Magic Mountain - Questions

Hi All,
We will be making a trip to Disneyland the week of June 21 - 28 - I plan to take my oldest daughter (13) to Six Flags Magic Mountain for one day while we are there.

We will be staying on Harbor Blvd so I know the drive is going to be brutal.

Questions:
1. Route suggestions? Or just take I-5 all the way up? or just put it in Google Maps and follow it's directions? Or we have a Garmin GPS with traffic, should I follow it....
2. We plan to go during the week - Any day better than others? Crowds? Traffic?
3. We have Six Flags season passes for our home park (Texas) so our admissions is "free". I'm considering getting a Flash Pass, especially since we are only going to be there one day, our admission is covered and during all our trips to our home park I tell my kids we won't get it because we can come anytime. So - Is it worth it? Are the crowds going to be big enough during the week to justify it? I'm leaning towards the Platinum one so frankly we can just ride whatever we want when we want without having to plan to much....plus if we get there late due to traffic it's one less stress. Thoughts?
4. For the flash passes, are there restrictions? For example can you ride each ride only once? or is it unlimited? i know the platium pass lets you ride twice without getting out of the seat.
5. What else should I know about Magic Mountain?

It honestly won't really matter too much what day you go. It's Summer break, so it's going to be steady/busy every day of the week. I would use your Garmin for the directions because it will try to avoid as much traffic as possible.

That's the only way from anaheim to MM. You should follow Garmin GPS with traffic.

Early in the week is a lighter than later in the week. Monday or Tuesday. Traffic is heavy out of Anaheim most of the day. Slightly better between 9Am and 10AM

Since you are leaning towards the Platinum one and have very good reasons my thoughts are that's the one you should go with. It's worth it.

When we travel home from DL we take the 57 to the 210 to the I5. It dumps you out just south of Magic Mt and you avoid downtown LA. It looks longer mileage wise but really it's a faster drive time usually due to traffic.

If you travel during rush hours on a weekday you're going to hit traffic anywhere, though.

I'd probably go for the flash pass for maximum rides. Every time I've been in the summer it's packed with coasters having a 1-2 hour wait.

With over 17 roller coasters in the park you'll want to get the fast passes if you want to ride them all, especially during the summer when people are out of school. Otherwise you'll be in lines all day and even then you may not be able to ride everything.

That's not true. If you get to the park before opening and have plan on what rides to ride first, you wont be waiting very long for anything.

Yes there are restrictions on Flash Pass. The biggest is on X2 and Full Throttle, you can only reserve that ride if you have a Gold Flash Pass or better and its $15 extra per person, per ride on top of the cost for Flash Pass.





Every other ride in the park that offers Flash Pass is included with all Flash Pass tiers and you can reserve the same ride as many times as you want during the day.







If you get to the park before opening and ride the following ride in order below, you wont need Flashpass.

Although it was two years ago, June 2013 we went to MM on a DLR trip because we are all coaster fans. We have a local Six Flags but were not season pass holders and we purchased the Gold Flash Pass. However I didn't want to pay the additional $15 per person for some of the rides (Full Throttle was not open yet, just missed it ) since there were 4 of us. So we got to the park about 30 minutes before it opened and were among the first in the park. Rode the rides that cost extra on top of the Flash Pass first then went and purchased the Flash Pass. It worked out very well for us. Agree that in the first 2-3 hours the park was manageable and the Flash Pass was useful but definitely more needed as the day went on and we were glad we had it. Order of the rides seems to be important as well. There were several people on the boards here that helped me with that and I followed their guidance. We had a blast at MM and got everything done we wanted and even left the park by about 5 pm I think.

I live in the same town as Magic Mountain. Unfortunately, I can't offer any advice on the Flash Passes. I refuse to pay extra for them, and I haven't been to the park in about 3 years now. It's a blast, but I've fallen out of the habit.

Do not take the 5 straight north to get here. Never under any circumstances. You will get stuck in traffic and it will take you twice as long as it should. I see you have one alternative route already suggested. I've never taken that one, but the route I would suggest is the 91 West to the 710 North to the 10 West (you are just barely on the 10) to the 5 North. Gets you around the worst of the traffic. That's how I travel from home to Disneyland every time I go down now.

Of course, a work day is going to have bad commute traffic any way you go about the drive. But the 5 in downtown LA is brutal. Don't do it.

All - one more question about the Platinum Flash Pass - do I need to reoder? or can I purchase when I get to the park, while I'm going to try and get there when it opens there is a good chance we won't. So do they sale out within the first couple of hours on a Tuesday or Wednesday? I'm guessing not, but if there is any chance I can purchase early, but don't wait to be tied into a certain day if our plans change.

We're going to Magic Mountain on 2nd October. Their website says that one flash pass can be used for up to six people but I assume you have to pay for each person. Or can the flash pass be used for several people? We have 10 in our family and the Platinim pass is $125 per person plus admission ($300 per person in New Zealand currency - ouch!!). Any advice would be appreciated.

Correct, you have to pay for each person but if you plan to stay together than 6 people can use the same device, just makes it easier to keep everyone together. Yes, very expensive, but when we went over the summer it made it much easier to ride the rides we wanted when we wanted. You will find and probably be surprised how inefficient the rides are operated, very slow to load and don't run at full capacity. Especially compared to Disneyland.

At Magic Mountain now. I must say that Twisted Colossus has been the highlight of my California trip. Better than anything at Disneyland, California Adventure, or Universal.

The old wooden Colossus was really getting tired and lame, and I'm glad they revitalized it. Pretty awesome coaster now, especially since you get to experience BOTH sides in a single ride!!! Great job Six Flags!!

I hear they're getting new trains on Revolution next year and hopefully that will make it rideable again.

X2 is still awesome. Haven't tried Full Throttle yet.

I love Magic Mountain! We went a month ago for Fright Fest and Twisted Colossus is so good! Full Throttle, X2, Tatsu, Superman, Lex Luthor Drop of Doom, Apocalypse, etc. If you like thrill rides it's the park to go to! If you like Halloween & haunted houses it's worth a visit in October!
