Magic - What's "new"?

I miss the "old" atrium. And Parrot Cay.

I thought the chandelier was a real asset and wish they hadn't removed it! It was so unique. And Parrot Cay was my favorite menu, but once they removed the original decor for the Med sailings in 2007, it never felt the same.

Having never been on the Magic is there someplace to see contrast pics of this chandelier everyone's talking about?

Here's the old one:

I'll have to go find the new one. Give me a couple of minutes......

I'm back. I don't have a full atrium shot of the new one, but this is it:

image.jpeg Here is a picture of the christmas tree. Not sure where it went before, but not having the second staircase worked out in this case. This also gives you a feel for the atrium layout.

If anyone is interested in other pics, I have pretty much all the new stuff, so let me know and I will post. I will try to do pics minus guests if possible.

A side note, are others having an issue with the site where at times it constantly refreshes the page as you are replying?

The new one does seem rather demure by comparison.

It is. One thing that's funny, though, and I didn't realize until we went on the "Art of the Theme Show" tour on the Wonder is that the old Chihuly isn't actually glass. It's plastic! So...it was sort of fake. :P

Well, they had to make it out of plexiglass, because of the ship's motion/vibration. A glass chandelier like that would have smashed itself to pieces. Often you could see the flowers/petals vibrating when the ship was moving. And, as it got older, the span of the motion was causing the to run into each other.

Oh, for sure, I totally get it. That's what they said on the tour. I hadn't really thought about it before. But it still seems sort of cheesy to have a chandelier made by a famous glass blower that's made of plastic! There's some irony there.

I understand that it was originally made in glass and the copies were made in plastic. At least that is what the CM on my Theme of the Art tour said...

And I belong to the minority of actually preferring the new chandelier. I find it goes far better with the theme of the ship than the Chihuly one. And I really never cared for the one on the Magic anyway, the one on the Wonder I really liked, but still thought that it did not fit.

Now, see, I liked the one on the Magic more than the one on the Wonder. Just liked the colors better.

The chandelier added so much color! And it is still weird to see the atrium without that other stairway.

They had to remove the chandelier though as it was past its "safety" gate. As its so high and moving on the ship all the time they have a very limited life span. I do however think that they should have gone for something similar (or a replacement). I agree the new one adds more light but you don't tend to notice it where as the old one was just so distracting it was amazing! Every time I walked through the atrium I'd take a photo of it from a different angle as I'd spot something else. Now its all rather flat and boring really.

. Say it isn't so! I love the chandelier on the Wonder but this makes it a bit less magical somehow.

Its a form of plastic yes (I want to say pyroplex??). Glass would be too dangerous on a ship with the movement etc and would have an even shorter safety life than the plastic. Its still impressive even in plastic but I agree I was a bit disappointed when I found out. It makes complete sense why it isn't glass but doesn't stop it feel a bit of a let down.
