonder why we moved away from Florida. My girls had no school today so we spent a cozy day inside.

I hope everyone has a great week.

Minnie1 - how fun to have family joining you on the cruise -- definitely get your SIL to join the Meet thread as we all work on our plans for the next several months!

Today is our last official holiday where we're off work until Memorial Day the end of May. Thank goodness I have some travel plans between now and then or I'd be turning into Grumpy.

I'm so glad I found this board. My husband and our 2 sons (ages 16 and 13 at time of sail) will be taking our first cruise on the Disney Magic Christmas 2008. My 16 year old is worried that he won't find anything to do. We are so excited. I've already learned alot by reading posts here. Thanks!!:yay:

:welcome: Love-Eeyore! We're glad you found us!

I'm Cindy D., wife to Gary, mom to Nathan (12) and Zachary (11) (ages at time of sailing). This will be our 4th Disney cruise, 3rd on the Magic, first for Christmas, although we sailed the week before Christmas in 2005. The decorations and details are so fun!

Love-Eeyore,
Welcome to the Magical Christmas Board. I just found the board a couple of weeks ago and I love being able to talk to other people counting down to the same fun experience as us.

Sailing with me, Angie, is my dh Pete, and my two dd (age 10 & 7 at sailing). I also just got my brother, SIL, and their ds (age 5) to join us as well.

I am so looking forward to being on the ship at Christmas with all the decorations.

Angie

Thanks for the welcome Cindy and Angie. I am Joyce, it will be dh, Jim, ds, Jesse and Tyler. I am so excited. It will be nice to get away from the cold!!

Hi Love Eeyore! My girls are 11 and 13 and we are cruising in 11 days :goodvibes (can you tell I'm still excited even though this is cruise #4). They love DCL, want this as their only vacation if they get only one vacation and do not want any other cruise ship. We are all excited for the Christmas cruise also but it seems too far away right now.

My DD13 told me last Feb before that cruise that the spring break 06 cruise was the best time EVER and she was afraid that the Feb cruise would not measure up. She was very excited but scared that it might not be as good of a time. She came back saying that the Feb cruise was the best time ever!! I've now gotten the same story and had reminded her about last year. She is very excited because one of the friends she met last year is coming aboard this year. Your boys will have a great time if they are somewhat social and willing to meet new friends. Even as teens they have a wonderful time on the cruise.

:welcome: Joyce & family

I'ma the other Cindy, married to the other Gary. We'll be sailing with our DS8 & DS14. This will be our first cruise on the Magic. We've sailed twice on the Wonder and once with another line.

:santa:
